Picts and Hermits (Wemyss Caves, Fife) - Series 12, Episode 8
Tim Taylor looks back at an unusual episode of Time Team in search of the Picts in the caves of Wemyss, Scotland. It's literally a race against the tide, before remaining evidence is lost forever due to gradual coastal erosion.

One of my favorite episodes. What has happened since? Did anyone dig deeper in Phil’s cave? Did the sea claim more? Follow up would be a wonderful addition to these look backs. Please everyone who loves these shows. Please support the new Time Team thru Patreon ☮️💟

Question 1. what gives you the idea that the pool was used to bathe in ? I would have assumed from the name 'well cave' ,that with sea water so close , that fresh rock-filtered water would have been far more important for drinking and as such no-one would have bathed in it. The 'step' would have possibly been used to be able to reach the fresh water easier. Just a thought given that piped water didn't exist then and fresh clean water was an essential commodity.
Question 2. If I was living in a cave , I would not have wanted old smelly bones around. what dates are given for the bones found inside the caves ? could the bones have been thrown into the caves as rubbish ?ie midden ? during an unoccupied period ?
    Fascinating as always.🤔🤔🤯🤯🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

This episode aired in 2005, originally. While Time Team definitely debunked some long held views on ancient living and technology, there are also some episodes that I’ve immediately recognized as having a few incorrect conclusions, as a Native American. That said, even in 2005, there weren’t a lot of cave dwelling descendants left (I’m particularly thinking of the Proudfoot, in Kentucky), and it may not have occurred to them to even seek out or interview those with oral history knowledge that could give a window into interpretation.
      Great questions, John.

Loved the episode, the subject, and Tim’s commentary!
As I watched I kept wishing I could see an animation of the various archeological layers as they were deposited over all the years.
That last bit… the older surface with the plow marks was awesome!
Thank you all so much for bringing time team back!
I wonder what lies beneath the floor
