This is a great breakdown. I have oftren wondered such questions.
I have switched over to Penn reals from my previous Shimano days as I find that for the price point, in general, the Penns are smoother, have killer decals and take a good deal of abuse.
Reels purchased so far are the Wrath (x 2 5000) and the Pursuit IV (3000). No complaints so far.

Love the review and the info.
And it all depends on how often you go fishing. If it's casual, like once per month, then wrath will do. If you go often, few days every week, then invest a bit more for a slammer.
Also, a used slammer can cost as a new wrath but due to durability it just might outlast the new wrath. :)

I only use serious tackle and wouldn't even consider a wrath. I use stuff like authority, saltigas and stellas, van staals and avets and accurates. But fish every day, and only for big fish. I'm a trophy striper hunter

Don't worry about it, for the money the wrath is still fine and you'll get plenty of fish on it as long as you rinse with freshwater after every trip and don't abuse it. I have 2 wraths in 8000 size that I've used on the Texas coast surf fishing and caught plenty of oversize reds, a couple of small sharks and more stingrays than I like to think about.

I just went on eBay and if you search "penn carbon drag washers WRATH" you can purchase carbon replacements for $8.99. Thanks for the idea, I just ordered a set and that makes for a good future video...super charging the Wrath..

hey I was wondering if you ever seen the zebco bite alert spinning reel that lights up and makes sound? it's a catfish combo but I really wanna know if it's a gimmick or legit as a reel

    • @CastFromTheHip
      @CastFromTheHip  2 года назад +1

At the price point and if I know Zebco, they are the kings of cheap fishing reels and quirky gimmicks. They have legit reels and good line-ups like the Zebco 33 Platinum. But they throw the kitchen sink at all consumers and they see what sticks. A cheap Penn or Shimano Combo would probably serve you much better. Those two companies are the kings of spinning reels. However, if this bite-alert reel is for a kid, it might be the best option to keep them engaged and teach them how to fish. I doubt the battery and reel will live through too many fishing seasons though.
      Thanks for stopping by!

Dude, unfortunately my ol lady DOES know lol. Now i wish i never got her into going on fishing trips and shopping for gear though it is nice that we share that commin interest. I like that you fish your slammer on a gx2. Usually when i buy a new bad ass reel ive already shucked out enough money that I shouldnt get a carnage, star, phoenix black diamond, g loomis etc. but then a month and a half later i end up doing it anyway. ending up with all these extra ugly stik's laying around. Out of the lower budget penn reels, i enjoy the pursuit iii (havent had a 4 yet) for the simple fact that they have carbon fiber drag washers already installed. Ive read some eyebrow raising reviews that just turned me off to ever buying a wrath but still solid none the less. The wrath and the pursuit 3 series and a above are great gifts for the kids to treat in a way that kids just treat things. CARELESS lol while still being able to land a fish that would that make lifetime memories.

Haha well at least she's interested in fishing. My wife only cares about being on a boat, but she does take note of every new reel I show up with. Dude I'm weird, I buy expensive reels and run cheap rods....I guess in about 9 years I've only had one spinning rod break (I break fly fishing rods like every other year).
The Pursuit's are nice reels. I smoked a Gen 1 down in Florida with a big Jack Crevalle, the drag got vaporized. I don't think they had carbon at the time. The Wrath is a great burner reel for people who aren't Fishing zealots. I just did a charter in New Orleans and the guide had one Wrath amongst all his Battle 3s. The Wrath looked like it had been through hell, it probably had another 6 months left in it.
Anyway, thanks for stopping by and sharing your insights.

Great Olympia beer product placement. I don't think it's made in Tumwater any longer.
Look at all the companies owned by Pure Fishing Inc. A lot of the companies that compete against each other are all part of the parent company, or as I like to think The Umbrella Corporation...

Hi Guy's help req'd... one of those req'd features google won't find.... I am fishing for Sea Bass from a high cliff 100 meters (110 yards) with no access down... I gotta reel them all the way up, dead weight n all.
I know most reels will reel up the fish but here's the deal... when reeling in water and reeling a dead weight (2- 2.5kg - 4lb)... that's a whole different league of power, smoothness and build quality. Kinda the ultimate test of a reel quality you could say.
I am hoping some of you Guy's know which reels stand out for this? An open faced reel weighing around 485-500grams (1pound or just over) to match my rod and allow other uses. Thank You Guy's in advance.

I have top tier reels and they are so expensive, i am very careful not to get even the tiniest scratch, or getting sand or water on it. With the reels on the same level as the Penn Wrath, you don't worry about being careful, because it's cheap and your wallet won't take a big hit. I take great care with my gear, so the Penn Wrath in my hands will last decades or more. Just look at all the classic old surf reels, no ball bearings, but still going strong. The big difference is their owners. They get cleaned and lubed, so they will last fr generations.
