IMO this is more fun and has more varied topics of discussion. Ramsey show can get fairly interesting because the callers do come up with some off-the-wall situations unique to their own lives, but usually it's just stuff like, "I'm $50,000 in debt because I bought a brand new car, what do I do?"

Not bad at all. These videos are more fun. George and Rachel's banter back and forth works so well! As far as the Ramsey videos, they are good too but more serious in nature. I only watch the Ramsey highlight videos... I pick and choose what interests me so I like them both equally. But it's not bad at all.

What if the laptop was a car and the roles were reversed. "I accidentally crashed my wife's car, and the repair is $600. That should come out of her fun money because it's her car, right?"
I don't understand why the wife won't own up to her mistake. If you damage someone's property, you don't just get to say you're in the clear because it was an accident. You have to pay for the damage. And since they are married, they both pay for the damage.

UGH Rachel is so wrong about the laptop. The issue is in part that the wife wasn't supposed to be in the office in the first place. "I have asked her multiple times to please leave my office alone." Which means she's been violating his wishes repeatedly. And when she does it again Rachel says "very nice". "That's a computer for the house" she says, as if she wasn't listening to herself read that it was his laptop, in his office, where she wasn't supposed to be. His only sin is not discussing the resolution before deciding on something on his own. But the resolution he chose sounds fair to me.

11:06 I wonder if Rachel's verdict would be different if she was disabled. For all of the Ramsey discussions encouraging generosity, I am shocked by her answer. Of course, take care of your household first. Of course, have the right motives. But what does God's Word say when we ignore those in need?
"If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? " James 2:15-16 ESV
"By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth." 1 John 3:16-18 ESV
Perhaps disabled people would not need the government if the church obeyed God's Word. The government has been picking up the church's slack like a second baby daddy for too long. Let's step up church!

The obligation present situation is so annoying. This past Christmas I got a group text about buying our grandma a new tv and sister asked everyone to pitch in. I never even responded. Grandma has a tv already and we don’t even watch tv so this isn’t a gift that I would feel is important. It was the same thing with an iPad with her the year before, I also did not contribute to that. She doesn’t even ask for these things, someone just comes up with the idea and insists we all chip in. They’ve never said about how they feel about me not chipping in but honestly I wouldn’t care even if they’re mad about it. We have financial goals of our own and those take priority.
My sister who is in debt wayyyy past her eye balls(200k plus) always chips in on this stuff and I’m think she’s crazy for it. Couldnt care less if I come off as a jerk.

no, you aren't a jerk. I invited one of my brothers out to an impromptu lunch with most of our family and he declined because he would be at work - i knew he would be at work and wouldn't be able to come, especially last minute for no good reason, but if he heard we all met up for lunch and no one bothered to invite him too, maybe he'd feel excluded. Maybe they are just trying to avoid causing any bad feelings that way. idk.

The birthday money situation is exactly why my husband and I have personal accounts for FUN spending. Because if they have 1 account then he feels entitled to the “household” having that money. I want to be Able to buy the things I want within reason with our feeling obligated to have “permission”

The man should have just been way more aloof about depositing the money. If he just acted like it was a matter of course like "hey, that seemed like way too much cash to just have sitting around," he might have been able to get away with it. The reactions from both parties seems to indicate deeper problems. But money is completely fungible, so she can just go withdraw it no harm no foul

Regarding the wife that was in her husband’s office when she shouldn’t have been and cleaned up when he takes care of his own room and she ended up breaking his computer. She definitely should have to pay for that. I think he went to easy on her.

Its insane to me they called computer guy the jerk. He set a clear boundary, using money they both agreed to, and she violated the boundary and destroyed crap! The only thing he did wrong was just "deciding" she pays without talking to her. They should have sat down together and she should have taken responsibility like an adult, and VOLUNTEERED to fix it. At that point he would probably meet her in the middle. Dont act like a child and you won't be treated like one, leave peoples stuff alone!

When married, since everything is combined, would you take out $300 from each person's fun money?

Agree with not tipping the ipad, but most take-out servers working at full-service restaurants are also making $2.13/hour and need to be tipped. 10% is appropriate.

I have an ethical question. In Canada, we child benefits (~$500/month) to help with the costs of raising kids. We have been saving this for our kids' education. When that is fully funded, should we continue to save it for them or do you think it's reasonable to use it for camps, daycare, activities, clothes, etc. So that we can put that extra cash towards our mortgage? I feel a bit like it's stealing from our kids to pay for our housing.... opinions???
Thanks for your podcast, I love it!!

    • @jenniferspeers6537
      @jenniferspeers6537 4 месяца назад

I'm in Canada too. My husband and I were just talking about this last night. Part of raising kids and making sure their needs are met and their standard of life is what we all want it to be- yes, spend it as you see fit! Extracurriculars, additional savings (like for a vacation even... that's an experience they benefit from too), mortgage is a-ok - they need housing!, car insurance - they need to get to school and soccer... It is to be spent how you see fit. Don't hold guilt about using it on groceries, they need to eat!
You can sort of think about it like child support. I'm not sure I know of anyone who receives child support and keeps it in a separate account to buy just diapers, just the kids school snacks, just the kids bath towels, just the kids hand soap and toothpaste ... they roll it into their entire budget and part of that money goes into food, shelter, clothing etc.
A recent Canada Life study found that while the majority of Canadians (92 per cent) are aware of Registered Education Savings Plans (RESPs), less than half (49 per cent) are currently using this savings tool. Additionally, a mere 17 per cent claim they're knowledgeable about the contribution limits and benefits they offer. Average monthly contribution amount is $210. We personally contribute less than that per child. I think you are doing great.

My thoughts on the laptop scenario. The "fun money" account should have been broke 50/50 ($300 each to replace laptop) and the husband should have communicated this plan before doing it. This would have hopefully alleviated some of the issues his decision may have caused. Hopefully if he did it this way, the wife would have been fine with it and understanding. Yes, it is frustrating on the husband's side - especially since he asks her NOT to do something (clean the office) but he shouldn't take it out on her financially - that's borderline abuse. He would be totally in the right to say something like, "I've asked you before not to clean my office, now we have a broken computer that we have to pay for and here's how we'll do it (50/50 from fun money."

The spilt couple have a very weird relationship. They have split spending accounts that neither have access to, they have split hobby rooms that neither are supposed to enter, and he wants to treat her like a child and punish his wife for accidentally breaking his screen while she was cleaning.... it's so weird. If my husband breaks something I can get upset, but WE pay for it out of our emergency fund or just pull it from whatever envelope it would fall under. Crazy.
