- Brian Boitano explores the cuisine of northern Italy and prepares a feast for his friends and family at his new home in Favale di Malvaro, Italy, the town where all the Boitanos originated.

This made me want to move to Italy and buy a homestead....and cook all those wonderful dishes!
Those "brown crunchy bits" are called fond. There is nothing more rewarding than cooking for the people you love. Enjoy it while you can. I cooked for my dad every day for 15 years while we took care of one another. I was lucky enough to be his arms and legs but he was my strength.
I loved watching Brian with his Italian farmhouse renovation, visiting with his family, and learning to cook some of their recipes.
This video and series has been popular for 5 years, why? because Brian lays down the principles of a happy life first hand, understanding your roots, understanding the simple pleasures in life, and good food and good wine.
It's so nice to see Brian looking so serene. He used to seem so stressed in his competitive days. It's a blessing to see him so calm and happy :)

Halfway of this video I was crying already, because family is the only way you can rely on whatever heritage and treasures(not money) they carry the history. And never underestimate your roots. Just lovely...ciao
as far as my genetics and family history show, there's not a drop of Italian in me. BUt when I was stationed in Napoli for 4 years [lucky me, I got to watch Maradona play for 4 years at the height of his career], it was clear I had found my people. SUch a 100% difference from the phony, cold people I grew up with in Mormon-dominatd Utah. When I was preparing to ship back to the states at the end of my time, many of my dear Napoletano friends were all but crying LOL

I remember him in his prime days as an elite skater--really one of those performers who made the art of figure skating blip in my radar. I'm so glad that he is out and living a true, authentic life.
I just finished watching who gets the gold in,women's figure skating and looked up to see what BB was up to. Found this video after seeing he wrote a recipe book, saw what would Brian do everywhere and here I am watching this wonderful story. It is by far thee best cooking host I ever saw. He wins the gold on being a natural talent in this field. My hats off to him. OX

Last week I made the Shrimp Scampi with the mashed garbonzos,...…….really good! Today I made just the Scampi sauce and added a white flour rue to thicken it. Used it over pasta with braised shrimp. Served the same white wine I used in the sauce. This is so fricking good I can't believe I made it myself. Thanks!

Wonder if he still vacations in that village, since he came out gay. They seem very traditional, but who knows? They need people to come and renovate the old homes, but they want families , bc Italy has a lower birth rate than the US. I think it's more like Japan's, in fact it's currently lower.

I think we can almost smell the adventurous kitchen and feel the evening air out on the terrace as the food comes, and hear the laughter and happy conversation. There is something so very enduring about shared food, lovingly prepared.

In my younger days I lived for a few years in Genoa, 30 years later I am still convinced that Ligurian food is the best Italy has to offer, I loved the 'cucina povera' style and flavours.
Renata you are right. I was born in Genova and now live in Milan, but I also think that food from Liguria is the best. But it is not well known in other parts of Italy.

I am so happy for you. To find your family village, on top of that beautiful mountain, with waterfall is a dream come true. Right down to the white peach cobbler. Also I would check under those chestnut trees for truffles, a favored habitat. The most important thing by far is the family you found, big family gatherings are to be treasured.

Nice documentary, great food starts with great ingredients. I particularly liked how most of the ingredients used fresh farm vegetables and the meats and wine were also sourced in the community too.

Love Italy and their wonderful food and beautiful land ! Been there to visit 50 years ago but still remember .... My Favorite country after USA and I am not Italian But I ended up eating Italian food because it is so delicious and Healthy I went swimming there...The Italian Riviera !!

Italians excel in just about everything...an easy flair...geniuses in design...on a level far above the rest of the world, even countries that imagine themselves progressive and evolved.
MY favorite cultures are Italian and Japanese. Very different, but equally into high quality, setting high standards. Main difference, Italians are more relaxed, while Japanese are high strung. Japanese often want to do things better, but they also enjoy tradition.

Really enjoyed this video. My cousin's husband is from Favale Di Malvero and I was there this past August. My maternal grandfather is from Neirone which is 19 KM away from Favale di Malvero. I know those mountains well !!!
