This song is a potential dark horse at Eurovision. It's so different and it's such a vibe. I really like the instrumentation and their voices. Iceland is great this year and I think they will definitely qualify 🇮🇸
Iceland just dethroned Ukraine for my top spot. The performance absolutely captivated me and they must be in the final. Gorgeous selection from the land of ice and fire. ❤️
(My bad English translation) At the root of where the silent soul breaks (as if it were a wave breaking e.g. surf) Heavy labour filled with grief A need that attracts, burns Lies hidden - a secret - hush hush With each bread of dawn one can see The beauty of freedom come closer Even though the sun sets again And unsaid words make the mind suffer - hush hush (Chorus) In a dark winter the sun rises Melts the heart's icy shackles - so warm In a dark winter - the gentle spring Brings warmth to your wings (or wingspan) once again The shadows of the short day approach Become more bearable with each breath A little song singing from within (from the chest/heart) Spreads and sighs - hush hush (Chorus) In a dark winter... And she takes flight Soars to highest heights And moves closer to Finding inner piece (Chorus) In a dark winter... ------------------------------------------------ It's a song about hope. In Iceland days (where the sun is up) are very short during the winters and very long during the summer, this makes the winter hard to bear. But there is light at the end of the tunnel because at the peak of the misery, the day starts to grow longer as spring approaches. This is very relevant to the bad things happening as of late. It is a song to all who suffer, a reminder of good times after the bad, a reminder of hope.
'Systur' kind of gives that away. Icelandic and English share a lot of words, some words are exactly the same, but a lot of them are very similar, almost closer than French phonically. 'Systur' is obviously 'Sister'...
This is a dangerous sleeper for Eurovision. In that 1st semifinal, it has a very different vibe than most songs & with a beautiful staging, it could stand out & do some damage.
The father of the three sisters performing so beautifully is Eythor Gunnarsson, a member of the Icelandic group Mezzoforte. Look up Mezzoforte's "Garden Party", maybe you'll remember :)
To be honest as an icelandic person I feel this is more in the indie category than country but love it no less (huge country fan btw 😅) but if you liked this you should check out their uncle KK highly recommend 😊
I was very upset seeing this win over the daughters of Reykjavík but tbh, this has a vibe and is beautiful. its not high in my top but i appreciate the vibe.
Thanks for your kind perspective! All four of them are siblings, their parents are famous musicians in Iceland and the song's composer is Lay Low, who's also a popular singer/songwriter in Iceland.
"Með hækkandi sól" means "with rising sun". You would pronounce it: Meth high-can-di soul. It's beautiful lyrics, about how winters are long and dark in Iceland, and how hard that time was in the old days. How people longed for the rising sun, and how much hope followed. The songwriter did not expect to win at all, she just wanted to send in a song. So she was very shocked and unprepared for this win. She is an amazing artist, you should look her up. Lovísa Elísabet Sigrúnardóttir, artist name Lay Low. Hope you like the Icelandic song, but if not, that's fine. Icelandic nation chose it anyways because we love it 😊 One good thing about Icelanders is their stubbornness. Even though the world loved Daði performance last year, we don't need to live on old flames and do simular things again. Those three women and the drummer are all siblings. Their mother, Ellen Kristjánsdóttir, is also amazing singer. Recommend her song, When I think of angles. A song about Ellen brother, who passed away. Best regards from Iceland 🇮🇸
It's more like Americana or Folk rather than Country. Lay Low, the songwriter performs Folk and blues and also reminds a little bit to Of Monsters And Men.
It's like Latvia 2019. That Night - Caroussel was a beautiful masterpiece. It unfortunately did not do well in ESC. But now it's one of the most-listened 2019's ESC song. Iceland's entry this year is a masterpiece, and I hope they will do well, because they deserve it ! (And it will be a revenge to Latvia 2019 too)
I wish last year's band represented Iceland. I never had a chance to see them on stage. Pandemic in 2020 2021 grandpa They got corona so we couldn't watch it
People keep calling this country, but I don't think that actually describes the genre here. Is it just because one of them was wearing a cowboy hat? Because it sounds more like soft rock than country to me.
it is folk, not country. I love icelandic folk very much and I was introduced to it in a spotify playlist when i was 12...OMAM's dirty paws and hymanalaya's entire discography are just some examples. I do not know any much after that as I'm not a native, but it is said to be a prominent music style in the country.
You are an english girl and You understand this langueage??? Than also my respect to You!!! I´m a German, and I can´t speak and write in English!! And the most scarry Sprache ist definitiv IsländiscH!!!!
I like this song but reykjavikurdætur should’ve won though😭 they won the televotes and the jury votes in the grand final but when it came to the top 2 songs to compete for the win they lost because the voting system crashed for them and a lot of people couldn’t vote and just gave up voting at the end, also people just assumed it was an obvious win so they didnt even bother to. Such an unfair win tbh
@@kolbrunbjorg6559 Yeah it's more the fact that all the people that disliked Reykjavikurdætur made sure to vote for Systur on the superfinal so they wouldn't go through. Don't get me wrong, I like both songs in their own way.
@@kolbrunbjorg6559 I mean I saw they stated that, but I tried to vote in the superfinals (I did not vote in the regular finals) and none of my votes went through. Reykjavíkurdætur had 26k votes in the regular finals and 23k in the superfinals. Total amount of votes in the regular finals was 77k and total amount in the superfinals was 56k. How would their total go down in the superfinals if the system was working perfectly fine? And why did the votes drop this much in the superfinals? For comparison, when Hatari won, the total amount of votes in the regular finals was 102k and in the superfinals there were 114k votes. Hatari got 45k votes in the regular finals and 62k in the superfinals. The superfinal vote total went up, and the total amount of votes was significantly higher than now in 2022. Friðrik Ómar, who placed 2nd, got 21k votes in the regular finals and 52k votes in the superfinals. Votes simply do not go down in the superfinals if things are working correctly. The only reason this didn't become an actual ordeal is because after the fact there was nothing that could realistically be done about it and I don't think Reykjavíkurdætur wanted to take away from Sigga, Beta and Elín by making it a bigger deal.

definitely. I really hope they will qualify

My third favorite this year. Gosh, these harmonies are just WOOOOW. The best ballad by far this year
(My bad English translation)
At the root of where the silent soul breaks (as if it were a wave breaking e.g. surf)
Heavy labour filled with grief
A need that attracts, burns
Lies hidden - a secret
- hush hush
With each bread of dawn one can see
The beauty of freedom come closer
Even though the sun sets again
And unsaid words make the mind suffer
- hush hush
(Chorus)
In a dark winter the sun rises
Melts the heart's icy shackles - so warm
In a dark winter - the gentle spring
Brings warmth to your wings (or wingspan) once again
The shadows of the short day approach
Become more bearable with each breath
A little song singing from within (from the chest/heart)
Spreads and sighs
- hush hush
(Chorus)
In a dark winter...
And she takes flight
Soars to highest heights
And moves closer to
Finding inner piece
(Chorus)
In a dark winter...

This song has grown on me sooooo much, amazing choice this year Iceland 🇮🇸
one of my favourites, the performance is hypnotic and so pleasant, watch out with them
Iceland is my winner for this year! ❤️ Is really time for a win for them they put so much effort in it ❤️❤️❤️
Fun fact : The 3 of them (even the drummer) are actually siblings
The drummer also?? Wooow that's perfect 😯😄

@@RoxanneLavender Sisters* actually. Sister would be ,,Systir''.
I knew that because im from iceland

Honestly, this song is really beautiful. I'm sure that their live performance at ESC will be amazing

"wow"
yes indeed. terrific entry.
Its beautiful song! I have Iceland in my top 10, looooove this
Gogogo Iceland!

I love this song. Good luck.
With ❤ from Portugal 🇵🇹
We need your country and Iceland in the final! #GenreDiversity ;)

i love it so much hope they win
It’s so different!! I will vote it.. lots of songs in Eurovision are either too similar to each other, or similar to the previous famous songs

Yes that's very Of Monsters And Men I'm so glad they finally go for something like this !!!
Grand final worthy maybe top 5 worthy
I'm not a fan of Country either. But as a lover of Folk, I enjoy music like this which is only borderline Country. I would still label this as Folk
You are so beautiful Noosh,🇵🇹🇵🇹❤️❤️❤️😘
Thank you. (Þakka þér fyrir) :-)
I love this song :) its my no 1 this year, but I feel like it wont do well.
I don’t think it will do well cos it’s not really best suited to Eurovision I don’t think

Brilliant

When I listen to it when they published the songs, I thought folk song like something to sing around a bunfire 😁
Go see Israel revamp! It’s amazing🤩

Country is not "normal" (or popular) in Iceland - thankfully ;)

Girl, you should check the Icelandic Eurovision song from 2006. That’s crazy, but it’s not country though
If this song isn't the winner, I'm going to be sorely disappointed.
Yeah your coughing in the mic and dropping stuff during the performance was highly appreciated. Quality content.
Where in America are you living now?
This is oddly similar to "My Silver Lining" from First Aid Kit... 🤨
Yeah, both are typical Folk songs which is "oddly similar" to Folk music that has come before them... I love both of them tho :)
It’s pleasant and I enjoy the relaxing feel but I’d be surprised if it qualified since it seems a bit weak from r a Eurovision entry
You can do israel I.m revamp pls??
I get quite disappointed when people mix country and folk together.
Do Israel revamp

I don’t think it’ll qualify, not a bad song though, although a bit anemic
Not very bad but not very good either... Sorry Iceland...
The melody is quite nice...but overall it is somehow annoying 😔...I am trying to like it but for me there is nothing special here
Daughters of Reykjavik robbed!
"I normally don’t like country this much" because it isn’t country...
