These engines are pure gems and bombproof all they need is a good service and a overhaul and it will be back as happy as Larry great works guys, brilliant machine
These were very well built engines , they last for ever no matter it seems what you do to them. P.S if the compressor works don;t kill it they are very useful.
well built? absolutely not, they run good cause they done have headgaskets and the bottom end is oversized, just like every other old diesel engine pre 1970, detroits are nothing special
They do that to clear it up so it idles better because its been sitting for years. Also most of these videos they will never use the engine for anything afterwards so warming it up isn’t necessary.
I like how you give your son access to your work experience. He's at an age where he's learning rapidly. I bet he will become a whiz with Machinery when he gets older.
I remember the last tank of high sulphur diesel I ever bought, in 2007. Found it in Ohio some 7 hours from home. Put it in my ‘86 K5 Blazer with 6.5L diesel, that truck ran so good on the way back to PA. Miss the good stuff lol
The military put these in everything! 4-71 for small boats, forklifts and other equipment. The 6--71s were used in tanks, trucks buses, etc. The tanks and PT boats ran 2 6-71s. They went all the way to 16v 71 and the bigger newer brother 16v 92s are in heavy military trucks still.. You can find the 16v 71s in a lot of older gen-sets.
Diesel Creek would love to add this to his antique collection That Detroit runs smooth its worth saving. Don't forget to put the parts back you got in your pocket
It would be cool to save this engine and have this thing restored and preserved because it is just piece of marvelous historical machinery that shouldn't be lost.
Enjoyed the video, brings back a lot of old memories, worked on quite a few of these. They came out originally with the 4 53 and the v 6 53, later they brought the 71 series engines, thanks for sharing.
53 series were made in 2,3,4,6 cyl configs as best as I recall, ill need to go look up the wwII single cyl ship aux generator and if the 6 cyl were in V or inline but im thinking both and the 3cyl were available either turbo or non turbo.
I love watching these videos of these cars/trucks/engines that are left for dead....come to life. Makes me wonder why they were parked and never used again. If i didnt have any use for something, id give/sell it to someone who could use it. Id rather see it used than be put dormant. Thats why im trying to pretty much give away my 75 Fury. I have no use for it anymore, so i want someone that can use it to have it.
That engine looks like a Detroit 471, and with the cowling, it looks like it was designed for commercial stationary applications, although many of those were put in and used as marine (boats) power.
It is a 4-71, the giveaway for a 71 or 92 series engine are the big center bolts that hold the valve covers on. A 53 series has bolts around the perimeter of the valve cover.
@@DeathHead1358 there was never a inline 92 series, the only 92 series ever built are V engines. As for 53 series they use a single rectangular cover where the blowe would bolt on if it was installed on the opposite side. The valve cover bolts are not necessarily a way to identify them because late series 53 engines did have a central bolt valve cover similar to the 71 series but it did not have a thumb knob they only used a 3/8” 12 point wrench
I don’t know why you would want to blow it up it’s a great machine can’t kill them old GM engines plus air compressor works. I just like old equipment it runs forever and is built way better. Thanks for the video.
That unit has an SG Woodward hydraulic governor on it. What are you planning on doing. With the unit. If you are just going to trash it. I wouldn't put any money into it. If you want to make a good standby generator you have a really good start. Also if you some information on the woodward governor I be glad to help you out. I worked on them for 20 years. The SG stands for simple governor.
Back in the early 80s, my brother became friends with a guy in his diesel repair shop at NWTI in Green Bay Wisconsin. A few years earlier, his friends older brother was using a tractor with loader to move old concrete from behind their barn that they were adding onto. Their youngest brother who was 4 years old was riding on the tractor with him. It was lunch time so his mom asked his dad to let them know it was time to eat. When he came back into the house, all he said was; they're both dead. Stay safe my friend.
Your comment is kind of un due, it's G-d Who decides life and death, there is nothing man can do except repentance but at any case is a decree from heaven, don't make other factors the fault. Especially in the south where people are descendants of the ten lost tribes of Israel, if G-d forbids there is tragedy, its because of a grave sin, not because of a dad being with his son. I didn't know until a year or two ago that the tornadoes and the hurricanes and many tragedies occurr in the southern states and it's because the punishment for a christian is worse than of an ignorant sodomite in NY. Americans would do it well by returning to the law of Moses and leaving idol worship of a man, many are doing it already check tenakh talk and rabbi Tovia Singer
Of course you would pull the valve cover. Even questioning doing that makes me wonder what else you'd shortcut...Your remote starter wires are pretty light, you need thicker for those solenoids, they take a fair bit of current
it is a gm diesel 471 power unit U need 2 if fuel rack and if injectors are stuck the throttle might be stuck they will do that after setting a long time when U close the throttle off the engine should cut off at least it didn't take much 2 get it running and it engine runs good 😊😊 OMG 8 16 2O23

You can’t kill those old 2 cycle Detroit diesels. I have a 3 cylinder one on an old Bucyrus Erie Dinahoe 190 back hoe. It’s tired because you always have to start it with either. But once it’s running it still digs like a beast.
might need a check valve in the fuel line to keep fuel from running back to tank i had a 353 from a gama goat that thing would start if you looked at the starter
Yeah the series they put in everything! Pumps, trucks, buses, fire engines, tanks, you name it. But she has a hydraulic governor so not automotive set up. Detroit was king of off road not cat

So true, fuel mileage wasn't very good. I drove a 1966 GMC Crackerbox 6-71 238 horsepower, 5 and 2 and it got about 4 MPG at best.
