Thanks for the tip. When I took the old screen door off the frame, it fell apart at the joints. For the new door, I cut the corner braces and glued and screwed them like you showed. Then I treated the entire frame with Thompson’s water seal. The door comes with two spring loaded hinges so I bought two more and used all four hinges. Might be a little overkill but this door is now solid without any sag. Thanks! (Total investment was $79 at Lowe’s)
Rotted old piece of garbage plywood you drain your oil on.....sloppily hacked up on your new screen door - Hilarious! Best laugh I've had in weeks. The corner bracing concept itself works tho
A couple of suggestions. Paint the door and the braces prior to installing the braces. Paint both side of the braces otherwise the plywood will weather from rain or snow. Put the braces on the screen side of the door and you won't have a place for insects and spiders to live.
They used these screen doors quite a bit in the old days, and another method of squaring was to use a turnbuckle and wire so they could kind of tweak it if things got a little weak. I'm needing a screen door like this, but your method seems to be a bit easier and a lot cheaper to fix a door.
Ha! I see the door listed online:$25! I am tempted too to buy one. In addition to the gussets you added, i'm thinking about adding some kind of ramp or block to the door jamb that will support the door when it's closed. This will lessen the chance of sagging. *We cheap bastards gotta make this $25 door work, godamnit!*
+Cooll Asice Yeah, even though it's junk, that price is too cheap to pass up. Your idea of supporting the door on the non-hinge side when closed is an excellent one, it would probably greatly extend to life of the door.
Up in Maine we call this a “thwacker” because of that sound! Anyway I bought one with 5 ?’s (posts on the bottom half). The wood is fj = finger joint. I did stain it the day after install but we got some huge rains. Needless to say the thing has expanded and will not shut. Do I have to call the carpenter back or is there a way for me to adjust hinges?
Since we often repeat things we are told in conversations, whether public or private, it appears you may have shared more than you probably wanted to with us @ 5:23. Tape Measure and pencil as well? To track progress of the little blue pill? Sorry, lets change the subject and compliment you on those rocking size 8 shoes. Oh wait, never mind.. LOL!! Just kidding, All in Fun. You are a pretty funny guy, but we all know the door sagged again.
Thanks! I just ordered this exact door which now costs $60.00. I can tell by looking at it that it will need a lot of help. Did this work? It looks like it would and sure would be simple to do. Thank you for your time.
I wonder how he painted the sides of the corner braces facing the screen. Should have done it before installing. At least on the inaccessible sides, leaving bare wood for glue.
Hmm nice repair :-)) I would say things like lift the top angle so the corner scrapes the top of the frame, it will still droop slightly and take longer to scrape on the floor. But we dont have screen doors in the uk so ill take it all back ha ha :-)) I think sheet steel "L" plates would have worked as well, but we dont all have such things sitting around to use do we :-)
***** Yes the weather is quite bloody cold at times lol, but at the moment we are having a odd heatwave, rather nice for a change :-)) The uk tends to be rather dull/cold/chilly/rain so i think most bugs dont enjoy that, i dont blame them lol. Typical bugs are daddylonglegs/flys/moths/bees/wasps, but not many unless you leave a window open at night with the light on ha ha.
I got that exact screen door. After painting the reinforcements and affixing them according to your directions, I mounted the door. Unfortunately, the door warped outward on the top, the opposite side of the hinges, leaving a gap. Now, I either have to attach a metal strip to the outside edge of it of buy an aluminum screen door to replace it. I'm seeing that, sooner or later, these cheap thin wood screen doors will fail without additional support.
+Jennies Garage .... Everything they sell is crap! When my dad came to town to visit, he put one of these on my back door (about 10 years ago) and bought me a quart of paint to paint it after he left.... I could see the time painting it would be wasted as it was falling apart within a day! I'm thinking about buying another one and reinforcing it before it goes up, since I don't have wood-working tools (to build one from scratch), other than hand saws, etc. Maybe it won't warp too soon!
@@garykorzelius5930 Doors are done like this routinely, but with nicer wood as the gussets dress doors up a bit while giving them more strength. Of course a turnbuckle can be used too, but not near salt water.
dude...u have the right idea, and i am all about trying to make my work look just a little bit better by adding an unneccessary 22.5 ,45, or so angle, to it, or whatever while the main goal is support or structural integrity. but seriously, IF U R GOING TO GO THRU THE TROUBLE OF MAKING 4 1/4 CIRCLES,COULDNT U FIND A BETTER,PRETTIER PIECE OF PLYWOOD? dang mann, it just looks like shit wirt that old wood... although, i do think that u do good work. happy days, budd
I am making my door from 2X4's ripped in half. It made a good strong outer frame. I have a blood hound that is going to want to sit & watch out the door so I needed to commit to a fence~screen door. LOLOL So I used 1/2 " hardware cloth on it along with the screening, just in case he saw a rabbit out the door. Now all I have to do is figure a way to lock it securely so he can't push the whole thing open. What do you think 2-3 hook & eye locks? Maybe electrify the whole screen. LOLOL Just kidding.
Yeah, worry about an eight. Because an eight has a habit of becoming a quarter when you dont watch it and with a door that thin and with glued reinforced corners you will end up with a door that does not close well. unless you like bugs, then go ahead.
I guess if the customer just wanted any cheap door that’s ok. They were acceptable in small town country homes or a backyard shed. Actually, back in the day folk made their own with much better quality lumber than we get today. I have one myself, but I did it intentionally because I was adding scroll work elements to it to dress it up. And yes it was all painted beforehand! Just a tip.

Well-caulked & painted shorts, crocs, white tee, and a plug-in sawyer w/ a super-suss power cord....it's like I'm watching myself!
Good vid, btw.
Great vid !! Just what I was looking for.... and funny too !! Oh and Rush is ok, but GENESIS is the ultimate Prog Rock !!
Please don't tell me you got paid to install this, Janky is too good of a word for this mess.
Lol right
Priming and painting your door and pieces all over will help with longevity. Great idea and looks good
Dude. You should invent corner braces!!!! 😂😂😂😂
What I want to know is how he found shorts to match the piece of scrap wood.

Hi, I think the wire is a good idea too, but I already had the plywood so I went that route. Thanks!

yay thanks for this vid! I have a screen door like this and I'm going to try fixing it up now :)
How did that work on the house you reinstalled it on? Did the fix work? Just curious. :P
hey man, looks like you need to do a vid on rat control......so they don't chew the crap out of your circular saw cord!!LOL!!!! good vid.

🤣🤩. Good video. Learned alot & laughed alot. Thanks
Wouldn’t a cross brace in both directions been easier? You could then adjust them to fit the door opening… just a thought.

He even used hinges, awesome
Wow he sure went out there on that one

Did the door last after posting this video 6yrs later?? I just bought the same door a week ago and now am afraid it's going to fall apart.
Can anyone recommend a door that is not so cheap?

Dude, use a turnbuckle! That's how we do it in the South.
That's a good idea
Also its how it is done anywhere that’s civilized

I used a turnbuckle.... but it keeps un-turning and sagging.
@@jeffkaege6660 How is it backing off? Is there any way to put a backing nut on it to prevent it form backing off?
OMG tighten your description up LOL. Just show us how it's done. And THANK YOU!! LOL
You could also use a turnbuckle
Can you make a video about keeping extension cords tidy.
Did the door stay on longer did the extra support worked????
what the story on the scooter in the back ground?
It's coming along, just finished doing some video today. Nice new profile pic btw :0)
yea i took a picture of a t-shirt i saw at target, its a sugar skull of Darth Vader. it says I'm your father in spanish

I would very much love a ink to your pallet door!! It sounds awesome
Very nice 👍
I just used a turn buckle
