Why are FPS games never balanced?

  • Feels like every FPS game you play, you either feel it's poorly balanced or everyone comments about how poor the balance is. Is this a new trend? did things back in the day play more fair or are we all just too knowledgeable to let it slide? or maybe we are too dumb...

    Quake Live is a pretty darn balanced game. 1v1 duel is probably my fav fps game mode in history.
    In my opinion, Imbalanced games seem prevalent nowadays because most people don’t actually want a ‘true’ balanced experience. They want wildly varied play styles to coexist in the same space. Those things are pretty much direct conflicts with each other.
    People who want true balance are going to play something like chess…. Or quake duel. :)

      Quake Live is only balanced because it is an equal starts game with pickups at set locations on the map. Even still though many arena FPS run into issues with snowballing and having the vast majority of maps have uneven spawns where 1 starting point is clearly better than another due to proximity to certain powerups or power positions.
      True balance isn't possible and tbh it isn't even desirable for many. Even chess isn't balanced because someone has to go first.

    Not only is double duelist very popular in valorant currently, but most swift plays and unrated games that I play have at least 3 duelists or initiators, sometimes even a full team. Also team wraith main 😂

    The over reliance of having automatic weapons as the baseline for every play style as a need to cater to most fps game players forces unsatisfying “balance”, and it makes other archetypes to be a frustratingly exaggerated version of themselves.
    Grenade launchers need their pills to detonate on impact to keep up with ARs, shotguns need to be a confetti cannon at range to balance out their easy close ranged one shots. It’s all gotten too consistent. And low TTKs just facilitate that even more with other weapons needing to land every shot to stand a reliable chance.
    I might just be jaded, but I think shooters like quake and team fortress have a happy relationship with most major weapon archetypes. Lower TTKs makes more room for expression and more engaging fights instead of bobbing around cover while beaming people down from a power position.

    Because of RUclips and the amount of tryhards looking up the best loadout every day… people have just become so sweaty and only care about winning instead of having fun

      This is simply not true, and a dumb statement that many people make today. People have for ever tried to be the best at something, and people naturally try to be the number 1 and to win.
      RUclips is not the reason a meta will exist. Hell, games had metas before the internet existed. Even chess has always had a meta, and that game has been around for more than a thousand years.
      Generally, the people that stick with a game the longest, are the people that want to win the most, and for them the fundamental part of "fun" is winning.

      @@eggbro for me having fun in games like older cod was running around with tomahawks and crossbow or in the finals I just use everything cause all the classes can be fun… people forget to have fun and just complain when their teammates are not using meta

    Why I adore Helldivers 2 because off-meta is still viable. Strongest case is Rainbow Six was basically destroyed by trying to make it as clinically balanced when it's a tactical shooter that's supposed to have advantages/disadvantages, bottle necks, etc.
    That video about how sniper rifles are the bane of game designers comes to mind lol.

    And that's why CoD4 and BBC2 will always be in my heart. They were balanced. IMO, at least. I know you disagree with me on CoD4. Haha. Anyway, never once in those games I died and thought "Damn you for using that broken weapon!". In Heroes & Generals there were quite a few broken weapons, but given how the game was and my high level of skills compared to the players in general on the enemy team, I could easily overcome them, steal their OP weapons when I felt like having it easy and use against them; so in the end it was a good experience.
    I found it interesting that you said Populatirity as an aspect of balancing. Sadly, but funny in a way, we Hunt players are more familiar with it than others, thanks to that Dennis idiot who nerfed the Uppercut, which was not at all OP, just because most players were using it. Well, gee, who would've thought that players would want to play with a single action revolver in an old west game?! LOL. That idiot just wanted to force his stupid metas onto others. Now everybody just play with semiauto pistols. Might as well be CoD with 1911 skins.

    There is no game that is truly balanced because true balance is not desirable. RTS communities understand this, fighting game communities get it, but FPS communities continue to be delusional about this fact.

    bro just make the weapons have good damage at any range except the shotguns obviously, so everything is not based on aping each other there you go easy solution to the problem. of course Very The Recoil depending on the weapon but God make the fucking range good because all the weapons are basically shotguns right now but make them controllable unlike the Lewis gun/lmgs right now.

    Casuals are the biggest moneymakers for every and any gaming company. the game "must be balanced" to close the gap (as much as possible) between good players and casuals. This way casual don't come and leave to quickly when they are getting shat on by, let's say, the old school FCAR. This is dumb for us good players with good KDs but from a company perspective its a good idea because they dont have casual come and try to play but leave forever because its too sweaty and they are getting out-shot by all the vets. The one change I never wanted to see away was the nukes. It goes without saying it was WAYYY too OP in its original state, AND after it got "nerfed", but it should have been just dialed down a bit more. Drop total C4s to one, and make the damage for the tank WITH the C4 on it something like 140 (like how the RPG is right now, or fk it 100). That mechanic was extremely fun. But the idiots working at these companies think nerfing stuff down to the ground (or in this case, removing a WHOLE mechanic) is the better thing to do?????). idk man its as if those people working are not true gamers. they enjoy games, but arent gamers that grind day in n day out like some of us.

    Aside from a true in-depth video on FPS balance, gotta love to see it.
