Thanks for your channel. Definitely inspirational. Trying local native plants is what I've been doing for the last three years. Learning a lot and failing a lot more but never giving up and watching you keeps me going 🙏. Watching from the Sunshine Coast
Haha, they've been making cheap pots in china for a while now so could still be vintage😉 either way its apt to have the chinese elm in the chinese pot✌
The shiwan pots made long ago are meant to be made like that. Very rustic looking. They are not meant to be perfect but deliberately made rustic. I dont know if that one is antique though. Id say more vintage than antique, But for $350, its not a rip off. I think the tree and pot combo looks fantastic.
I quite like this pot - will really suit the exfoliating bark of the Chinese Elm. Wonderful explanation of your future path with your trees - I'm looking to do similar with my Canadian natives.
you are never boring :-) . As for blackbirds.. yeah Ive got lots of them. I fantasise about the slug gun. Sometimes I throw rocks at them and it makes me feel a little better. Chinese elms, I planted two in my front yard last year and hope i dont regret it. Its so hot and dry around here Im sure they wont be too much trouble... If they annoy me I can turn them into bonsai.
It all came together at the end. Nice work. As for black birds, I too had that problems in the early days. I dealt with it by purchasing a toy plastic snakes and place one on each tree, every day I would change their positioning, some times two or three times a day. Voila problem solved… the birds were soon gone… try it and let me know how you get on. Mine were cheap Chinese imports, each cost £1.
That's a great idea using the mesh over the moss Sam!! I'm sick of the black birds chucking moss all over the shop...... Going to Bunnings to get some now, ha!
Hey Sam, I bought me one of them antique Chinese pots as well……..paid about the same for mine as you did for yours. I was wondering if I’d gotten ripped off also, but, like yourself I liked the pot.
fantastic work. As always, thank you so much for sharing your wisdom with us :) you're a pioneer in a lot of ways. I'll absolutely be trying out your budget aussie bonsai mix this season :) cheers!
Hi Sam, thanks mate. If that was my tree I would make the branch going to the left of screen my leader and then do a carving on the big fat trunk on the left 😀. Thanks for the video 👍
We all make purchases we later question. Don’t listen to that doubt ; unique pot + unique tree = perfect combo👌 enjoy! God bless you, dear man 🙏✝️. ✌️🇷🇺☮️🇺🇦✌️. 🙋♀️🤍🇮🇱✌️
I have never seen a tree in the wild that has a secondary trunk growing off a lower branch, and its a pity as that branch detracts from the beauty of the upper tree, just my opinion
Best tree collection on RUclips
I agree with this, 100% 👆
You’re not wrong! 🤩

Mate your trees in the recent repots are looking good!!
Love the lower branches. Great example of how to take a tree forward.

Beautiful shade trees. Just don't cut them down and they probably won't send out suckers 😃😃

I use cut up lengths of garden hose around veg plot to keep cats off ! 👌
@@gayefanner731 Great ! there are many ways to keep them off.
@@mikbonsai Indeed! My ‘Hose Snakes’ work best placed randomly throughout the plot and moved from time to time ! 🪱🪱🐍 ✌️

Final position was the one I hoped you would do... spot on... Moss is instant “aging” bit like me 😂

The trunk in the right i mean 😬
my ash tree is already starting to bud too, there were 6 weeks left of winter when it started
I would be terrified to be responsible for such a tree.
👍👌🙂 Have you seen the new Australia Native Bonsai Book 🙂.
Yeh it's great 👍
red flowering quince is in full flower as at 15/7/24 - spring is coming -
Haha, I would crap myself cutting that much off the rootball of a tree like that!
I have an old Shiwan pot like this, wondering if anyone knows more about them?
Is the gutter guard you use plastic or metal?
What is it you have growing around the base of this tree ?
Weeds.
