    Thanks for this. Useful explanation between HSB and HSL. I'm still not sure though how the B/W adjustment layer works? I thought it too was based on human perception (HSB) but it shows a different result to reducing the saturation slider in a Vibrance adjustment layer?

  • @LangleyNA

    Folks should be aware these settings do not exclusively affect saturation values. They also affect hue and luminosity. With photorealistic content, maybe that is okay, but with line art/animation content, it may be more desirable to create a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer and adjust specifically one setting (Hue, Saturation or Brightness), and then configure the layer blending for this adjustment layer to be that of whichever setting you adjusted.

    • @LangleyNA
      @LangleyNA 4 года назад

      For instance, a vibrance slider almost always lowers/darkens the luminosity values for the targeted pixels. And a saturation adjustment to a low saturation pixel tends to increase the luminosity. These are common and don't tend to be desirable if the image manipulation work you are doing is meant to be absolute. I _only_ want to target the absolute saturation or the absolute hue, but Adobe Photoshop and GIMP almost always adjust additional pixel values beyond just what you intend.
      And so I feel these things to be misleading. "Saturation" is not exclusively "saturation" in these image manipulation programs.

      Vibrance adjustment would probably give you the best results. But the Black and White Adjustment will give you more control because you can adjust the brightness of each color individually.

    • @PhotoshopTrainingChannel
      @PhotoshopTrainingChannel  4 года назад +2

      In most cases, you will use Vibrance to boost the intensity of colors in an image. But in some cases, if vibrance doesn't get you what you need you can then add a bit of saturation. If you are painting or drawing in Ps then Saturation might be the better choice.

    Hi Jesus
    I like your videos, and your work needs to be supported.
    Once said that, let me give my opinion about the last part of the video when you describe the 2 different Saturation sliders:
    On Hue/Sat, the Saturation refers to HSB, and on Vib/Sat, the Saturation slider refers to HSL
    I agree they are totally different, and I agree the second one (Vib/Sat) refers to what is perceived by the human eye/brain.
    I also agree the first (Vib/Sat) has a reference on top of HSL, particularly on Lightness channel interpretation.
    However, I disagree the second one refers to HSB.
    It is easy to see that if we use the HSB/HSL plugin and check the Brightness channel of the vertical bar of Hues. The brightness is all the same, and there is no "human perceived brightness" in there at all.
    When it calls anything about the standardization of what is "perceived" by the human eye/brain, it results from the CIE commission when the science created the CIE Lab profile. L channel is the resulted standardization on how the humans perceived the lightness of each individual color: Perceptual Lightness
    So, in my humble opinion, the 2 sliders of Vibrance/Saturation are based on the Perceived Lightness of the standard CIE Lab.
    Despite that, I think Adobe misses a clarification about what tools are based on Perceived brightness and not perceived (HSB/HSL)
