Formed in 1970, Emerson, Lake & Palmer helped define and set new standards throughout one of the most ambitious and experimental periods in 20th-Century popular music. Drawn from The Nice, King Crimson, and Atomic Rooster respectively, they were hailed as progressive rock’s first supergroup. Combining driving dynamics, intricate arrangements, and virtuosic skill, between 1970 and 1978, ELP released seven studio recordings and three live albums. Such was their popularity on both sides of the Atlantic that their records repeatedly achieved Platinum status sales.
Titles such as Tarkus, Trilogy, and Brain Salad Surgery created distinctive worlds that incorporated soaring themes, other-worldly timbres, yearning ballads, humorous pastiche and dramatic long-form conceptual works. While they adapted pieces by classical composers as stylistically varied as Bartok, Mussorgsky, Copland, Ginastera and Rodrigo, ELP sounded like nobody else but themselves.
The trio performed live one final time at London’s High Voltage Festival in July 2010 just weeks short of their debut gig 40th anniversary.
Although Keith Emerson and Greg Lake both sadly passed away in 2016, interest in ELP continues to grow, and Carl Palmer’s own band regularly performs a setlist dedicated to the unique music he helped create. ELP's music continues to find new audiences more than 50 years from their beginning, a striking testament to the group's irrepressible blend of energy, eclecticism, and visceral excitement.

OMG...the memories I have back when this was released... beautiful song and good times!
I must be your age, and I could not have said it in a better way than you did.
@@MexicoDigDoctor I'm 63 years young...and this song still turns me on! Chevrolet has an ad out and they've using Grand Funk Railroad's song I'm Your Captain/ I'm Getting Closer To Home. I'm going to have to pull my vinyl off the shelves and spin some platters this weekend! I still have my red Panasonic Ball and Chain AM radio my grandfather got me for Christmas in 1972! It still works great! I loved growing up in the 60s and 70s...great decades that gave us amazing music! One thing though...not everybody was Kung Fu fighting...some people were just regular fighting and some people weren't fighting at all...just sayin '...lol!!💥😎💖🤼
I remember this song, the sweet suburban girl and my friend's room over 50 years ago, one of the memorable moments of my misspent life, haha
Weren't we the Lucky ones!
Takes me back too. I remember where I was and who I was with when I heard this. College days, falling in love with a guy….I wish I could go back to that time.
This song is one of the best. It should have millions of likes!
hear, hear. Ranks up with C'est La Vie
Hear hear !!! Always a fan of this classic song - born in 53 - grew up with ELP in my teens - there was no better!
The song takes you right back to the..70's...ya..i was right there...good times..good memories..😊❤💯
Do you wanna be an angel, do you wanna be a star?
Do you wanna play some magic on my guitar?
Do you wanna be a poet, do you wanna be my string?
You could be anything
Do you wanna be the lover of another?
Undercover you could even be the man on the moon
Do you wanna be the player, do you wanna be the string?
Let me tell you something
It just don't mean a thing
You see it really doesn't matter when you're buried in disguise
By the dark glass on your eyes
Though your flesh has crystallized
Still, you turn me on
(...)
Still, you turn me on
Mmmm, you turn me on
Do you wanna be the pillow where I lay my head?
Do you wanna be the feathers lying in my bed?
Do you wanna be the cover of a magazine?
Create a scene?
Every day a little sadder, a little madder
Someone get me a ladder
Do you wanna be the singer?
Do you wanna be the song?
Let me tell you something
You just couldn't be more wrong
You see I really have to tell you, that it all gets so intense
From my experience, it just doesn't seem to make sense
Still, you turn me on
(...)
Mmmm, you turn me on, yeah
Mmmm, you turn me on
My older brother had a few of their LPs that he bought back in the 1970s.
Because of him, I was exposed to ELP , among many other bands and music genres.
He passed away last April, just short of turning 71.
Thank you, dada. 🙏
"Dada" is an honorific commonly used for addressing elder brothers in my country.
🎉
Same with my bro when he introduced me to the dudes, with Hallowed Be Thy Name
Is probably hanging out with the best musicians ever
My brother I want to listen to The Beatles in one room and rock and roll and name it my mom would be listening to rhythm and blues and jazz and the kitchen and living room and my sister will be listening to Casey casem greatest hits top 40 during the late 60s and early 70 play yummy yummy yummy I've got love in my tummy
@@CynthiaPollack-on4us he was the lead guitar and singer in his (boarding,) school band. At that time, The Shadows were his idols.

Greg Lake. What a Maestro.
Greg Lake & Keith Emerson always in our hearts.💐
Amazing Musician with the “Perfect” Voice….
Wow! How great to listen to this beautiful track and remember how great was the 70s! RIP Emerson and Lake!
This beautiful melody sealed my love for my future husband. He knew what turned me on! ELP!
Listening to ELP for the first time, and I already love it.
Listen to 1974 California jam doing this song. The mastery of his musicianship is amazing.🤘🔥💪
Simple, beautiful, not overblown….just perfect
I cry and think of him when this song comes on ..
Every time I hear this its like a time machine wisks me back to a time when music defined us. Its like these songs wrote the story of our lives
You are so right! 71 and appreciating our music more now than ever, if it were remotely possible! How can one encapsulate the spiritual, emotional, and political thoughts and beliefs of those times - such tumultuous times. Music was our voice. ELP was one of several who were able to capture the spirit of the Baby Boom generation. Unless you lived through it, you will never understand how connected our generation became.
I work at a Deli where our generation's music is played. Gen Z and Millennials love it! It's legendary, meaningful, and timeless. Peace out! ✌️
Beautiful song, wonderful guitar and vocals !!!
Wonderful song 😊
I STILL CANT HELP CRANK THE VOLUME UP TO THE MAX WHEN I PLAY THIS ALBUM AND WATCH MY SPEAKERS MOVE AND FALL OVER

Wow! Brings to mind so many great memories!!! Beautiful
One of my top 5 band of all times!!!
Out of so many great ELP songs, this one is my favorite.
This and "Closer to Beggining" are my two favorite Emerson Lake & Palmer songs. The live version is even better.
Oh you mean "Closer to Believing" !
@@ohsweetladyjane Or "From The Beginning?
Amazing album cover by giger and great music skills.
Don't forget, he was chewing gum while he sang. He was never without it.
Yeah theres a teason for that singers do that to keep their mouths from getting dried out
It's how he keep his timing.
Oh to be that piece of gum.
😁
@@DigitalDJman Seriously? From Greg Burger King Lake, I expected better. No wonder Fripp kicked him the fuck out.

My brother turned me on to ELP when I was 16..They still turn me on...
You guys were my very first concert...I must have been 14 or 15 years old......you still have my heart.......
I was born in the San Francisco Bay Area in the fifties so I was able to watch ELP perform live and this particular song would always blow my mind and take my breath away! Those were the days. I hear this song, close my eyes and I'm right back there in the moment!
Us baby boomers were very fortunate to grow up in the greatest music era ever and living in California during that period was like winning the music lottery! 🎉💃🎶🎸🎊
It's a sad shame what they've done to your city!!
@@goodbyebluesky5770 Yes, it is and it's going to get worse before it gets better. We just have to hang in there and stay positive. Thank you**🌈🌼🍃🕊
@@aprilkitten You're right, it's probably going to be devastating for a lot of people.
Good luck to you and your family AK!
I remember vividly that time, living in Vallejo, being so young. Sure went waaay fast.😊
Always thought their music was a notch above alot of the music that was coming out back then.
Your never gone, still listening.❤❤❤❤
Poetry!! Woos me... The majik..of...it
The art of being woo'd is lost... Sadly... This does it... Lord it does

Permanent Shadow...4th on my morning Playlist
🎉❤
My 1st "big" concert. ELP at Yale Bowl, around 73'
Along with Tarkus of course BSS their finest hours. Shockingly inventive, aggressive Prog Rock to live forever. How to go from 1974- just 4 years to 1978- and 'Love Beach.' Baffling.
❤
Greg Lake meu ídolo forever
Obra celestial ❤❤❤❤❤
Yes
Just love that wah-wah effect!! FYI: first used by Frank Zappa :)
I miss the 70's and 80's so very, very much . Everything was such fun, it was always a surprise, there was hope, legends, dreams, oily motorbikes, old banger cars we loved, denims, pubs where you hung out, juke boxes, hot summers and cold winters, fish and chips for two in newspaper, crazy fashion styles, fun all night on a fiver.....
These days it's all been corrupted. Viruses, wars, toxic media, bloody spotify, Chinese made JD Sport tracksuits, establishment funded musicians, lies. It's all just a pile of shit now.
We saw the best of times. We saw the worst of times.
its like my friend pointed out, look at that baby boomer with the running shorts, its a messed up generation that buys and sells everything it comes across
Love the wa-wa - whatever happened to the wa-wa - missing it
someone get me a ladder!
🖤🖤🖤
Memories….
Saw them in concert in Memorial Coliseum, Tuscaloosa Alabama in the mid seventies (Last millennium)
They still Turn me on!
This reminds me of my youth. Being an airman at Davis Monthan AFB, Tucson, Arizona.
Short, but sweet. Artwork by H.R. Giger....
Beautiful 12 string guitar song. Greg singing this while chewing gum.
❤❤❤❤❤
Just amazing❤
Thank god we have the recordings of all the 70s rock bands It went so wrong after that’s steady decline in talent with. A few exceptions until we get to today when it’s all computer generated talent show garbage

Om?
I was to 8 Year so my mom wouldn't let me go to cal jam but my sister got to go
Help me hahaha 😊
What
Still have the album ❤️ and rap is crap
Somewhere a modern sound engineer is thinking how much better this would sound with Autotune.......
I highly doubt it. Greg Lake had one of the best, strongest, cleanest, clearest, voices of his time. As young as he was when ELP recorded this album, the quality of his voice was beyond his years.
❤
