Max Christensen Sweden did exactly what they were supposed to do at San Siro. They parked the bus, shut down the italians and got the result they needed. They weren't there to play pretty football. Italy had the ball possession and pressure most of the game but rarely created any real scoring chances. If they can't score at home in such an important game, then they deserve to lose.
They knew beforehand how the game would be, with the italians having the pressure since they were the team that needed to score. Also, Italy is overall a better team talent wise, so no need to try and be fancy against such a team. I'm happy as a swede that they qualified, but at the same time it kinda sucks to not have Italy included in the World Cup. But they only have themselves to blame. The Italians have been on a steep downward slope in the game for a very long time and have mostly relied on the skill of their goalkeeper, Gianluigi Buffon. The rest of the time they have mostly relied on playing boring defense and taking games into penalty kicks. They got what they deserved in being eliminated and this is an excellent result for the world of international soccer/football. Like the Germans successfully did, the Italians will need to re-develop their national teams at the grassroots level with a complete ideological change that would include implementing a merit-based system of player selection and also towards playing a more offensive style game to compete against other nations more effectively. However, the cronyism and dysfunctional politics that is rampant within the Italian national footballing system will need to be dismantled first
