Fantastic version! Bowie has performed this song almost on every tour: 1976, 1978, 1983, 1990, 1997, 1999 and 2002 and it is interesting to compare the different versions. Every of his bands added a different "colour" to it, and it always sounded great!
How cool is that...David having a smoke just in the distance, admiring Adrian just do his intro lead work...Just pure music class and entertainment ...
Bought the vinyl when it was released in 1976' I was 15, and played it endlessly. I get the same kick listening to it now as I did then. It's a stunning album from start to finish
If I could only go back in time and be in the audience for this. OMG. I am in such awe. Still in mourning for the loss of such a talent as David Jones. RIP. I have loved you for years David.
Sherril Stewart I was there!! BUT was way up in the gods and David was an inch high, so this is a much better view, don't feel bad! (I'd like to have seen him around 1976 ☺️).
You just don't see musicians and shows like this anymore. The highest quality musicians, incredible musicianship and integrity. Maybe they're out there, maybe I'm out of touch. Nothing these days seems to be nearly as ambitious and interesting. Guitar work takes a background these days as well. Look at Adrian, a master of his instrument.
I remember going to the Sound + Vision tour at Foxboro, MA. I was familiar with most of the songs Bowie had in his set but "Stay" wasn't one of them as I really wasn't into Station To Station at the time. I thought most of the songs were too long and the album was uneven. Since then, it's arguably my favorite Bowie album, and having seen Belew on tour with him made it even more special.
The master of his old songbook, this 1976 song ( with origins in 1975 formerly his 3rd rendition of 'John I'm Only Dancing') never getting old... here Bowie performs it with consummate elegance... looks as healthy & handsome as ever!!! Slick is still the best guitarist on the original 1976 studio track...
I didn't know that Adrian toured with Bowie after he left for the Talking Heads. Wow. This is a great version of the song, but as much as I love Adrian, I like the 1978 version because more of the band was featured; plenty of Adrian's solos, but more of a band performance than merely a showcase for Adrian.
I really like this video of "Stay", because it really shows how amazing Adrian Belew's guitar playing is. Not only that, I think it really illustrates what one could call his "methods" for mixing the pure sonic with tonality and the actual notes and structure of the song. What can't be shown is how he decides what is going to go where and when...
Fabulous song David was so brilliant and surrounded himself with brilliant musicians his wife his friends why must we die there are many species of trees that live longer than humans doesn’t seem right somehow. There will never be another bowie absolute brilliant man!! 1990 is when he met Iman. I read where the night he officially met her all he talked about was what he was going to name their children he fell head over heels immediately it was his birthday his hairdresser was also Iman’s. The hairdresser got them together. Iman said the birthday took place at a restaurant and there were only four people including her
As always Fiorella, another beautiful video, full of life and energy, reinvigorating and exciting to drive away the worries of the day. Thank you dear friend, couldn't think of a better way to start the new year. ♥♥♥♫♪♫♥♥♥☼♥♥♥♫♪♫♥♥♥
Luv the variance in the escalating chords in the verses... This song has odd origins as the third John I'm Only Dancing (Again), done in the Young Americans sessions, borrowing that patter for this version on Station To Station... the opening riff, new, was provided by Earl Slick... a really great track... Rock & funk meet
The Fender Stratocaster guitar is pretty reliable itself with regards to tuning given the stock nature of its' basic parts. They are really hard to break, and if you after a lot of work do manage to do so, they are modular in nature, you can add/replace as necessary. Adrian Belew being a top level musician with the commensurate salary, can get his guitars custom made to withstand the extra pressures he puts on a guitar...
There was a slight flub in the transition between Adrians’s intro and the first verse… But true to form, the rhythm section never missed a beat and they fell right back into it… Phenomenal band!!!
Anyone else notice the slight mistake on the start of the first verse at 2:02? Either Adrian Belew kept on too long with the intro solo or Bowie missed the timing of the beginning verse. :-)
From listening to live recordings and rehearsals for about 4 tours, I would wager Bowie missed his cue. He was prone to forgetting lyrics and placing them in the wrong order, probably nailing things down right before the tour got rolling...
@Scoobydoonut Although is the sound and vision of an artist struggling for his own safety, belonging to a generation that had already experienced a bit of everything, in an album that is still puzzling and surprising, it's difficult to resist the overwhelming cheerfulness that inspires this track. And, as you say, the worries fly away. Magically ! Thank you so much for sharing this moment, my darling.
Adrain could just keep on playing , they try and start the song twice while he just plays on ! Bending the neck of the guitar to cause a vibrato sound, WOW ! This man can make sounds on the guitar that haven't been heard before ! IM NOT WORTHY ! IM NOT WORTHY !!
@VampireBowie I fully agree with the overview on the album. An anguished creation, cryptic, steeped in loneliness and alienation from "this world" and by oneself, but also an intense invocation. STS was a poetic self-portrait, of one contradictory solipsism, fascinating for that tension admirably described in the inner dialogue of "Word on a Wing" (with hidden references on Sefirotic Tree...). Great Bowie. Thanks for your always interesting comment, my dear friend.
Adrian Belew is an amazingly talented guitarist. He’s also royally fucking up this song. There’s more to being a great guitarist than shredding, chief among them knowing how to FIT with the musicians around you. He could do that with Talking Heads just fine, but he’s absolutely not doing it here.
It's called musical masturbation. Belew did it as well as anyone. Good example of a talented guitarist making a good song boring, because his ego is writing checks that the song can't cash. Check out his 1977 or '78 live performance of the same song. He was fine, absolutely perfect.
I thought Earl Slick killed this tune, but WOW. Adrian Belew in full outer space Rock Star mode. So many great versions of Stay out there, but this one might be the most memorable.
Bowie was to me as big as the Beatles ! 100's of hits . Kinda like Zappa , had the best of what he could play with . Adrain is just one of the best he toured with !
is this one of the out-takes that didnt appear on the sound+vision tour video, from tokyo??? btw, never thought of the STS album in the way you guys have described it, always thought it was a product of the great man's cocaine-induced paranoia, certainly the title track!!! anyway, great video
I have listened to about 20 different live versions of stay and I just cannot get enough of this God damn song I am so disappointed he is gone
I'm sad he's gone too
Martin Cichocki me too 😔
why is this man so enchanting? always been for me....
Me too 😢
Will never get enough of Bowie...not EVER! It aches me that he is gone.
Adrian Belew is an animal.
I love how David let him run wild and loose.
Was David his keeper?
David gave him that stage!
Fantastic version! Bowie has performed this song almost on every tour: 1976, 1978, 1983, 1990, 1997, 1999 and 2002 and it is interesting to compare the different versions. Every of his bands added a different "colour" to it, and it always sounded great!
Yeah they updated with house style piano to make it contemporary for 1990.
I'll mourn his death, but consider myself lucky to have been born in the 60's & lived through the years of Bowie's music.
I won't mourn yours if you keep writing stupid comments.
You're really lucky.

did you not see the big error?
Yeah they updated with house style piano to make it contemporary for 1990.

Very gracious of Bowie sharing the stage with the great Belew. Adrian was TEARING IT UP!
That is on purpose.
It's a routine he first started doing on the '76 tour.
Hes said that's all hes gotta do until he sings.
ADRIAN BELEW OH MY GOD LIFE IS SO BEAUTIFUL
the man is supreme on his instrument
I've never heard about adrian before, but he's sick!.
I love his guitar playing
played with 'Talking Heads'
And Frank Zappa, King Crimson.......all the best!
Killer Version of a Killer Song! Listen to Adrian and Robert Fripp in King Crimson!!!
Bought the vinyl when it was released in 1976' I was 15, and played it endlessly. I get the same kick listening to it now as I did then. It's a stunning album from start to finish
I was 19... same.
David Bowie and everyone that worked with him had such talent and class! 💖💖🥂🍾🎤🎸🔥
Daaaaaammmmmnnnnn! He’s so talented and good looking / it breaks my heart. Truely.
Every live version of this is amazing. I loved Bowie's generosity to his fellow artists.
Dunno how many times I have seen this, was at the show in Milton Keynes 1990, blew my mind, David still does, I miss him so much

Grande versione di Stay...love Bowie forever
"Stay" was the song that made me go from passive Bowie listener to avid fanatic, and I've never looked back...
Absolutely love the outfit in this one. He looks like an older, more mature Thin White Duke.

BOWIE FOREVER!!
Stay this time!!!
Legend says that Bowie was in Berlin recording Low and one night he and Eno went to see Zappa live and Adrian was in that band
And that's where the story begins.
It's actually pretty funny how it plays out...
THATS HOW A FUCKING BAND SHOULD SOUND! Huge, massive, explosive, gigantic, otherworldly!
Adrian and Mick Ronson are both cut from the same bolt of cloth.
Just sublime
