Can someone explain the lingo here to me? I've only recently gotten into these kinds of videos and started playing melee again. Specifically, "upsets" and "taking the set" and "taking a game off of someone" (assuming the last two aren't the same thing).
@@hypnotoad28 I'm new to the community too but I know an upset is when someone wins against an opponent that is considered to be a lot better; a set is usually best 2 out of 3 or best 3 out of 5 and taking the set would be if you win that series. Taking a game is just winning one match but still losing the overall set (If you win the first game but then lose the next two in the best 2 out of 3 series, you would have taken a game but lost the set) Hopefully this made sense :)

this folk tale needs to be squashed a bit imo. i've been following isai since 2008 through his youtube vids and am a 64 player, and while isai was undeniably the best in the world at one point, people (the meta) have surpassed him in terms of pure technical skill, or they just play smarter/safer (he takes a lot of risks, whether it's for fun or because he is adapting) and beat him. even when he makes it to semi's or finals, it's almost always through loser's bracket. if u watch him play the top dogs from japan in this year's footage for SSC, u can tell he is trying his best due to the respect he has for japanese ppl. so unfortunately, isai has been outclassed at both games. :( i also think he lacks practice/preparation. the guy only attends a select few tournies per year - u rarely see him around unless it's local-ish or there's a shitload of japanese ppl competing. however, if we're talking about pure mastery of every single character in the game (64) and the ability to produce upsets with shit characters just like the ones in this video, then isai is definitely still in a league of his own and untouchable (for now).
These guys are doing some really interesting things with these "low tier" characters. Remember that JP was "low tier" until Hbox mastered her. Sometimes I wonder if it's just a matter of someone coming along with enough determination to turn one or some of these characters into a great. I would definitely love to watch more Melee with other characters besides just the top tiers.

Multiple tournaments allowed it, they allowed it the same way we allow stadium. They allowed it since everything is on a set cycle and they needed stages, same thing for when pokefloats was legal, but that was only banned cause the most optimal way to play on that stage is circle camping
Fun fact: the current stage rules were born in Brazil, where tournaments had the "Mixed" ruleset, trying to get the best of both the US and JP worlds at the time. This was later followed by the rest of the world, probably thinking much of the same. I still think it should only be BF and FD, though, to have only true neutral stages. But oh well, unpopular opinion.

Jiggs wasn't considered super low tier at that time because mango had already made her jump up in the tier list but hbox certainly helped.
Puff was literally never considered low tier, and Hbox didn't even define her playstyle.
