Century Viking pirates sailed up a muddy Essex creek. Legend has it they captured a lonely nun who when offered her modesty or her mortality, chose to die. The nun then carried her severed head up the hill to her church where she collapsed. Where she lay a spring bubbled up. The nun was St Osyth, the wife of the Saxon King of Essex, who chose the veil rather than consummating her marriage. The site of her death became a shrine and a busy settlement grew up. In the 12th Century Richard de Belmais, Bishop of London, founded a large Augustinian Priory in the middle of the village. This became a powerful establishment, which by the Dissolution in 1539 was one of the wealthiest Augustinian Monasteries in Europe. A few years ago a local boatbuilder noticed some decayed timbers sticking out of the mud in St Osyth Creek. The tides gradually revealed more of these timbers, which are on a significant bend in the channel. These timbers could be the remains of a medieval wharf which served the town in its early days, but they could also be the key to a much bigger mystery.
The present town seems to date to the 15th century but the famous Priory is much older. There must have been a busy settlement servicing it - so where was the original town of St Osyth? Time Team have three days to redraw the map of this picturesque town on the Essex coast.

I have fond memories of St Osyth, we took our young children there and parked up ready to walk and maybe do some bird spotting. Unfortunately the tide came in and stranded us and our car on. Sandbank! The water came up the side of the car just at the point where it would flow into the car. We stood and watched until luckily the water receded to the point where we could drive away. We were really worried but the kids thought it was great!

But that's my objection to TR - the lack of respect. I do wish another presenter - preferably one with an enquiring personality (rather than a confrontational one) had led the way: he appears to have been scripted to ask the "dumb questions", but the constant "why are we digging here not there like you said yesterday?" is unhelpful. We accept it's all exploratory - these digs can take years - so forget the "we've got to prove it and we've only got 3 days!" Jeopardy and focus on what can be done. He's better in some than others, but for me an historian would have been more in keeping. Or Guy, perhaps?

Plus all the younger, many unsung, diggers without whom there would have been no time team as they did all the most boring stuff like most of the dighing, washing finds etc. And lets not forget the wonderful drawings of Victor Ambrose. I watched these from the start way back when I was also young and when some of the later regulars were still students.

Seeing Phil heave a spade-full of mucky goo onto his tailing repository reminded me of a scene in a Monty Python movie when a pair of Serf's are foraging on their hands and knees near a path and one says "oo look, oi found some lovely muck here oi 'ave".
Phil is such a charming, mischievous character and I generally enjoy his shenanigans.

66k subs? Cant be completely right, surely millions of people likes this show. Or maybe many do not know about the possible revival of the show and this YT channel due to the "long" break. Spread the word about this channel and work that is in progress to start making new episodes of Time Team, the show we all love :) Oh, and go become a patron.

Any idea if this channel is licensing old Time Team episodes, or are they pirating content?
The archaeologists obviously aren't getting a cut of the money going to Patreon, so I'm not inclined to throw money at someone who just posts episodes at no cost to themselves.

      Good to know.
That gives me something to work with.
As soon as I can personally confirm that, I'll make sure to compensate him for putting his show on a platform I have access to.
Cable TV got so ridiculous that I haven't owned one in about 15 years.
Not to say that RUclips isn't close to that, but there are alternative methods to watch the videos uploaded here.

In the very early days of Time Team they used to end Day 3 with the Team presenting their findings to the local community whose gardens they had been digging up and Mick would talk them through the history of their town or village based on the evidence that had been found. Surely this was a great opportunity for that kind of ending, given the guy who brought them in the examine the quayside wood and the vicar with his finds in the churchyard.

I love this sort of Time Team, I love them all to be fair, but this one really was good as it brought so much investigation from different areas in to it to piece it together.... hearing them say that dock was wiped out somewhere between 1650 and 1700, and then to find in 1673 a massive tidal surge went through the area, really brought the history alive somewhat. Brilliant stuff.
