This video warmed my heart. As a dad with two grown daughters, I enjoyed watching a woman tackle a job like this ( hot to mention recording and posting online). I especially liked the little finger snap at the beginning :). Well done.
I leave my home for 4-6 months every year. Every year I come back-there is no water going into dishwasher. I go to You Tube to see what to do. I check the float valve, water valve, water on/off. With just one primer of a gallon of water-it's done. Thank you for that simple solution. It's seems I've been making it harder than it needs to be every year. Hollie-you are the only one who has EVER said to prime it. Women rock!!
With mine, After talking to my youngest ( the Geek guy) I listened and thought I heard the click on valve, so I assumed it was trying.. He had me ensure water was getting to valve then As a "try", I shut water off and undid the water inlet feed then I used the bristle end of a battery terminal cleaner- gently scrubbing inside the valve. Son said Newer dishwashers have a check valve in the drain valve that sends a signal allowing the fill valve to engage. Mine does not have that feature but He did have me run 3 coffee jugs of vvery hot water and forcing the drain cycle each time. This he said would clean out any grease ect that could be impeding operation. Put it back together and Mine ran like new and had much better sound during drain cycle. I cleaned the screen filter while I had it off checking for debris in pump sump area also.. I have run 4 cycles.:)))
I typically do all of my own repair work as well, but for some reason, my brain never went to checking to see if there was silverware under that float! Guess what .. There was a spoon there, and now that has been removed, it's working. Thank you!
Thanks a lot for a great video. I had to surf the RUclips for a solution and and ended up nothing useful. Your one popped up and I started watching and strated with the cheating bit with the water and you know what, it worked. I do genuinely appreciate your help and many thanks. Keep up the good work.
You are a genius!! I have been having this issue for about 2 months now, and live in an apartment. I have put in work order after work order and they just keep telling me “I ran the cycles- it works” sure it turns on, but it never uses water! Sheeeeesh. I was about to break down and buy a new one instead of “using” this one that the apartment supplied. I ”tricked my dishwasher” with a gallon of water, and it worked!!! Now I am able to let them know the specific issue so they can finally come and fix it! Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video!
Awesome! I ordered the inlet valve at $8 at ebay. I am going to tackle to fix it today. I watched other video, but he did not show the actual working part underneath the dishwasher. But you showed the actual labor part replacing the part! Two thumbs UP! Hollieguyver!
Nice video! And great job fixing the DW yourself. I might add that using a socket in place of the wrench could make this job easier; and wrapping the Teflon tape the OTHER way may help keep the tape from unraveling as the part is being screwed in.
I just fixed mine by hitting the float with a wooden spoon... the float inside can get stuck and tapping it can knock it loose. Easiest fix ever and required no disassembly! (Try this first!)
I can't work out what's wrong with our dishwasher, I've tried everything. Just watched your video and as well as being mega impressed with your repair I think I'm gonna give a new water inlet valve a try, cheers
Thanks for suggesting tricking it by adding water it did wash my dishes, also i cleaned float, i was prepared to buy an inlet valve, but first i took lower sprayer arm off to make sure it was not plugged , and with it off it was filling with water , i put the sprayer arm back on and its working, i dont get it, iv been doing dishes by hand.but its a whirpool 18 years old , and i have never used the dry cycle.and it never gave me any real trouble.so anyway thanks for your video😃
I'm a industrial maintenance technician I can fix a half a million dollar CNC machine but I don't know a damn thing about a dishwasher Lol . Thank you Hollie you showed me what's wrong and how to fix my dishwasher your awesome
I mean if you’ve never done it before it would be kind of weird to expect excellence the first time. CNCs are not dishwashers and vice versa. She probably could figure it out eventually though. Clever and sexy. Killing it. Most girls my age are not willing to even try. Most of the men as well. It’s sad really.
I got the solenoids for $13 each Canadian $. I bought 3 of them they were so cheap. If the bracket is slightly different , you can reuse the old bracket and screw it onto the blue plastic solenoid. I have all the showers in my house controlled with these solenoids also , so when I take a shower , I just flip the switch on the wall, the the shower comes on and I wait about 3 minutes until it gets to the right temperature and then I take a shower and I have a switch in the shower to shut it off. The shower switch is a three way switch and it is mounted in a rain proof outdoor plastic switch box, cemented into my tile work to look decent. So you don't have to play with the shower valve to get the right temperature, you just leave it set to the same place and the wall switch just shuts off the water to the shower head so that the temperature setting is never changed.
I did the same thing but it turned out that the old water inlet valve was good. What was not working was the water float switch. Test your old inlet valve before you replace it. A simple continuity test with a meter will tell you it’s still good. Mine was and I spent $20 to replace it when it was fine.
Thank you so much for this. I’m so proud of myself watched your video and found out it was just the float. Don’t know why it was stuck but it’s working fine now.
Great video! Easy to understand. Also, you are smart about tricking it with water. Thanks! (Unfortunately, mine is not the inlet valve issue. After water got pumped, it just sits there and does nothing. No drain issue either.)
Lucky! Working on my old GE Potscrubber DW, same problem, replaced water inlet valve, float switch, pump inlet seal - still no water. DW is getting water to it - always keep in mind that the line going to the DW could be plugged, or I saw some people install DW with FloodSafe hoses, which may trip and stop water flow to DW - supposedly these can be reset if they trip. I installed a Floodstop unit on my fridge icemaker line and my DW, so if the sensor gets wet that you place underneath, it will shut off the flow of water - it also tests the water valve once a month by turning the water supply off and on -
Great video! When you roll your tape you might want to apply tape in the same direction as the other piece goes on. That would be clock wise. No biggie it just helps sometimes.
Think I have your same dishwasher just in black, funny the book that came with it doesn't list "not filling with water" as a item to check on their troubleshooting pages, LOL, they def want you to call a plumber.. I am so glad the Tarantula that is living underneath your dishwasher didn't get you,,, OMG gf vacuum those spider webs out,, tyvm you're awesome
Hollie, thank you. Didn’t know about float, checked it first and found a fork stuck underneath stopping it from moving up and down. What a great invention RUclips can be. Saved me $$$$ thanks.
Hollie, you should get yourself one of these 4 way screwdrivers from Harbor Freight. It should be called a 6 way because if you pull the bits out, the center become a nut driver. One side is 5/16” and the other is 1/4”. It is much easier than using the wrench on those little hex head screws. They are usually on sale for $1.99 or you can either sign up for their catalogs or look for the coupons in the junk mail you get, or in magazines and newspapers and they frequently have them free with any purchase with coupon. You can buy a 59 cent wallpaper knife or whatever you see cheap in the store. It’s great that you posted because I think a lot of ladies see the men doing it and think they can’t do it and as you obviously know you they can.
Not be critical but you should wrapped the teflon tape on in the opposite direction, looking at the bottom of the fitting it would be clockwise. Also there is no need to put teflon tape on the water line side . the water line itself is a compression fitting that provides the seal.
The part I especially like is when she patronizes her area's local businesses. 2:01 She pays a visit to her faithful brick-&-mortar hardware store, and perhaps even likely consults their expertise... But that's ALL she pays them = "Screw You! (and the rent you rode in on), cuz I can buy this item online at HALF your lousy price!" [ storms out of store ] -- (but not first without purchasing a selfie-stick at checkout -- useful for making this RUclips video)
Why would I pay double? I went there to get the part and not consult them for their expertise. I like to shop around and make sure I can get the best deal. My question to you….Do you ever shop around before you buy something? And you’re wrong, I didn’t use a selfie stick while filming this video.
@@holliebillings4870 Great video Hollie! So good of you to share your experiences with the World. God will bless you back! And please do not be discouraged by what Thumbs Down said. You gave a shining example of what RUclips was designed to provide... real-world experience and advice on how to do things yourself and save money! There will always be naysayers on social media. Ignore them! We love what you did! I have been noticing an intermittent "delay" in my washer starting when I press the start button and close the door. I checked the "float" and it seems to be working fine. If it happens again, I will take your advice and try "tricking" the washer by filling the bottom with some water. Good to know that I can consider the water inlet valve next if I still have any issues. Thanks again Hollie - I am now a subscriber!
Teflon tape is supposed to be put on with the tightening screw thread, she put it on any old way which happened to be against the tightening thread, but it still didn’t leak, but the chances of leaks r less if she did it with the thread
Hi I tried adding a gallon of water. Dishwasher simply drains the water and stops and starts flashing LE error in a few minutes. It's an LG dishwasher. Any suggestions ? Thanks.
Hi Hollie! If a CAN trick the dishwasher into washing the dishes, does that ALWAYS mean I have a bad inlet valve? My property manager seems thinks to think "the pump is dry" and I just need to "put some water inside to get it started". Is what he's talking about even a thing???
Helps to have a socket driver on an electric drill for those pesky 8 mm screws (bolts). Also a heat gun to blow wet wires etc Not sure if teflon is needed for those threads - anyone know? Very helpful video
Hollie Billings I’m thinking the inlet valve failed first and the lack of water damaged the circulation pump...for it won’t fill and your trick doesn’t get it running. Maybe the pump got some debris, I’m exploring tomorrow , today is watching more videos and make a plan.
Great video! And i love the finger snap and how everything got quiet 🤣. My Mom use to do the same thing to me when i was a kid.

I appreciate your mentioning that we could put in 1 gallon of water to 😉 "trick" the dishwasher into cleaning the dishes.

So proud of you!! And your hair looks great.
Thank you so much! It was the float. I just had to adjust it. Lucky me. But thanks for the help. Very kind of you to put this up.
Perfect! So happy I could help you. The float is an easy fix.

Let me look into this
I’m impressed
Good job

I’m not quite sure to be honest. But if it works by adding water, then most likely it’s the inlet value.
good job
Your awesome. Just like mama.
Thanks for this.Hod bless you
You good Mama..
Impressive!
Thank you!!!!!
Unloosen? Does that mean tighten?
No, it means to undo or let free.
Good show, do it yourself.
Thank you. Glad I can help.
A woman that fixes her own appliances... Please Marry Me!
Helps to have a socket driver on an electric drill for those pesky 8 mm screws (bolts).
Also a heat gun to blow wet wires etc
Not sure if teflon is needed for those threads - anyone know?
Very helpful video
I fill my dishwasher but nothing, does that trick work in any model?
Did you fill your dishwasher with water? If you did and it worked, then it would be the inlet valve. If not then it’s not the inlet valve.
Hollie Billings it didn’t, I guess not getting a valve anymore , thanks.
Hollie Billings I’m thinking the inlet valve failed first and the lack of water damaged the circulation pump...for it won’t fill and your trick doesn’t get it running. Maybe the pump got some debris, I’m exploring tomorrow , today is watching more videos and make a plan.
Did you check the float? And the water line? Maybe clogged?
Hollie Billings yes float seems ok ,
😍
Do all dishwashers have a float I don’t see anything in mine that looks like yours 🤦🏼♀️
I would think so, but maybe it’s in a different location?
You hand her a glass?
this goes to show you, if you have the deterination to fix it yourself, you can;) eventually;)
Yes! You’re right.
Sounds ridiculous to say just hit it and see if it works but there was a GE video saying that’s what to do
See below
Unloosen would be tightening.
I know it sounds like that but If you look up unloosen or google it, ….it actually means to make something loose, or to untie.
Never mind the dishwasher! Where do I get a woman like that?!
easy now
Do not have a float
Heck you don’t need a man! 😂. You can handle anything. lol
marry me
Good job
