Autistic extrovert here, and those little stranger interactions are actually SO important for me! They are so much less stressful than an interaction with people I consider acquaintances, coworkers, etc.
I'm autistic and I actually like trying to compliment strangers on things because I see how happy it makes them and it makes me happy too. I'm not so great at other forms of small talk though 😅
I always appreciate the new ideas for tiny and rewarding habits. Whenever I leave the house for work, I always take a second to look in the mirror and say: today is going to be a great day and smile at myself. The days when it feels forced have become more and more scarce. ❤️
i agree with others... small talk (think parties) very draining v. chit-chat (easy-peasy, nothing at stake, short snippets and ichit-chat is easy to escape if things get awkward...
I often chat to strangers. Not just my work in retail but mon was a chat with someone on the bus, today chatting to someone whilst I waited for my hubby to pick me up after my eye test. Ages ago I would pop to the local cafe and sit on the big table and sit and chat with the old guys. I do early early starts anymore to do this much these days but I’m still in contact with one of those guys. Me and hubby have become friends with him x
Autistic girly here, firstly--thanks for making me feel seen! So whether I want to have a chat depends on what the subject is. For instance, if its small talk about something I'm not interested in, I really hate it. If its small talk about one of my interests then I find it really nice! I also prefer to be the one who initiates it, but im trying to work on that.
These are amazing! So funny I’ve literally put a ten minute timer on today before using social media and then I’ve put on your video! I LOVE the loving meditation at red lights so cool!! xx 🇵🇸♥️🧿🍉🏳️⚧️🇸🇩🏳️🌈🇮🇪
One habit that i've developed is to, whenever i'm driving on the car (expecially for a longer period) i see it as self-care and self-attention time and i start talking to myself, asking myself how i'm doing, how i'm feeling that day or talking about what has been going on recently, as you would do with a friend 😆 i love doing it, as a person whose main love language is quality time and it always makes my mood better 🥰
Thanks for these tips! Also, I'm obsessed with your calm, neutral decor ... I need one of those sheer blinds for my window to hide the fence and brick wall I look out onto.
I'm autistic and I actually really love to have small interactions with stangers. I had to learn how to do them but once I did I really enjoy them. I feel happier and safer when I have them. I love these ideas! I am curious - you mentioned at least two practices that are from Buddhism without mentioning it (loving-kindness, dedication of merits). I definitely think the world would be a better place with more people doing these practices. I guess is there a fear that mentioning where these practices come from it would turn people off from them? And just as a tip to people who are already doing them; doing them for health and wellbeing can be a good reason to start doing them but eventually you'll hit a cap because focusing on the emotional shift that can happen with them can undermine other parts that are keep to the practice like non-attachment. One great way to get over the hump is to do the practice because it benefits others, that can help loosen that attachment to outcome and can get rid of that cap. This is part of why mentioning these practices without the frame of Buddhism has always kind of confused me because without an understanding of why they're recommended and what the foundation for them are, people can get discouraged easily. Regardless, love this video and the 5 minutes of movement per hour info was new to me and I'll definitely be trying to include it.
Okay I love that - I feel like I get confused re small talk / these little incidental interactions - I know people with autism talk about not liking small talk, but those interactions feel a little different! Not quite small talk. Ooh I actually don't even think about Buddhism when it comes to those practices - definitely not an intentional avoidance of the word. I would say that unintentionally, it does allow people who are uninterested in Buddhism / switch off at the mention of anything slightly "woo" - to feel more open to the ideas?
