The parents at my child’s Catholic school complained to the administration that they were tired of their children selling things to raise funds. They said just ask us for the money we will give what we can give and 100% of the money will go to you not to some candy or wrapping paper company. The school now asks on the first day of the year for every family to commit to give what they can afford to the Annual Fund by the end of the year. ever since then they receive over 98% of participation in every grade and they receive more money than they ever did from candy sale, even if you only gave a dollar your kids name was right up there with the kids whose parents had given thousands 😄
Works at a private school, where parents pay tuition. Public schools all that does is make the divide poor and rich kids even more distinct.
I’ve always wanted to bypass the candy or donut sale and give the funds so 100% goes to the program doing the fundraising: sports or 4-H or whatever. But then I get the reminder that there is a contest to sell the most. Those fundraiser companies are taking too much off the top.

@@emmamerrick6458this one is hard. Vet bills can sometimes get out of hand. This can be a bit of a gray area I think. If the owners truly don't have the money maybe. If they do, I think they should pay. We paid for our golden retriever when we got cancer. It was $$$$. :(

For the "Not taking a raise" one. I work at a large corporation and I got a raise to $101K. This put me above the threshold for discounted benefits ($6000) and childcare reimbursement ($9000). Getting a $15000 benefits reduction for a $3000 pay raise was a pretty hard pill to swallow.

That has nothing to do with not wanting the raise because of taxes
Thirty years ago my daughter needed foods stamps for three months to afford food for herself and her daughter. I had no money to donate as I was taking care of My dying mother. I went with her to apply. She was so ashamed she was sobbing. In the parking lot were many up scale cars. In the waiting room we saw designer clothes, fancy hairstyle, nails and handbags. I was so shocked!
If you need to finance a dog, you don't have money for vet expenses. They are more costly than the purchase/adoption fee. If you can't afford vet expense, don't get a dog.
I worked at a Title I school for 19 years Most of our students lived in poverty, however, many parents got paid in cash, "under the table," so their reported income was far lower than their actual earnings. The kids got free school supplies and backpacks, free breakfast and lunch, yet wore Polo by Ralph Lauren clothes. And you should have seen the car line...Escalades, Mercedes, BMWs, Jags, Lexuses, etc. There were also true beater cars in the line, as well, but those were in the minority. People know exactly how to play the system. We also would have a clothing drive so parents could take what they needed at no charge. They would then turn around and sell those free clothes at garage sales, and buy those designer clothes for their kids. It really opened my eyes.
Programs do more harm them good
What's sad is that these people are probably taking from families that actually need it in order to fund their extravagant lifestyle.

I know people that are paycheck to paycheck and buy tattoos. It's insane.
Bad with money hints...On the Ramsey show, when you ask callers how much they make, the bad to good scale is if they start with weekly, then monthly and finally annually. Only folks that are good with money can plan for a whole year (or sometimes more) at a time. Folks that give a weekly amount are living day to day.
I've noticed here lately that I've been swiping my debit card like it's going outta style.... Started taking out my cash and using my RC wallet to control the spending.

My oldest daughter is a tatoo person (around 30+) and she is BEYOND broke. She has probably had 50 overdrawn fees this year. I've encouraged her to start watching the Dave Ramsey show, along with yours. She won't read a book either.
Our church requires everyone to fundraise for mission trips regardless of whether they can pay out of pocket for the trip. It's for the benefit of the HEART of the person asking, not the pocket. They learn humility and reliance on others, which will be needed on the trip!
This. You could always do it to where you make your kids earn the money and if you have the money pay for another kid or two to go
I would prefer that the church offer minimum wage jobs to the attendees - whatever the church needs. Still has humility, but no guilt trip on the family and friends.
I agree with others and also think the spirit of the trip is that the kids are doing work on their mission trip as representatives of the community they live in, so it makes sense that the community would financially support the trip. A mission trip is different from a vacation.
If you have to take out a loan for a dog, you can't afford to own a dog, trust me! 😀
In the car payment: This one is gross and used now, because I've used it. 😂😂😂😂😂😂 sounds like we need to clean up after ourselves!

Giving to missions trips isn’t just about making sure the kid can afford to go, it’s about being a small part of the gospel going out.
It definitely adds value to the whole experience to have them reach out to others for support if they truly want to go. It's what "community" is supposed to be about.

When I was in college and broke, I continued to use my cc but couldn’t afford to make even the minimum payments. I think I even took out a cash advance to make a payment on another cc. When the cc company called asking about not making a payment, I said I didn’t have any money. Then when they asked why I kept using the cc, I said because I don’t have any money! Duh!

Some people love to work. Work is great for your brain. Some people retire and stop interacting with people, they can't fill up their days. Working on your own terms isn't the worst thing in the world.
Unpopular opinion - you’re better off sending your donations to churches or missionaries already planted in another country than paying to send a high schooler on a vacation for a week so he can pose with orphan kids. Or choose a good organization to donate to that will actually help those in need. Churches need to move away from sending affluent kids to third world countries to “learn valuable lessons” and “gain perspective”.

28:42 I hear that a lot. The reality is that you need very little to retire. There are people living only on Social Security benefits. What gets a lot a people is lifestyle inflation. They want to retire with a certain standard of living. My suggestion is to keep your standard of living as low as possible until your investments can pay for it, then gradually raise your standard of living if your investments can still pay for it.
I remember when we where at the dealership and the guy “helping” us wanted us to think about how much we could afford a month instead of walking in and talking about how much in total. Didn’t realize we actual walked in wise, and walked out idiots that couldn’t breathe with more debt. 🤦🏼♀️
I have a bad habit of getting so gazelle intense that I start thinking about all the extra money I could throw at debt if I starve myself. Working on breaking this habit though.
I want to add some thoughts about the mission trip conundrum....( a family asking others to help fund even if you can afford it). I have had the same initial reaction when my husband was planning a mission trip with members of our church, but every mission trip or foundation that sponsors them encourages the participants to get sponsors from the community and their families because it is about service, not a vacation. The participant is giving the community a chance to participate in the practice of giving and supporting missions. I would think differently about it if it were for something like a school trip, though. I love the discussions, btw!
If you can't pay cash for a car, at least buy one that will last past the final payment. Examples, Toyotas and Hondas...

Hey guys! The one thing i would advise against that they recommend for cars is, upgrading multiple times. What is forgotten in that scenario is the amount of tags, title, and registration fees you'll end up paying over 2 or 3 cars. If you upgraded 3 times you could be spending upwards of 5-6k in fees. A better way is only upgrade once and stick with a cheaper car, preferably a honda or toyota so your maintenance costs over an extra year will be small compared to those extra registration fees of upgrading multiple cars.

So true. One of our vehicles we've been driving for almost 15 years. Only recently has it needed repairs, but each of those repairs has been cheaper than a modern car payment.

@wesleymills2641 In my state, you cant transfer for cars, but for trucks, you can with plates, etc. But you still have to pay taxes on each car plus new registration
What about when you were a saver but then had 4 children and a ginormous tax bill the same year some medical stuff came up and you needed new all weather tires to drive said kids to school without sliding off the road.
And you thank God you had the sense to save before kids because now you live in part off returns from the investments made during those saving years… and at least you have a house. That you own. Outright. And the car.
But you see your savings dwindling so you do the math and figure you might have 1 year left if you’re frugal…
and you return half the Christmas gifts you bought this year to cover the tires at least.
And you prepare to go back to work now that the youngest is finally in full time school.
But you fear you won’t be able to make enough fast enough before the snowball rolls downhill - over this family. And your industry has dramatically changed the decade you were birthing thanks to the advent of AI, and so you need courses now and certifications to help prove you still have muscle and those cost a dime…
Even though you moved to a cheaper place and downsized the house to deal.
What about when you see all your financial progress just sneaking out the window even though you closed and sealed the leaky doors?
In my biz, nobody hires fear or despair. People hire fun, stabilizing, adventurous, experimental, data driven, results producers.
How do I keep up that attitude on the outside while wringing my hands with worry on the inside - without feeling deceptive?
Don't forget the matriarchal deaths within 3 years of each other while the first bequeathed their scary husband to my husband and I's care as well as each coming with vehicles that turned into money pits to keep running, nearly being forced to move out of a rental that raised our rent $800 but within 2 weeks recending the rental denial and asking us to stay another year to which they will raise the rent another $100 totally $2900 so we must move next year, get our own cars back on the road, fix things we've damaged in the rental, and trying to figure how to get Grandpa, in the looses sense of the term, out of our house on savior benefits because he refuses to work but will make our lives with him shitte when we talk to him about it. :-(

9:27 The missions thing is so true. I’ve heard kids get advise from adults like, “Don’t work and save, the Church will fund it.” Like WHAT?!?
The schools in our area give every kid free lunch and breakfast. It's total junk full of chemicals and sugar but it's free

I've got a good friend with the highest degree for school teaching. She refuses to work in a big town due to the BS and the small towns and private schools won't hire her because there's other lower degree teachers available
I enjoy the podcast and honestly think it's civil life conversation and being real.
My parents paid for my mission trips BUT I still had to write the letters and do the work everyone else did. We just didn’t send the letter or benefit from the fundraisers. Now, I am thankful for the principles I learned.

I totally fell for the “I can afford the car payment so I can afford it” mindset. I recently traded in my brand new car for a 2021 dropping my monthly payment for $730 to $450 and paying it off in a year vs 5. Bad past financial choices do not mean you can’t correct them. I know the Ramsey way is to not have a loan but this is definitely a better situation than it was!
We bought our 3 kids the Amazon fire tablets and they were AWFUL to use within a year. They didn't have the memory for the kids to take photos and download the apps they wanted. They were slow and glitchy. Always disconnecting from the internet, etc. When they turned 9 years old we bought 2 ipads. One of our kids is part time and never really played his tablet after his mom got him a switch so we just decided that our older ipad mini could double as his, but he's never used it. These tablets will last until their high-school years so it was totally worth it, but we budgeted for it, and we bought the extreme cases for them and have rules in place so they don't get broken.
You guys are great...funny yet thought provoking and challenge in a good way! I remember when I went through a phase and wanted to get a tattoo. I had a friend that had many and was planning on getting more. He told me not to get it and that if he had to do it over again, he would not have gotten his first one. He said that it was like an addiction and once he got one, he wanted to get more...I thought that was interesting. Thank you for speaking truth with some fun thrown in!!!

That’s why I don’t like the term “Zero Based Budget”. It’s a psychological thing. To my (spender) mind the term “ Zero Based” encourages me to spend all my money down to zero left. So I just call it a “Me based” budget telling my brain have money left over at the end of the month to save fo Me.

But it is based on 0. Including SAVINGS and DEBT PAYMENTS. All the money will be gone to spending or saving or giving (charity, church)
@@rnewland89 yes, but you should always keep some kind of buffer amount in your checking and savings. Some ‘in case I screw it up money’. A Zero based budget tells my mind to spend everything. I often have a little bit left over when I budget. A ‘Me’ based budget tells my mind to keep that little bit for Me, and not to spend it. Like I said for me it’s a psychological thing. I’d end up spending those little bits on nonsense if I called it a Zero based budget.
I don't understand people who get degrees with no plan. I'm a bit addicted to education and am pursuing a second masters, but I do them part time and have specific plans for the degrees with high ROI, I refuse to take out debt for them, and my company subsidizes me.
We have close friends who receive food stamps but they eat out constantly and buy ridiculous things all the time, including going on trips. I love them but I do feel offended that they accept government help(i.e. tax money from all their friends, family and neighbors) and then spend money on things that are luxuries. They spend more on these things than even we do and we have really good income.
My grandkids love telestrations. For them it’s more fun when it doesn’t match. So much laughter 😂

RE school without end. I remember a line from a great uncle, speaking of his 30-year-old son, "People ask me what Steven is going to be when he gets out of school. I say, 'an old man.'"
When the kids are going on a mission trip, the band fundraiser, or the football fees for the year... I would be mortified if my kids were taught to just go ask for the money or for donations. Now if they're doing something of value, a car wash,a lawn mowing, etc that is something I can get behind. Because you can bet if I can afford the nice car and my kids are working for their fundraising I'm not going to feel an ounce of shame or guilt.
I know a couple who drank in front of their kids. When the son was old enough to drive he ran head on into a school bus DRUNK! He died instantly. Think about the example your setting.
In life, you should never have friends asking u for money, not even family.

I got one tattoo at 20. Hated it for years. Did 2 different forms of removal 3 times (so 6 sessions total). It is still slightly visible but much better.
16:22 iPads are expensive but they are the best tablet for certain things. I use mine (a couple year old refurbished Pro model) for digital art and when I’m ready to upgrade, I wait about 6-8 months after the newest model I want has come out and I buy a refurbished model which knocks the price down by a couple hundred dollars. I also give my husband the old one as he does digital art too and we trade in the one he has or gift it to family. This has the added effect of cheaper cases for said iPad pros. Love them.
I bought my kids used Ralph Lauren at consignmnt sales. The quality (12 years ago) was far superior to big box store clothes, but I i paid the same price.

23:33 I purchased my Ford Focus in December of 2013 with a loan. I paid it off early. I still have the car and plan on keeping it for a lot longer. It has 12K original miles.

I once had a coworker who explained me that he contacted an organism to receive food every week, with a tim horton coffe on his hand. The only thing I was thinking, was those generous peoples, giving food and money to an organism, thinking they will help a family with the parents loosing their job, or someone reducing their hours to take care of a sick member of their family. Nope, they were giving food to a dude with a full time job who bought a 3d printer last week.
The only issue I found 3 min in is assuming parents buy cars and put their kids on reduced meal. I drive a 01 Camry so this doesn’t apply but I do have other parents at my daughter’s school. Who were well off but then laid off.
I used to live in an apartment complex in the "east" side of town to save up money for a house. Nearby was a state funded daycare, most if not all parents were receiving free daycare (that may start when baby is 6 mo old). A lot of the cars, not all, were big SUVs, luxury type cars, new, etc
@@b.c.2836 you said it not all. Like I stated earlier sometimes stuff just happens my friend was making $70k a year. One day he got fired for helping a single mom not get fired ended up backfiring on him. He had a nice truck and now even if he wanted to return it for something less luxuries because he can't find a job with equal or more pay can't. because buying a older car would be more expensive. It's not as black and white as they make it. Plus this isn't an all winner economy. you can't have everyone saving 15% of income to invest. because it's the poor people driving up debt that keep wealthy richer.

I agree but I also order my staples from Amazon and therefore, I have regular box deliveries. I live in a very small remote town with 1 grocery store and buying staples from Amazon gives me room in my budget. I prefer to buy local but refuse the pay a premium for the exact same item.

My famous line for when I was bad with money was “ it’s fiiiine! I’ll worry about it when the bill comes” or “ This is now next months problem ( as I swipe a card with barely any available balance!)

In terms of the packages, this hit close to home for me. I do live in an older run down home that I am renting while saving up for my retirement. I had originally hoped to save up for a deposit on my own home once I became debt free ( which I dud a year ago), but have decided it is more important to catch up on my retirement savings at this time. To Rachel's point I have several items on subscribe & save plans thru Amazon, chewy & Wal-Mart but the time savings is worth it to me. Having 1 day off a week which is usually spent helping my parents or taking care of my niece this is one thing I can do to help make my life easier overall.

In my frenemy’s defense the trip to Mexico was planned first. They just didn’t want to cancel it to pay for vet bills
Prefacing this with love love this podcast! However, I think Rachel missed the point with the principle purpose of asking for support (Not just money) for mission trips. The reason kids should very much so be able to ask for financial support for mission trips, even if the parents can afford it, is that they are allowing you to partner with you and God in that mission. If you can afford your kid's mission trip, I don't think it would make much sense to force them to limit who is able to partner with them and God in their mission just because you can afford the mission personally. Obviously if you choose that you want to support that mission and be their exclusive supporter there is nothing wrong with that, but just a thought! Again, love the podcast and appreciate the content!!!
Keep the car until you save up enough money to buy the next car and keep saving for the next car. My grandparents did this and bought a car every 10 years with cash. They owned 2 cars that I knew of. A 67 Olds which my parents bought when they bought a new car in 1977. My grandmother never bought another car after my grandfather died in 1981and I eventually bought that car from her in 1993. The cycle of used cars was complete. I even bought the last car my dad owned from my mom when my dad died. It wasn't an Olds, but it continued the cycle. It was a 2010 Toyota Yaris with 30K miles in 2017.

Ok. Now I want to comment! I have been doing a job years that I did for play as a kid! I want to continue to work. Most people look down on my job. But here's the deal. I'm 72. I could retire, but it has kept me active and motivated. As a result, I look younger than most my age and I'm healthier. So...I'm in no hurry to retire. Why ? If I'm healthy?
Retirement is a relatively new thing in the last 100+ years.
Regarding the Amazon packages comment ... I do purchase from Amazon and have some items on autoship for my pets, etc. I rent; the exterior of the house is in dire need of painting; my landlord has been promising to paint for 9 years ... so ...
When you live in a trailer park but your cars are a BMW, Lexus or a car that had been souped up.
Ok @Rachel my house is a little rundown and I do have Amazon packages come to my house 🏠 not everyday BUT my husband wants to do it BUT he's an avid hiker, so guess what if the weekend is lovely guess where he's at! So yes, @George esthetics aren't important, and I'm not going to fight about it.

In my case, my self esteem is not tied to how much money I spend. So I don't have a problem accummulating or managing my wealth. I just use money to improve my life not harm it by debt.

After working with very old people in a physically demanding environment, trust me, you’ll want the option of retirement if you live that long.
Designer clothes for kids is a slippery slope. On one hand sometimes buying for the sake of quality is fine. On the other… kids then tend to become label 🏷️ whores and end up believing anything other than Ralph Lauren is garbage and that’s simply not true!
I know some parents that like their kids to dress nice but some stuff thats out there is like REALLY expensive for no reason other than the label.
Plus most kids grow so quickly! Those designer clothes won't fit long before they have gotten decent amounts of wear. Edit: Just got to that part in the episode. 😂
A new (basic) iPad is $329 straight from Apple. You can even get a "new" refurbished one for $269. They get more expensive if you go for the Air or Pro versions…

@@autumnjerene That's fine and dandy. I actually bought a Fire Tablet in 2020. The screen is now dying and there's a crack on the back plastic case. The iPad will last more than 5 years and keeps its value if you were to sell it. I'd be lucky to get $25 for the Fire Tablet.
