"For as long as space remains, For as long as sentinent beings remain, Until then may I too remain To dispel the miseries of the world." Prayer of Shantideva, favorite prayer of HH the Dalai Lama
His Holiness is absolutely right. Whether you care at all about a spiritual path or not, the practice of daily meditation is vital for our mental and emotional well-being. Just as the body needs exercise, our mind needs meditation. And actually out bodies benefit from it as well, as an increasing number of medical studies are showing.
@fntime don't worry about your thoughts. the trick to not be affected by them. all thoughts are just thoughts. they come and go, and you don't have to label them or suppress them. i think it was trungpa rinpoche who said, "in meditation you can experience a sense of existence, or being, that includes your thoughts but is not conditioned by your thoughts or limited by your thinking process"
@fntime I think sometimes the best thing about meditation is learning to disassociate yourself from your problems. I didn't think it was possible until I learned. At the start of each meditation try putting every stress, every problem, every little worry or concern into a box in your mind and then close it. For that time, while you are meditating you are completely free from all those things. It releases you and teaches you how much our problems are in our own minds and of our choosing.
Love you All ।। Greatest time and had the lots of Fun also ।। Enjoyed the every moment but some time , you fir bhi hain इंसान है क्या करे ।। But I missed mamy Times Donna also ,, Love you most Donna Really.great Fun and great adventure ......
@Skandronicus Thank you! My point, I'm trying to stop the chatter of my mind. As a meditating point, I look into the abyss! No thought! When meditation becomes entwined into your thoughts, your ego can deceive you! Thanks again!!!!
There are many aspect and levels of meditation but the most basic and most fundamental one is to focus on the most important task of our live which is simply breathing. This natural technique of breathing requires no faith or religion :) Because breathing is the source and a process that is needed for the continuation of our lives we focus on this involuntary task. Through breath we take involuntary task and make it voluntary, what happens during the simple task is different for each person
you can read and listen to as much as u want to but the only real way is to try it the breath is mostly used because it is something that is always with you
Hmm, I read a book of his in which he states meditation is needed to reach a high state of conciousness (enlightment even) to influence Karma and the transitionperiod that takes place when dying, to have a next life being human. If you dont, you'll end up as some "lower" animal, he said. So meditation IS important for the next life.
@fntime no, it just serves as a distraction from whatever is bothering you, when you are focused on something neutral as breathing, you cant focus on what was bothering you...it does still come up, but the more you put it aside gently and focus on the breathing again, it will come up less and less untill you are free of it. Basically, you feel negative emotion because you are "observing" what you dont like. meditations causes you to "observe" something else.
I have a sincere question to the Dalai Lama. How can we fell compassion with hte world, without crying all the time. It is terrible what people all over the world are going trough, and when children is somehow involved I somehow can not be brave anymore, and just feel hopelessness....
It's interesting to me how distinctly different the Buddhist idea of meditation is from the Jewish/Christian idea of meditation. What the Dalai Lama has described here is a method by which a person sort of escapes to pursue inner peace. In the Jewish/Christian tradition, it's a concept of deep consideration to pursue discernment (what one ought to do). I guess both are really seeking clarity, so they're not totally dissimilar, but it just struck me in a way it hadn't before, I guess~shrug~ :)
I think that your comments bring upon you a responsibility to demonstrate a relationship between enlightenment and eyesight, and to refute the existing science on man's impact on the earth's climate.
Where do you live? I'm in georgia right outside the perimeter and we are pretty open to it. But I can see alabama, south carolina, northern or souther georgia, north florida, ten. north carolina all having problems with it haha.
@Tao33316 thank you aswell for your response :-) I know that there is a long way before I can feel thankful for suffering - because I cannot accept it - it makes me angry and frustrated and challenge my faith in God - this is the logic of my heart. But my inner logic know that you somehow are right. I guess I must first practice acceptence before I can begin to practice thankfulness...I have a long road before me :-)
ACORDING THE DALAI LAMA WE HAVE TO LEARN TO CONTROL OUR EMOTIONS. BUT THIS IS NOT A EASY TASK. IT CAN BE NOT SO DIFFICULT IF WE JUST RIMEMBER THAT : "WE ARE NOT OUR EMOTIONS" AND TAKE CARE ALL THE TIME ABOUT WHAT WE THINK, WHAT WE SAY AND WHAT WE DO.
Thats where the discipline comes in. Sure, its harder at first. It's easier if you're suffering from stress, depression, anxiety, etc. However it does get easier with time. It truly is life changing when you incorporate it in your daily life.
@Aviajamin The quote that the channel host left you is one of my favorite quotes. You feel hopelessness because of your perception. From an eternal perspective, everything is Teacher. Out of suffering comes wisdom. The wise are thankful for everything and see value in everything. Look within yourself, and you will begin to see life from this perspective.
@dexterhawson So, essentially, is it then a method to escape the world around you in order to calm the mind in order to better *apply* the mind to the world around you.?. I'm sorry that's very circular syntax, but is that an accurate description?
@moo2thetube Meditation of the breath is beneficial for day-to-day well being. But meditation on the Inner Light and Inner Sound connect you to your Buddha Nature, a divine source of wisdom, love and compassion.
I like to meditate when waiting on a long line, or in a waiting room. Instead of getting upset, I actually feel better than when I walked in. I might even enjoy " waiting" longer.
@YoungMaqler Its a little bit difficult to explain you that in a easier way. Hes asking God for three things. 1st, he asks for serenity to accept what he can not change. Example: what Aviajamin said. 2nd, he asks for courage to change what he can. And third, he asks for wisdom(knowledge)so that he know the difference between the 1st and the 2nd request. Aviajamin, needs serenity to accept things that he can't change, because he can't change the the wickedness of the world. Did you understand?
Yes, and I don't blame religious people for being that way. Fear is a powerful thing and when someone sincerely believes that they will be tortured forever if they make the wrong move, they're going to do everything they can to avoid that fate. It just makes me sad that so many people embrace God not because they genuinely love Him, but because they're afraid of what He'll do to them otherwise. Oftentimes, fear of Hell is the only thing that motivates people to become Christians.
Please make small small vedio of Dalai Lama s ..... only short vedio.. I need Baba guriender s ... And you ... Sri ka to bahut hi jayada sun Liya .. Now your Turn ...male good and real one

Try translating it into terms they can understand, that fit their "world view" -- such as "contemplative prayer". ;) You're just not "praying" to a particular deity, you're doing something deeper. With "prayer" the closer you get to that line, the blurrier it gets. :)
@yobhsiFehT If you research well enough you find that the Jewish/Christian form of meditation actually is just like the Buddhist form. Over time the Jewish/Christian form was almost all but forgotten. When I read up on ancient Christianity and saw what it really was I was shocked. A good book to read about this is called "The Cloud of Unknowing" if you want to know a little more about this.
@Aviajamin Don't carry the weight of the world on your shoulders. Focus on what good you can do at any particular moment. One act of compassion and kindness to a random stranger you pass in the street can be as simple as a greeting. Say hello to people and you instantly make them feel good even if they don't say anything back. We can change things for the better but no one can look at the entire world and take on all its negative energy. Live a happy life and you contribute positively to others.

I don't really understand it. Two explanations that come to my mind are that either: 1) Dalailama knows better, but he provides simplified and incomplete statements like these for general public, because he feels like going to deep or saying something openly might have more negative effects than positive ones, for example dissuading simple or superficial people (who are in majority) from Buddhism altogether... Knowing that whoever has deep interest will seek out the true teachings. or 2) Dalailama is just a political figure, with superficial and distorted view of Buddhism and without any high (or maybe even medium) "spiritual" attainment, as maybe some would claim - especially people who also claim that he is playing nice guy before the world while in fact he has no attainment and is only concerned with keeping grasp on his political position (shugden?). He presents meditation like a relaxation tool or even worse, the way he presents it is like "if you wait for long enough, emotion will weaken, in the meantime focus on breathing so that you won't act on that emotion before it naturally weakens" and that's it. I don't really know whether I have absolutely wrong idea about Buddhism (and especially Tibetan Buddhism, which seems highly esoteric, occult, and generally "supernatural" and "fantastic" as well, containing stories about superhuman powers even - Milarepa being maybe the most famous example).
I would be careful with having utter faith in the authority of anything or anyone. Kalama Sutta would probably also advise against having complete, implicit faith in a figure such as Dalailama.

For me, the wisest human in the world.
Me too!
Dalai Lama is right about this. Emotions cause so many human problems. Breathing right will definitely help.

Breathing Meditation. yes, very easy & powerful. Thanks to all who got it here!!
and this is why you know meditation so well.

The Dalai Lama is simplifying meditation to its most basic level so that it makes sense to us.
I LOVE this Man!!
A very helpful man, do listen to him.

True, we should learn and practice that more. The Eastern Christianity developed also methods called the hesychastic tradition of prayer.
i do something similar except i use chanting. it can often just cut through the worry of that moment.

Wow you sound wiser than Dalai.
@me25422 as I have understanded it, the original buddhism is just a philosofy, a way of life - then, with time, it has been mixed with hinduism, and that is how the reincarnation thought has come into the filosofy, and made it a religion? He is not the reincarnation of Buddha.. Buddha attained Nirvana, which means he cannot be born again...
Some chistians monks practice meditation you can find them her in RUclips. The Dalai Lama is very holy person he has been in contact with crhistians to.
Exactly.....
Meditation can easily be replaced by listening to water sounds or a quick nap.
That's also meditation. Meditation is to fully pay attention to something, it can be mind, sounds of nature, your own breathing and so on.
listening water sound is part of mediation cuz ur concentrate on water sonud
Not really
@Buddha7575 Thank you very much for your comment :-) Yes, I must practise acceptence, that is true....and still keep a contructive approach to the things I can change...

@fntime Hello friend. I know your comment was 4 months ago but in answer to your question...in meditation one does not try to "stop thought" or thinking. Just OBSERVE the breath. Always bring your attention back to the breath. Thoughts are fleeting...forever rising and and fading giving rise to new ones endlessly. This is our prison. Just OBSERVE the breath. :)
@yobhsiFehT How is concentrating on your breath a form of escaping?
@Kohmpressor I would then know, that they were voilitional, as opposed
to most thoughts that are phenomenial!
You will see when you stop thought, that thoughts are like an unattended

meaningless.
@Buddha7575 simply amazing
so, meditate is self-control and emotion master?
@variantevondir Ha ha, nice to know that I am not alone :-) Well, I guess doing our best, is better than not trying at all. Hugs from Denmark
@Aviajamin yeah i c it is a similar way. Even the buddha said we should question everyhting even him. Thabks for the reply.
@Aviajamin To feel compassion is noble, but, one must balance one's compassion with wisdom. Compassion without wisdom (and vice versa) is like a bird with only one wing, it can't fly. 1) Dalailama knows better, but he provides simplified and incomplete statements like these for general public, because he feels like going to deep or saying something openly might have more negative effects than positive
ones, for example dissuading simple or superficial people (who are in majority) from Buddhism altogether... Knowing that whoever has deep interest will seek out the true teachings.
or
