Did this with one of mine this year! Due to the cool, wet Spring it stood naked for eight weeks making me think I had killed it then suddenly masses of buds and is now leafing out nicely!

Omg I hadn’t realised you could go back so hard on these I can’t wait to see how this one progresses I’m amazed how quick you asses the tree and go through the work 😜

I could not agree more! I live in the Netherlands so we share about the same climate conditions (perhaps a little bit less wet) and I proceed this way with Azalea's (also Satzuki Azalea's) for many years now. However, I always wait until all or at least most of the flowers have withered, but that shouldn't be a problem. After that, the trees develop their strongest growing period. So, I also cut them back hard and that goes for the rootball too when repotting is necessary. It was never a problem and the Azalea's always responded very well. By the way: I stop fertilizing when the flower buds appear and about a few weeks after repotting, I resume fertilizing. Since the risk of drying out is quite high these days, using only Kanuma, I mix it with normal potting soil, meant especially for Azalea's and so on. That way, the risk of drying out is much less (and the soil mixture is much cheaper that way...). For many years, my Azalea's are always responding very well but, as you know very well, drying out means a certain death for these plants.
In about August I even cut back the new growth (always about half of the new shoots). Azalea's are also quite easy to propagate - I use heel cuttings. The only "problem" is: they simply do not grow so fast and it takes quite some patience to get a firm tree. My personal solution for that is: simply try to make small bonsaï from them (shohin) or even very small (mame)! Works quite well... Those small, flowering bonsaï, placed in the shade of bigger trees, can cheer up your bonsaï shelves quite a bit...! By the way: a rooted cutting may already flower when it's only one year old, if your lucky!
Anyway, that is quite a massive and impressive tree you have there. Any idea how old it may be? I'm sure quite a few decades...

it is great to see how drastically pruning can be done, books just never quite seem to get the message over. I will now feel less daunted by the prospect, Thanks.

Thanks Corin a great video on Azalea pruning I think most amateur bonsai keepers would be scared to take the trees back so hard, but it the right thing to do, I don’t have any Azaleas to worry about. Have a great trip to the States, then we can see how the tree has responded to the work.

I've a few Azaleas that have some thickened leaves, I think it's a fungal problem, Is there anything I can treat them with or are they only fit for the burning bin?🤔

My dog squashed a dwarf azelea I have had for 13+ years in my garden. It really was in a mess. So I pulled it up. Cut it back.. then cut it more. 😂 it has a thick trunk, no leaves into the right media for it. And it started to grow. Its now at a stage I need to start reducing branches. And it may just flower next year.
I would like to keep it as a shohin size. 🌸
Do you feed your tree over winter? And greenhouse it over winter?
    Thanks again.

I live in the US in ny and had a hinomaru from japan. Died 3 yrs later. I feel like it could not take the cold weather whatsoever and protected it in a shed every year. Im afraid to buy another especially since the cheapest one that even looks halfway decent is up and around 1k. Im sure those are way more but wish i had the money to get another. Ur trees are amazing.! Toughest loss i ever went through in bonsai so far.

I cant get these kind of Azalea's to grow where I live. I guess it gets too cold. The other larger kinds don't have an issue. Just the small Satzkis. I probably spelled that wrong.

Can you propagate from any of the cuttings or is the timing wrong? Im curious as I haven't worked with Satsuki before. Would the longer shoots better success rate, or less successful?

Hi Colin, Paul from bury st Edmund’s bonsai club. I have two small azaleas, which flowered this year, but i want to develope them into larger specimens. Is it just a case of plonking them in the ground or would Parker pots be sufficient?
    Hopefully see you soon.
