I think your observations about multi-trunk bonsai and the brain are spot on. A multi-trunk tree is a more complex image than a single-trunk tree. It's more difficult to mentally grasp the whole thing as trunk + branches + canopy = tree. So it's a bigger challenge for the designer to create a coherent composition that makes an immediate, convincing impression. But when it works it's very cool!

    Thats a bloody pearla!
I tried to dig one out a couple years back that was around that size,
I swear some chinaman was holding onto the end of the tap root!
    (save paint - even bursts/strokes 👍🏽)
Have a good night man, Cheers!🤠🍻

Aussie Dave here Sam, I have 5 leopard trees all started from seed 3 years ago. Trunks are as thick as my thumb but about 450mm high with great canopy. I'm going to air lay them to reduce the height to 200mm high 😊. I'm in Brisbane, and the weather is just starting to warm up, so I hope I'm successful 😊

Good tidy up, I am guilty of not going far enough at times. I have just finished 3rd video in a series on Sumo Tiger Bark Ficus. The branches are wired up and I reduced the two new branches forming part of the apex. During editing I realised I should have shortened them more. So had to do it later and not recorded on camera. The Question I have for you is: for the thickness of the trunk, should you not have gone lower down for the trunk chop and for the canopy and new branches to develop from back budding ?

Always great to see you Sam ! I’ve only got a Blackwood and an olive purely because your info and knowledge on those species , salt never required 😂, I’ve recently found a place here in TAS that sells natives , just gotta get there one time , thinking of giving a Huon pine a try . Can I give oaks and other deciduous trees a good prune now and maybe a repot. We probably still have 6 weeks of cold weather left

Good start for that tree Sam, hard to visualise in a young tree sometimes especially a Redgum 👍, a little tip keep the coffee cup away from the Willie Wagtail or it may take off like a crow 😂

I absolutely agree that it can be hard to see the tree until it is well on the way to grown. As the kids keep saying: trust the process. I have found that it takes a pleasingly short period of time before it starts to share what it wants to do - and with the rate of growth on a River Red, it might only be a year or so!

Great work Sam! I totally understand what you mean when styling Redgum. I've got 4 in my collection and I was applying the basic bonsai principles to them. It wasn't until about 10 years down the line with a good old trunk chop, defoliation and letting it grow out that the tree started to show its true nature.

and because it is not my tree (and not having to deal with the consquences)perhaps a trunk chop above the first branch -

fantastic -- I have a redgum that needs a height reduction - gotta be decisive as well as brave and be prepared to wait for results

Coming along nice Sam. I think the movement would be more inclined to go with the lower branch because it would be likely on the sunny side of the tree which would grow stronger( not by much) I think gums tend to grow away from the slant of the main trunk also✌ good reason to go bush for a look and test the theory👍

I have a couple of river redgums, Mine are out of control 🙄, no plan and no direction. I just hack them back each year keeping one new branch from each location, and think "next year I will decide what to do with them." They grow like crazy, so I always have new branches to choose from. If I was home I would go outside and look at them to see if I could make a plan, but im in Mildura for a few days, doctors not pleasure.. it will be a pleasure to get home, Its too busy up here. 😀 Thanks for the video.

G,day there Bonsai bloke , I’m always interested in your bonsai theory, your passion your bobby interest , i to love creating bonsai like many others out there , Australian natives I haven’t got as bonsai yet but maybe in the future for bonsai design , I picked up some wood chips a few years ago and spread them in my garden , I got 2 trees grow out of my garden one type of gum I don,t know but I’m thinking river gum , and another one I’m not sure about as well , they are 5 feet tall in pots but I’m going to set them free soon in the ground to grow into big trees , I just can’t cut them lol I feel sentimental about them .

I'm a complete novice but I've heard you mention before about straight trunks not being ideal. To be honest I thought you might have just chopped it just after the lowest branch where the straight part starts, or is it ok as its a Red Gum? Or do you think the cuts you made will make it back bud lower camouflaging the straighter part of the trunk?

    • @fishmut

Back budding not all trees do , so with trees not sure about best to check that out before chopping , with gums I’m not sure about back budding , some big trees damages by storms etc can take a very long time before you might see new growth of another bit of life on that tree , ie a new branch starting to grow , I,m no expert but just from looking at them those trees live very long lives , just sayin . Even a tree you think is dead can many years later produce a branch of new growth from out of no where .
