This song was on the setlist for the first couple of live shows Nemophila did, back in 2019 when they called themselves Mayu Session. I saw the second of those shows. Drummer Tamu has covered "Kurenai" for some years either solo or with guitarist Daisuke Kurosawa. It's almost a rite of passage for Japanese bands to cover "Kurenai". Babymetal's song "Akatsuki" is an homage to "Kurenai".

I haven't seen this video yet, but when he said: "It's Nemophila. It's definitely gonna be fast." I chuckled a bit thinking of the beginning of the song. I'm looking forward to his reaction.😉

Lots of covers of this J-metal classic, but this is my favorite. The whole band kills it, but OH EM GEE is Tamu superhuman on this one.

I guess I’m the first and not the expert on X-Japan. However, to my limited knowledge they were the most internationally successful (financially) rock band out of Japan. They formed in 1982 and lasted a few decades. Unfortunately, some of the members have now started to pass (RIP). I believe they still hold the record for number for times performing at the Tokyo Dome (55,000 capacity and 15+ performances) including a stretch of 5 Japan’s New Years Eve performances in a row. You might know the drummer Yoshiki-San from his work with Queen, U2, Black-eyed Peas and countless others. A favorite band of Babymetal’s producer Koba-Metal and countless Japanese bands. Again I’m not an expert.
Nemophila slayed this performance. Kudo’s to the women for this performance.

The Tokyo Dome record is particularly impressive considering they broke up for 10 years during the height of their popularity

When Babymetal became the first Japanese band to play Wembley Arena in the UK, they actually took the place from X-Japan because one of the members was ill. I seem to recall Yoshiki paid them a visit.

Just a heads up. Show Ya and X-Japan vids can get blocked but they are great bands. I see in comments there is a link to X-Japans last live. The last live is X-Japans final concert with that line up and it’s a case of looking up the history of that before you watch it. You will get the feeling of it if you do that. Nemophila killed this cover. It’s one of my favourites. They also did Show Ya covers when their drummer Tamu was having a baby and Show Ya’s drummer stood in for her.

X-Japan is like the Metallica of the Japanese metal scene, at least impact wise. They are the elder statesmen of metal. They have strong influence on Babymetal. The version of this from Last Live 1997 by X is incredible. RIP hide

Just for reference. Mayu is the singer
Hazuki is the guitarist usually to Mayu's left with the Ibanez. Saki is the other guitarist. Haraguchi is the bassist and Tamu is the drummer. And they are also all phenomenal often underrated musicians. In fact there's a , I don't know how to describe it, but festival and production where they name the whatever instrument "goddess" and Saki and Tamu have been both been finalists and named "drum goddess" and "guitar goddess" a few times.
You really should delve deeper into nemophila . They have only been together less than 4 full years, yet play like they've been together 10 or more.
Their versatility is highlighted by their you tube play list. They have tons of videos of them basically screwing off in their practice studio doing covers . From a few XJapan covers and other Japanese artists including show ya. (Fairy is a good song of theirs to check out, both show yas and hemophilia version. They also cover everything from maiden, to AC/DC to skid row, to Crue, Bon Jovi , Nickelback all the way to Journey. Their originals can be just as wide ranging a sound. I'm not sure which ones you have done but I would suggest , Now I here, Zen, style and hypnosis to go be you a taste of the range of their music. They are a lot like Babymetal in that way, you can't hear a few songs and pin them down.
As far as XJapan, they have been around since the early 80's and Kurenai (means deep red) came out in the late 80's which explains the sound and feel. But they are still active today and actually did a show a handful of years back where they played as Babymetals band for a show or two instead of the Kami band if I remember right.

Much to say, many people are doing that already :)
So just as a cool contrast, Sokoninaru covered Kurenai as well, and it's actually one of the covers that are really great, in that it's not all a faithful re-creation but they do sokoninaru-fy it. That said Nemophila did do a great job, it's not easy to cover such a legendary band and song well. X-Japan was really quite influential, not just musically but also culturally.
