Brilliant. I was about to head off to the Stihl shop and get them to reload the line when I discovered this you tube vid. It works exactly as described. I no longer need to dread running out of line.
well, a couple words. You saved me a trip to the store and the dealer because i was about to go buy a new model head for mine. I tried your technique and it literally took me 30 seconds. I have spent hours of frustration trying to do this (3 years) and dreaded each time i had to change the trim wire. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
Steve I've had a Stihl FS40 for 5 years with this line head and I had no idea that it was this easy to reload. I was taking it apart to reload it this whole time and making things much more difficult for myself than it needed to be. Thanks for this tip!
I,m the wife of Derek... thanks for the great vids they make my life so much easier xx just mended my eater and put new line in it ... now if you can just get my hubby to do the job lol!!!
My dad recently passed away this year, he was the one who would usually show me stuff like this so it’s nice to know to, I’m use to the older style machines so this was very helpful. Thank you.
This worked beautifully with my Stihl grass trimmer. It was quick & easy. The owner's manual instructions were okay, but his explanation was much better.
Based on Stihl's wordless pictogram instructions, I never knew how to rethread the trimmer until I saw this trimmer. Thank you! I had thrown away and replaced two heads because I thought they'd gone bad, but it turns out they died in vain, innocent victims of Stihl's inadequate pictograms and my misunderstanding thereof. One trick is that you have to make sure the ends of the string have firmly lodged in the small holes on the spool for that purpose, which is the resistance Steve mentioned in the video. If they are loose, turning the wheel won't wind them. Took a couple of tries, but now it's fine.
DUDE!!! You are a literal lifesaver! I bought a used Stihl weedeater that had this same style head on it and absolutely hated re-stringing it until I saw your video. Now it's practically effortless to re-string it and it's my favorite! Thank you, thank you, and THANK YOU!!!!!
Thanks Steve, I had been looking all over the internet for what size line to use and couldn't figure it out. Appreciate the video, have a good day brother.
Thank you so much. For years i was taking the end off and painstakingly putting the trimming line on. it never worked right and when i wore the line down it would pull out for me and i would end up taking the end off and messing with it. it got to the point i wouldn't weed eat because it was such a pain in the ass. I looked at lots of videos but none had an end like mine so i just couldn't figure it out. Today i happened upon your video and it all made sense. I was able to load it fully in probably 2 minutes. never again will i do it wrong. i have a lot of weed eating to catch up on. Thank you so much.
Absolutely great video so well explained that anyone can do this. Excellent job Steve. Thanks for saving me a huge headache as I almost started taking it apart.
Steve - this video literally changed my life. For years I'd been pulling the linhead apart to load it (which is what the Stihl manual says). This was a religious experience.
BY FAR the EASIEST spool I have ever had to load for a trimmer. Why they discontinued is beyond me. This is how I do it too, but I cut the line into two section before winding, but I'm gonna try your way. I do seem to go through a lot of line . My property is 5000sqft say and I have to fill it three times. Im using the .80. Ive had my trimmer for l8 + years I would say. My only regret is that I got the bent shaft. I'm 6'1" with 30" inseam and strains my back because I have to bend forward. Thanks for all your videos. Very informative and helpful.
Hi Steve, Greetings from down under , thanks to your video I still have a FSE 71 trimmer, had loads of problem but thanks to you video all fixed now.rewinding is now like a piece of cake.
Great! I inherited two (!) Stihl misery whips with the summer house but never owned one before. Got them both up and running but lacked these details. Got to run over to your other vid now on how to load trimmer lines. to see what other nuggets I'm missing. You ARE the man! Thanks.
Steve I gave up on loading line on this trimmer, Manual is poorly written. So I watched you, you pushed new line in about an inch on both sides. I pushed in 10-12 inches on both sides before feeling resistance. Then it would not wind in from there. So thanks will try in morning. I am confident. This will be the fourth time that you have helped me with lawn equipment. Thanks very much. TOM of Tom and Donna
It's a very clear explanation, and thank you for that, but mine doesn't click and wind as smoothly. I can only get about half the line (using the two arm-lengths measure you suggest) wound, with a lot of difficulty, when it stops and simply won't turn. I am so finished with string trimmers.
Awesome info in this video. I actually just spoiled line head with .095. Was super tight but it’s what I had for my old unit and it worked. And you made it so much easier than anyone else I’ve watched. Thanks
Just as perfect a demo as one could do. I looked at it last year but forgot . Only had to do a refresher view. If I was not in Ireland I would buy you a beer.
A tip for everyone. If your line is rough at the top,it may be very difficult to insert the line into the hole. Use sand paper to sand the top of the line a little so it can fit in the hole easily.
i was doing this wrong for years, glad I came across your video, very easy to reload now and to get the line to come out you need the machine to be spinning very fast then clunk the head on the ground for a split second
…what can you say you ask…wait for it…”Steve out”. That’s so awesome. I’m old and have the old Stihl head but I’m retired so no harm. I have unlimited PTO a term from when I worked. Thanks man
Bravo! I almost bypassed this on my Google search results because it didn't have FSE60 in the title. So glad I linked. Thanks for a really clear video. Love your spooling trick of using just one piece, winding it, and then cutting it into two pieces at the end.
Thanks Steve. Had not used the trimmer in a while and forgot how it went back together. The only instructional video which demonstrates where the spring goes that I could find. Once I knew that it was a piece of cake. Thanks again.
WHY ON EARTH is this video not on the Stihl website as a link to make re-loading the trimmer head is beyond me... this is fantastic keep up the great work
Had a Stihl weed wacker I got running without outside assistance; spooling the effing thing is why I'm here! Someone, before me, had the spring in the wrong position. Thanks for your help. Edit: My 80 year old friend is the owner of the Stihl. He is thankful to both of us!!
Thankyou Steve, I just got a c5 s for ten cleaned carb runs perfect. Couldn’t figure out how to do the string. Thank you for this video, you made a piece of cake
Thank you so much this help me tremendously a lot I bought my first Stihl weedeater second hand I thought she wind it up the same way a older weed either does was super irritated because every time I did it wasn’t working right I logged onto RUclips seeing your video and it was step-by-step excellent thank you so much I truly appreciate your help and yes this was way easier
First I've found that showed mine, soooo many similar. I have found with this one that ANY instruction is a guideline only, and the manual is geared toward seeing how far you can chuck stuff. This one I have also seems to be a diva regarding wire feeding, she wants two pieces and the wire must be straight going in, no curl allowed. Go figure. You have a very straight forward method of teaching that I appreciate, Thank You.

stevee, your video gave me enough info to fix my electric stihl trimmer without going back to the store. for that i'm amazed, grateful and honored to call you my friend...
Great job once more Steve. I tried to put in the string but couldn't. I followed your instructions and was successful, and it took just two beers. I Have to say I've learned a lot from you. Thanks much. Much appreciated
I've worked with most of the larger Stihl strimmers and when confronted with this tiny little thing I was prepared to get my 5kg sledge to it as I couldn't figure out how to rewire it. This came up as the first result, watch video, fitted wire and the two guys with me said 'It can't be that easy!!!' so Thanks Steve.
You are now be best friend. I bought this weed eater to control the 'Back 40' (60 year old lady). My ex-son-in-law said he knew how to thread it. He also said it only was a single line. He would take the whole thing apart and thread it by hand. It was not until he was kicked out that I saw it was a 2 line. Thank you for showing me how to install the line.
I got to try it out today, I was waiting for the chance since when I saw this video when you posted it. The only problem was the knob would not rotate more than one click, thanks to your video we knew that wasn't right. I took it apart and found the coil spring had a sharp point on the end of it that was biting into the hub assembly and only allowing it to turn a click before jamming. I rounded off the end of the spring with my Dremel and it works perfectly.
I am retired and have been contemplating doing small engine repairs from my garage to keep me busy. I have learned a ton from your videos so far. Lots more to learn but thanks to your videos I can see light at the end of the tunnel. Thank you.
For the life of me I couldn't get this to work after I tried to change the string. Of course I took it apart - and put the spring on the wrong side. Works great now! Thanks for the video.
Thanks a lot. I have been struggling (and cursing) with mine for ten years and now i can not believe I was doing it totally wrong all this time. You are never too late to learn,Thanks from N Ireland
Thanks Steve I have this exact trimmer, I normally cut 2 lengths at 2 metres each. But your way is much easier, I shall be using your idea from now on. Cheers
Thank- you so much, I have the exact trimmer and your video and explanation was perfect. Easy to follow and easy to re-string the easy way. Cheers, this bud for you my man…
