Just goes to prove the X5 is a REAL off-road SUV, not some kind of crossover like its competitors are making. Also handles quite decent on-road for an SUV.
@@Word-Life you have a point when you mention articulation etc. However bare in mind that this is a proper SUV (speed luxury comfort) not like a land cruiser, Pajero (montero) or any other SUV like a land rover discovery which are built from proper off-roading heritage. It’s more like a Range Rover from at the time 05 when BMW owned Land Rover Range Rover at the time. In addition you mention cheaper trucks (SUV) like the pathfinder they are meant for off-road it from the Independant 4x4 (switch) and low range it shows it’s meant to be used off road. @@Word-Life x5 s articulation is for high speed roads.... and its handle verry good on offroad... other offroad car( for offroad) will roolover at first turn
I have one, they are amazing off road performers especially in areas where most vehicles get stuck, plenty of traction and torque in the N62 engine, the shorter frame of the 2003-2007 makes it a better rock climber. I would recommend expanding the wheel wells and bigger springs and tires if you are serious about it. And yeah the shiftable auto trans in these are much better, .
@@JeffreyJamesLippold great engine choice, here in Europe i'd still choose the 3 Liter diesel because of economy and NM torque. There is a lifting kit available somewhere in NA for the e53 X5. Heard of somebody fitting a locking rear diff and other differentials to an x5, that would make it the complete Allrounder
Got a 2003 e53 diesel since 8 years, bought with abs issues 100Kmiles, repaired. Now it’s 190Kmiles. Just bought another e53 4.8is with 80Kmiles some repairs todo and hopefully will last 200Kmiles :) Did some offroad with the diesel one, never had much issues, and still handle road great.
I have a 2005 x5 and they are incredibly capable. It's true the X5 doesn't have a locking diff but if you press the DSC off button in your center console. It will transfer power to all four wheels instead of letting the computer decide which wheels gets the power.
That’s a great tip. Thanks for posting that but I don’t understand why the DSC interferes with traction. I thought it was supposed to always send Power to the wheels that have traction.
@@Shibu11229 From my understanding, in normal road conditions, sending more power to the wheel that has more traction and reducing the wheel that is slipping, this will cause instability. The car will turn to the slipping side. This can be dangerous on normal roads, so it's better to reduce the power on the traction side, to keep the initial direction. This technique is quite opposite the off road conditions, where speed is low and stability is not important. You just need to have more power on what ever wheel that is touching the ground to pull out the car.
Thanks for posting. I’m looking at these. I do a lot of bird photography and could really use something like this off road for my travels. Is that a sunroof or is it just a glass roof? Any issues I should look for with getting one?
