    Long distance to arena, driving is the only viable option, incredibly long traffic to leave plus the cost of parking is almost as much as the cheapest tickets...

      whostolemyTV but then why is everyone upset about moving the team?

      because it would be an even longer drive if the team was in i don't know lets say Quebec city? no one would be upset if the team moved from kanata to lebreton they are upset about relocating which is what melnyk was referring to

      whostolemyTV The Blues are in another state and about 45 mins drive away. I have season tickets and pay $20 for parking each game.
      Fans will go, or they won't. Don't complain because you have to drive to see a game. Why would they move the stadium a few miles when they can't fill it now?
      Maybe fill the stadium and then say "look, you have the fans. We just need it closer to consistently come to games"

    I find it mind boggling that these two get air play. Here are the issues:
    - He bought the team when it was valued between $130-$150 million. It is now valued at $570 million despite consistently
    being close to the bottom of the league in cap spending
    - Ottawa has had several fan favourites leave town over the years because of his perceived greed
    - The rink location is absurd, and the parking even worse. Melnyk knew this when he bought the team
    - Considering he would literally be dead if not for a Senators fan giving him a new liver, it's especially heinous to question
    whether there are enough fans in Canada's capital to support an NHL team
    - There was something especially vile about the timing of his threatening words to fans Friday, one day before his
    Ottawa Senators would host the city's first outdoor game as part of the NHL's ongoing 100th anniversary celebration. He
    chose that moment to blackmail the people of Ottawa with the threat of relocation
    - You have to be a special breed of billionaire to gripe about money after chastising your franchise's best player for
    expressing his desire to fair compensation on his next contract as he did when Karlsson spoke out a few weeks ago
    - He should have agreed to pay Daniel Alfredsson in his last season. Instead the fans watched as their beloved hero signed with
    Detroit when he should have stayed where he belonged
    - Melnyk is worth more money than 99.9 percent of the world, yet he complains about being cash poor and unable to pay
    players or scouts. It's the only thing fans want to hear about less than reporters' airport problems or hotel points system.
    - Two outstanding groups with very deep pockets are waiting in the wings to get their hands on this team. Both groups would
    jump on a chance to finance decontamination of the proposed downtown location, without government funding, thus forever
    eliminating the catastrophic current location of the rink.
    Melnyk is a fly in the ointment at this point. Betteman, of all people, was the "good guy" over the weekend when he had to intervene on behalf of the board of governors, and the city of Ottawa. #melnykout

    I'm a Leafs fan and I'm only in Ottawa for school but it truly is hard to make it to a game here. I get some people don't have the cash for it. Others don't care enough about the team to go. But then there are people like me who would love to go to a few games a season, but the only thing holding me back is the fact that the arena is just too far away from the downtown core.
    NHL games are always a fun thing to see live no matter what team is playing but having the Sens closer to the downtown core will tremendously increase attendance.
    If any team in the league needs a new stadium, its the Sens.

    • @rivahkillah

      Is there really no charter buses that go there?

    • @GhettoTownPhatBoy
      @GhettoTownPhatBoy 6 лет назад +3

      There are buses that take you there but they take about 1 hour to get there. Plus there is nothing around the arena really that offers entertainment. Downtown there are a ton of things to do before and after the game.

    • @rivahkillah
      @rivahkillah 6 лет назад +4

      If it were the Leafs and it took you an hour to go and cost $32 (cheapest seat I found for tomorrow's game), you wouldn't go? This is how Senators fans should be looking at it.
      I'll say that if I could find a similar deal (a short travel time compared to those of us that live outside the downtown core, and dirt cheap) for Leaf games I'd be in attendance for every single home game.

    • @GhettoTownPhatBoy
      @GhettoTownPhatBoy 6 лет назад +2

      rivahkillah As a Leaf fan, of course I would go. But i think the main problem in Ottawa after being here for 2 years is the fact that people don't care enough to make it all the way out there.
      You gotta think of it from the casual fan perspective. If it was downtown you could grab some food and drink at a bar in byward market and then make a short trip to the game. Thats a huge incentive for people who aren't die hard fans. Its these sort of people that the Sens have to bring to their games. The fans that support the team from their home every other game.

      Russell Donald you can't just pick up an arena and move it. It would take at least five years to agree on a spot, payment, and to actually build the thing. A 30 minute drive is no excuse not to go to a conference final.

    • @NotExplicable
      @NotExplicable 6 лет назад

      Weak it takes at least 45mins to drive downtown in bad traffic to reach the ACC. It takes millions and support to build a stadium.

  • @conorbyrne2464
    @conorbyrne2464 6 лет назад +11

    Here's the thing... Attendance numbers are so low solely because it is about a thirty minute drive from downtown Ottawa. Were we to have an arena DT or at least close, those numbers would go way up. Also, Melnyk has only allowed the GM's to spend money at around the beginning of last year. And *coincidentally* we end up going to the 3rd round. #MelnykOut was trending for a reason. He is not like any other owner. He threw his fans under the bus and threatened to move the team like *that*. He blames the fans for not wanting to drive all the way to Kanata to watch the games.

    • @maxpal27
      @maxpal27 6 лет назад +2

      ''He blames the fans for not wanting to drive all the way to Kanata to watch the games'' Put it anyway you want, if you guys don't buy tickets, you will lose your team. unfortunate, but how could that NOT be the case? East final and the fans are not willing to drive 30min to watch the game? think about it......

    • @mrbiggs36
      @mrbiggs36 6 лет назад +1

      @tannermurray420 6 лет назад +1

      Conor Byrne I'm a caps fan and people drive more than an hour and a half through DC traffic to watch Caps games. And because the arena is in DC, parking is either expensive or far, but probably both. It's a shame you can't sell out a playoff game, let alone an eastern conference final.

  • @mrbiggs36
    @mrbiggs36 6 лет назад +12

    All I see our sens fans talking about a 30-45 min drive. Give me a break. Many fan bases drive/commute long distances to watch games. Blaming an owner who spends the 11th highest in payroll yet receives 25th attendance is a poor argument. There's no reason a dedicated fan base wouldn't attend an eastern conference final game. Key word "dedicated". Not sure if there's enough of those fans in ottawa

    • @VictorianLifeForm
      @VictorianLifeForm 6 лет назад +1

      Its not a 30 to 45 minute drive. Its an hour or an hour and a half from where people live in Ottawa. When there is traffic (ie when a game is being played) it can easily be 2 hours in both directions, and its worse if you bus. Its honestly easier to bus to Montreal and watch a game there

    the problem right now is that no one owns the 300 section of the CTC. Back in the days of the Corel Centre, Nortel owned the 300 section and would give discounted tickets to employees. Now, no one owns that whole section and therefore fewer ticket sales.

    This might be the NFL I'm using as an example, but here goes...
    The New England Patriots(back in the day, they were the Boston Patriots) play in Foxboro, halfway between Providence and Boston on I-95/US-1. Yet, IINM, they're also served by the T's MetroLink trains. Any good sporting house location needs to have access to major roadways and/or public-transit(preferrably train) services.

    As a Sens fan, it wasnt really his comment that pissed me off, it was the timing 100%. The fact he made these comments during a very special time for us fans [Being the 100 Classic and Alumni Game] really pushed buttons. If he had simply said it at a different time, then sure, no real issue [for me at least]. It is the truth that we are a small market not pulling enough in. It's true. It's also true that our city is based off Government jobs, where it's pay system is screwed. I go to games myself, as I don't work for the Government, but I know a lot of Government-employed friends, who can't even get Christmas presents for their family.
    To sum it up, yes, we are a small market not pulling in enough, but there are some circumstances that must be seen that also help cause the issue.

      The truth is the truth sweeping it under the rug doesn't fix things. They have to lobby to have these games outside which costs more money in order to make profit to keep the team in Ottawa. A new arena is a huge investment and risk especially with the low attendance.

  • @garysilkwood3837
    @garysilkwood3837 6 лет назад

    A large number fans drive over half an hour to attend a game. That’s certainly been true in the markets I’ve lived in. In fact I think it takes half an hour plus to get anywhere that isn’t down the street.
    Does Ottawa not have suburbs? There are usually just as many if not more fans in the greater metropolitan areas as the actual city. I assure you they drive and park for games.

    What Ottawa fans wanted in 2017, and still want in 2019 is a new Arena in downtown Ottawa. If Melynk gets the arena built, it will pay off very quickly. Stop waiting/pushing the offers of Melynk and get the job done!

  • @dugarry500
    @dugarry500 5 лет назад +1

    I think if you dive into the history of attendance, that may tell you a very different story. The attendance hasn't always been low. And perhaps also consider the geography of the city. Lastly, the product also has been highly inconsistent, making any momentum to build excitement very difficult. Finally, what about all of the infrastructures that was promised in 1990s'? Only until 2017, was the highway congestion issue addressed. If you want more season ticket holders, you must shorten the commute. You are asking too much for someone to attend games 41 times a year, to take that commute. its s perspective, but is also not realistic to ask anyone to do so more than a few years.

  • @tifpo33
    @tifpo33 6 лет назад

    The drive and parking to go to an Ottawa game is more than the cost of admission and extras for the majority of teams in the US. 2018 Third round playoff tickets to a Nashville game cost less than a third of an Ottawa third round ticket. Supply and demand and location. I'm more annoyed that the media is trying so hard to make something more of this news story than what it is.

  • @TheRamblesBand
    @TheRamblesBand 6 лет назад

    This comment may be a bit late to the game, but there’s a lot more within the city itself that play a role in why Sens game attendance is rather low. One thing is this city is a government city, and considering how we’ve been dealing heavily with the Phoenix pay system mishap, people are not really for spending money seeing how they haven’t gotten paid or barely been paid. That’s just one of the multiple aspects I’ve heard about when discussing this topic.

    I understand that the arena is far away but that can only be an excuse for so long, iv been to some leafs and jays games and it takes over an hour to get to the arena for me. The entire way there and back the buses or/or trains are packed with fans who are happy to make the trip to see their team play, and this has been when the jays and leafs were terrible teams as well. I know some people to refuse to believe this is an issue, but LOCATION. The location of the stadium is literally on the outskirts of Ottawa, it's not even IN Ottawa itself technically. From DOWNTOWN Ottawa to Canadian Tire Centre it's about a 30 minute drive. Take into account that a lot of people don't own their own vehicle and have to bus. To Bus from Downtown Ottawa to Canadian Tire Centre is about an hour or more.
    Then there's the fact that there's a good chunk of people further East Ottawa in the Gloucester and Orleans area who would drive about 45 Minutes or more to get to Canadian Tire Centre. To take a Bus from Gloucester or Orleans would take you an eternity to get there.
    The Location is really NOT good. There are LOADS of people who would LOVE to go to the game, but it's a HUGE inconvenience to get to Canadian Tire Centre. If the Owner wants to move, he should move more INSIDE OTTAWA and I GUARANTEE you that attendance would go up GREATLY! Having something closer to Downtown would encourage people to go to games way more. It would be an even distance from all directions and would be an easy bus ride for people who don't drive.
    Location. I'm telling you that's the biggest problem with attendance in Ottawa. Obtain a better location and you'll see those numbers go up.

    what did melnyk do? yea. what did he do? absolutely nothing. he hasnt do anything for the last 5 years and demands the fans pay for his budget team that has apparently "barebone management", his arena which he has barely done anything in the way of improving the every mans experience, hes only improved his own experience. Maybe he should do something. but then again, it only took him 7 years to pave most of the parking spaces, but of course leaves the one used primarily un paved. obviously the solution to bringing in fans is another wine rack, that'll solve all our problems

Bryden wanted out and was going to sell the team cuz he couldnt afford to loose money anymore. Melnyk came in and shelled out his money when no one else wanted to. Move the stadium further in the city OR improve commuting to and from the stadium. As far as I can see, you can only either drive or take ONE bus and that's it; no other public transport option. Not familiar as to why they chose that location for the stadium to be built in (living in the UK), perhaps to enhance the area's development in corporate/housing ways but the lack of reliable, punctual and safe public transport would never bring success to such a project.

    The winter classic shows that there could be a sell out every game in Ottawa. LeBreton flats Arena would definitely attract people, but Melnyk knows that since people in Ottawa have been complaining about the location of the CTC.
    But folks, there is light at the end of the tunnel. If we can't support the team now that there are talks of building a new arena to a more central location, Melnyk just is not going to risk spending millions on that new place. It is a vicious circle. We need to go to the games and remove the fans out of that circle.
    Go Sens Go!

  • @randomonio
    @randomonio 6 лет назад

    There's two things that they gotta do, clean up lebreton flats which will be around $150 million to $200 million, then build the arena which will be another $250 million to $400 million. Add in another $100 million for extra space just in case, you're looking at $500 million to $700 million dollars for total estimated expenses to build a new arena downtown. I'm not even mentioning the cost for building the condos and other buildings surrounding the arena. Eugene can't afford that by himself and the city of Ottawa doesn't have any interest in helping out. Look how much the city of Edmonton put in for the new arena, they paid over $300 million while Daryl Katz and the Oilers paid about $170 million. At the end, the whole thing costed over $600 million and they are charging a surcharge fee on all tickets for all events and the Sens are going to have to do the same.

    Other "important numbers": Between 05-06 and 08-09, the Sens were in the top 7 in attendance and filled over 100% capacity most of those years. 09-10 to 10-11? 98% and 99% capacity. They were in the top 6 the next two years at 101% capacity! The numbers then fell to 95% over the next few years as the on-ice product became less hopeful-that is ALSO cause and effect. "spending 11th cap" YEAH THE LAST 2 years. But before that was BOTTOM TEN. AGAIN it was the Bobby Ryan and Phaneuf contracts that pushed him and they ONLY ACQUIRED DION if they were allowed to move out Cowen Greening and Michaleks contract OTHERWISE theyd never added Dion to their blueline and you can FORGET that deep run with only one good defense pairing. We are talking about the 2018 year where they went from one goal away to returning with a roster missing their #2 dman, 2Lw, and 2 third liners FROM THE PLAYOFF TEAM because Eugene went cheap again in the offseason.

    One reason being that so many fans don't show up to the games are because as of now the Sens are a joke, I am a fan of them and while the game against the Blue Jackets was really damn good, they are pretty much at the 2nd bottom of the roster right now. Loss after loss do you really think the fans will show up? Yeah yeah people will say "To support the team" while that is true even the support to the team doesn't seem to help at all. Was it crazy what he said? No. It's simple business strategy. It's the CONTEXT!!! The sens are in a horrible slump, and Eugene chose a an outdoor game, where there should be nothing but joy and turned it into a guilt tripping the fans for not voyaging out to Kanata and to go see his team. The guy had his life saved by a dedicated fan who gave his kidney for Eugene, and he threatens to take the team away in the middle of our outdoor game? Even though what Eugene said is completely true, he's incredibly stupid for actually saying it.

  • @patjschmidt

    These guys are tone deaf. Yeah, because how many games you win and how far you go in the playoffs is the sole reason people should buy a ticket.
    - ticket prices keep going up
    - owner consistently threatens the public and throws the faults at our feet with no introspection on how the team is run
    - arena is 30 mins out of town
    - parking prices rival seat prices
    - concession prices continue to go up
    - spending close to the cap for the first time in years doesn’t absolve running the team on the cheap for the past few years
    - game ‘experience’ has not changed in 20 years...(no extra marketing, nothing to add value to the experience, compare that with the efforts to present a total experience when going to see a RedBlacks game makes the Sens value proposition low in people’s minds)

      So what? When your market is good people do hours of driving to go to a game
      -parking prices rival seat prices.
      Cause the ticket price is super low. Its like 32$ for a ticket! like come on its super cheap. At montreal the lowest ticket price is like 100$ and this is against non prenium team...
      If this team was in quebec with those prices I can guarantee you that the build would be 100% full every single night.

Its just frustrating that people fail to realize that there is a guy who is trying to run a business and has a lot of money invested in the team. I mean 100s of millions. He is trying to not loose money and make a lil money. He can't seem to get consistent support from the fans(25th in attendance) but 11th in spending. If he was 11th in spending and 11th in attendance I dont think the owner would have any problem with that. But 25th in a league of 31? That kinda shows you that the market might not be as strong as one would hope. Leaving the owner out of it and your personal views of him what can the team do to bring more people to the rink? Dont say the location sucks cuz that was the city's fault for screwing the team in the early 90s. The team wanted to be downtown but the city wouldnt allow it. Dont say turn them into a winning team because you are going to have your ups and downs. Looks at Toronto or the Pens? Dont say ticket prices or concessions prices or parking because they are cheaper or on part with the league average. What do you think the team can realistically do?

      Because the number of fans in the stands (a business consideration) is far more relevant to the owner of the team than the population of the city the team is based in. Quebec City has a higher population than Winnipeg yet Winnipeg was able to replace their "lost" team before Quebec City, because Winnipeg had built a new arena (a business consideration) while Quebec City hadn't (they have since built a new arena which was opened in 2015). I'm not saying he should/shouldn't move the team, but if he does the people in Ottawa better shut up if he does, and don't think your team will be replaced any time soon.
