Had a 2013 X5 with the 3.0 litre turbo diesel.
Just traded it in after 330,000 km (200,000 miles or close to it) of generally maintenance free driving.
It tended to wear the tyres pretty quickly and drove across the Australian desert 4 times.
Apart from basic maintenance and servicing through BMW no dramas.
    My new car - a new (2021) X5 M.

@@515ventures3 Take care of them and they’re flawless. I have a 2016 X5 (F15 Gen), and 4 years and 80,000 later, I haven’t had any issues aside from one of the soft close doors failing. Fixed for free under warranty.

    • @515ventures3

@@mattX5 I understand that and that is awesome! But it’s very hard to find high mileage BMW’s. I can find loads of Japanese car stories reaching 400-500,000 miles. Anyone can find a dirt cheap X5 that is 15 years old with 150-200,000 miles on it, for just a few grand. And then you look at a Toyota 4Runner or Toyota Tacoma that is 15 years old, with 150,000+ miles on it and it will cost $10,000+! That’s a big red flag on a X5 for that cheap. And this happens all over the place. Another example is the 7 series. There’s tons of 7 series with 150-200,000 miles on them for just a few grand to buy. Once costed $80,000+. It’s just proof which country knows how to build long lasting vehicles. And most people know this. If money is no big deal, then this won’t bother people. But if I don’t have extra cash to spend on a old X5, where a part will set me back $1,500, I will just go with a 4Runner. Which will not typically do that to me. Also an X5 and a 4Runner are very different vehicles too. One is good on the road, the other is very good off-road.

It's solid and carried many of DYI materials overall. Maybe have to consider parting away before the real expensive repairs(transmission and engine) comes.

I have a 2011 E70 3.5d that had the DEF temp sensor that went bad after 2 years. The dealer replaced the DEF tank but 2.5 years later my DEF went bad ($4.5K). BMW covered 70% but I suspect that the DEF temp sensor issue contributed to that problem. My mx issue have basically went away after I started taking my car to an independent BMW specialist who only hire master techs. My car has been amazing (8 yrs old now), solid as a rock. I always thought that the dealers knew best, but I am now a convert of some of these BMW indy shops. I have had Lexus and Toyotas, and the drive quality of the X5 (especially with the M sport suspension) is amazing even after all of these years. For some of you who are still considering it, don't let this video discourage you. There is a great YTer call ExoticCar PlayPlace who debates that BMWs are much better than Toyotas and Lexus. He has some great videos so I would encourage you to check it out. Peace!

I also had a BMW X5 diesel probably one of the best cars I’ve ever owned. On average I will get nearly 600 miles to a tank full of diesel which I thought was tremendous it is absolutely right about the power coming out of their engine is just fantastic at lore p.m. and on the road. As far as the DEF fluid that’s a very easy do it yourself fix. You can go to BMW and pay $300 for an oil change, It is a found out if you want to do it yourself and buy the DEF from them it was $40. Total rip off, you can go to any convenient store on the road pick it up for about six bucks to about $22 for a premium brand DEF fluid and it take about 10 minutes. I also have the same trouble having to replace both DEF tanks in the BMW it was a recall item and to replace them will cost $5000. But overall had very little maintenance issues with the car and really enjoy driving it. And now in a BMW X6M which is a total thrill to drive, But the gas mileage is far from fun.

My prediction for the next things to fail: The main thermostat will not allow the engine to get up to full temperature and this will prevent the system from regenerating the DPF which will then block up and need replacing. The secondary thermostat will burst dumping all the coolant. You'll replace it, and the new one will burst too. The starter motor will get slow and drain the battery and both will need replacing. The navigation will fail. You'll then have 50k miles of trouble free motoring, but then it will all happen again. And then the swirl flaps will disintegrate and drop into the cylinders destroying the motor. Can you tell I didn't enjoy my ownership experience too much lol

In April of 2017 I purchased CPO 2014 BMW X5 xDrive35i from a BMW dealer with 29k miles. I hit a few potholes, nothing that bad I mean I am driving one of rather best SUV's out there. Right? So I to heard a noise when running at low speeds it was like the passenger wheel rotated it made an odd noise. So guess what, the service center that I go to advised that I blew a strut. This is an $75k+ SUV that touts how reliable and advertise that they are smooth off road. Great looking ride that can't take a hit on a pothole at 38K miles on it now October 2019. Do yourself a favor and don't buy one. This was a great video and just wanted to post my experience. Never again. If you have a great mechanic or you are a DIY have fun. Back to Honda. I owned a VW Touareg TDI diesel which in my opinion is a fine car that costs less than a X5 35d. Due to the emission cheating issue however my car had to be recalled so I’m currently in the market for a new car. I hear on VW online chat rooms that diesel engined cars need to be driven, once in a few weeks, at a speed of 100km/h or up to blast off residues from the exhaustion or something like that. Otherwise the Ad Blue (or DEF in BMW) could be easily clogged. If fact the manufacturer has a suggestion to this effect. So I guess the same principle may also apply to BMW diesel cars. Hope this helps someone.

    • @assaulter99

If you’re not mechanically inclined at a high-level it is not worth the price of ownership for any BMW.
The check engine issue with DEF is a known defect on all X5 diesels and there is an open class action lawsuit for that. Also the warranty has been extended to 10 years 150,000 miles. At some point you will have the second expansion tank also replaced bc there are two. Next in line will be your DEF filter which is not covered under warranty. If you purchase the Carly diagnostic tool, you will be able to extend the DEF filter life by running cleaning sequences.

    BMW X5 XL model
I have been researching about the BMW X5, my
preference is 2008 onward. I have come across an issue that may influence
greatly my decision making, I realized that there are XL models, unfortunately
there is almost no information about the difference between these models (XL)
and the others. I have also realized that it seems to be a little bit difficult
to find auto parts for the XL model. I would not like to import a model that
will cause me headaches finding the parts. I also noticed that the XL model weighs
1800KG, whereas the other models weigh 2100KG. Does the XL model weight have anything
to do with the material used? Does it have more plastic? Can you or anyone else
clarify me about the XL model?

I have an '09 E70 3.0 inline 6 (non diesel) and just turn 177,000 miles. I absolutely love the vehicle but it has been VERY expensive to maintain. Currently the vehicle is in a "quiet period" and I am confident that this year will be one of the lower cost years. You should figure on average about $3k per year on repairs...mine is paid for so do the math for cost. As much as new vehicles are these days I am OK with that annual cost. There are items that I am not going to fix such as the sunroof (plastic rim cracked and it is over $1,000 to fix). My auto back hatch doesn't work and it will cost about $800 to fix...putting that one off. We manually lift the hatch, it is hard to open. I have a hockey buddy mechanic and the cost to repair is approx. 30% less than the dealership (thieves). The items covered in this video are "minor". I have replaced the thermostat and water pump 2x each, air bag shocks, head cover gasket, radiator 2x, front suspension completely re done. My gear shift gave out and went limp, had a used one installed...total cost $500. Ditched the run flat tires...if I get a flat I'm SOL. Will be giving the vehicle to my high school aged son in about a year if it is still running. We use it for frequent long road trips and that is when it shines the brightest...awesome on the open road, just a joy to drive. It is very good in the snow too...new tires this past year made it fantastic in snow.

With a price tag of this degree you would think they would build these much better & with more quality & care! There's no reason why you have to pay for a vehicle like this twice in it's life time.Cost of ownership & vehicle purchase price just adds up to ludicrous amounts of dough! Is it really worth it? If you care more about prestige/image then yes but if your like me, more bang for my buck kinda guy would I purchase this vehicle? Considering the issues & nuisances involved probably not! Having an extended warranty could help but if it's my hard earned cash heck no! Great review & very informative info now I'm second guessing myself on this one! Got a good deal here on an 07' but maintenance issues really concern me? but it's a 4.8i not the diesel which is just fine with me.

My 2008 X5 was a disaster. Spent many thousands in repairs in just a few years after the warranty expired. Oil drain pan leak, coolant leak that could not be fixed, replaced valve covers, check engine light on and off again, various sensors, battery drain problems, replaced starter, etc. Looked at Consumer Reports after I bought it and saw where reliability and customer satisfaction was low. I really wanted to like the car. It drove and looked great. But I was scared to drive it to see what warning light would come on next.

However if you buy a bad one, it'll eat your wallet. Drive em hard, listen to the motor, it'll be worth having. You let it sit ~ it will grow into the ground.😉

    • @TheTestDrive
      @TheTestDrive  6 лет назад +7

Something can go wrong with any car, but with a BMW it's always going to be more expensive. That said I feel a BMW, especially a diesel, has the ability to last a very long time, but how much money you have to spend to get it there will determine if it's ultimately worth it. I know BMW owners with over 100k miles who have never had anything break but others who have had to spend quite a bit of money on repairs. If you're looking for a luxury vehicle that's less expensive to maintain, I think Lexus is great. I don't think they quite match the driving experience of a BMW (or Mercedes or Audi for that matter), but they are very reliable and last a long time, as well as being extremely comfortable to drive.

The dealer will usually do it when you bring it in for an oil change so it should last at least 10,000 miles. But mine was running low because of the sensor issue. The sensor must’ve been causing it to use more DEF which explains why I could sometimes smell the urea upon startup.
