I've lived in Louisiana and Alaska, my husband and I liked Oregon. I wanted to avoid the Portland area (too crowded and overpriced) and the Eugene area is almost the same. The Roseburg area seemed like the place. It is center to so much: coast is an hour and half to the west, multiple waterfalls about an hour drive, lakes, streams, cute parks, most people I've met were so nice and down to earth. We eventually bought our house in Myrtle Creek (Where Nature Is Your Neighbor). I've met so many nature lovers here, and I feel it's safe to walk down the street. I couldn't say that about the other places I've lived. Yes there are homeless, and my family was homeless for a while too. The struggle is real for a lot of people, everywhere.
We’ve lived downtown for the last 5 years with a little one. We’d love to find place thats a little quieter with room to roam eventually, but I can honestly say it’s been wonderful. We can see all the parades right from our living room, our neighbors are awesome, there’s cute shops, and great restaurants, we know most of the homeless folk in the area and treat them with love and respect, so they treat us good in return. The police in Roseburg do a great job of keeping things quiet in our area. I leave my car unlocked here even most of the time and have never had a single problem. We go for walks after dark every evening in the summer and have always felt completely safe. Not sure why people mention drug needles all over, I’ve yet to see one. I think your attitude and outlook have a lot to do with what you see around you. We love it for the most part. Loud trucks and motorcycles driving by our building can be startling sometimes. Especially late at night, and the occasional fight or mental breakdown happen, but compared to large cities I’ve lived in it really isn’t bad at all. We love the area up in the hills above downtown. And over off of Harvard is cute. Wish we had groceries closer to this side of town but all in all Roseburg is one of my favorite towns I’ve lived in. It’s absolutely beautiful. And I’ve lived all over the country. Negative side I’d say is that the rental market is awful and there are definitely a few slumlords in town. Our rent has been raised at least 7 times in the last 5 years. But honestly I think that’s a West Coast thing. I was born and raised in Portland so it’s not new to me to have greedy landlords.
Thanks for taking the time for the thoughful comment! I think the people that refer to any part of Roseburg as a "bad area" likely have never lived in a big city. If they were to go live in a metro area for a little while I think they would see how mild Roseburg is. Now for us that have lived in Roseburg for decades, there is certainly more homeless and drug use than there was in the past. So that may be why some areas have better reputations than others. But our "bad neighborhoods" are many large city's good neighborhoods as far as I'm concerned. If you need help finding needles venture off the path by Gaddis park for instance, you'll find them. But to your point, the average person in Roseburg isn't going to come in contact with stuff like that unless you are legitimately walking through a homeless camp.
I think something that wasn't mentioned is the walkability of a lot of neighborhoods. Personally, anything around Harvard is lovely because of the ease of access to amenities. We have a large disabled community who does get forgotten in a lot of places, unfortunately. Down town is lovely accessibility wise and it's absolutely beautiful, a lot of neat shops! I personally would not recommend anyone live here due to the hate I've experienced as someone in the LGBTQIA community and the lack of affprdable housing, but for the older folks who are retiring here, I'm sure they enjoy it. We also can access many different parts of oregon within a couple of hours, so location wise Roseburg/Douglas County is great.
It’s crazy seeing you walk the areas that I go through frequently because I’m not driving my truck right now. If you ever see a big tall guy playing Pokémon go feel free to come say hi. I’ve lived here a while
This video is awesome. Your name is almost great (my name is Tony) :P Great interviews, keep up the good work. I've lived here for over 40 years, but I lived other places for 10 years. Guess what, Roseburg is great. Its not for everyone, but I'd rather live somewhere to matches my values and values my time. In bigger cities in Oregon I have found myself sitting in traffic for literally hours wondering why I lived there. Keep up the good work Anthony.
We moved from Utah to Days Creek 4 years ago and love it. We started our dog training business here which has been really great. Everyone we have encountered has been very kind, even when they have found out we were from “south county” 😂. I love that I can go up to Roseburg and see wonderful shows at UACT or visit great wineries or be to the coast in two hours (vs a 9 hour drive living in Utah and going to say California), and Jackson Street is also pretty cool. Yes, the homeless and drug use are an issue, but I have seen that just as bad in many places.
My wife and I are actually building a home in the Winchester area. We're looking to get out of the rental and start making something our own. And building it to cater to my wife's disability has been really nice. We are moving from the Gresham/Portland area and we both like the larger, small city feel of Roseburg. It's actually about the size of the town I grew up in back in Utah. By building we we will end up spending a little less to get the house that really caters to our needs. And it's been really great! I've been enjoying your videos too. Introduced me to a few places we need to try out when we're down there.
Welcome to Roseburg, where you won't find big city amenities but you will find community and small town values. We wish you the best and hope to see you around town.
I love how beautiful it is here. There are so any things to explore within a short driving distance. I would Iike to see the area become more family friendly. More activities and opportunities for families with young children.
@@TheBeckhamGroup What would the list of 5 'children's activities' be? There's lots of differing things to do...millions of dollars have been spent in the last few decades on exactly that issue.
I know when I lived there downtown/ mill/pine areas were very unkempt and always a lot of drugs around there. I remember walking and seeing syringes on the sides of the roads and thinking to myself how is this almost worse than Baltimore MD?
@@Nwladylaura369 I don’t know for a small town. It has a horrible drug problem and well I was there downtown area in Mill Street /pine and for all the used syringes and balls of foil laying about in the streets I have to disagree
How long does it take to get to amenities like supermarkets, doctors offices, and a hospital? Where I’m currently living the population is under 15,000 and we don’t have anything like that here. There’s a supermarket about 20 minutes away, but you have to drive through the desert wasteland to get there, and everything else is at least 45 minutes (usually an hour or more) away. Looking to move in 2025.
Agreed. It's all perspective. Someone may say something bad about living in Downtown Roseburg and the person next to them has lived there for 30 years and argues it's the best neighborhood in town... Haha! But it's always good get the perspective of other locals so it isn't just my opinions floating around on the internet. Thanks for watching!
East side of town was the so called bad part of Winston in the seventies and eighties LoL, called it cheapside, sorry I'm laughing pretty hard here but there never was any really bad parts of town back then, neither Roseburg or Winston. I've heard that the homeless problem is bad there now so I'm sure it's not as safe as it was when I was a kid there.
The worst area is around where Rose school district is, my grandmother was a substitute lunch lady (yes that job exists) and the amount of kids who went to Rose school who begged her for seconds as they only got food there is just sad Also the reason why there's a crappy house next to a beautiful house in the pine street area is because of the fact that they're historical houses, you'll get a several thousand dollar grant to renovate the place, yeah give an addict 20 grand that they don't have to pay back and see what happens
Loved Roseburg when I was a kid. I have family there. It’s gorgeous. However. Not unlike Portland it has evolved into an unemployment and drug induced mess down town. It’s extremely unfortunate
Lol. These people are too nice. Roseburg is a great town. Don't get me wrong. At the same time there's a lot of glossing going on. I live and work downtown and just today there was some lady camped out in front of Roseburg hydroponics screaming and yelling at random and at random people that may or may not be there. Then later a random dude out front of my work wearing a sleeping bag like a cape flailing around. Then there's the dude walking around screaming and playing with his genitals. Yep normal night in downtown Roseburg... 😂
That sounds like downtown Roseburg to me... 😂 One reason I refuse to buy a commercial building downtown for our real estate office. Awesome buildings, a lot of history, great restaurants, but definitely some less desirable foot traffic. Of course our issues are minimal in comparison to Eugene, Portland, or any larger city for that matter. But the mental health / homeless issue is an issue.
Nobody wants to be the one to say that the homeless problem detracts from the city but it certainly does. I will say that city council has worked on anti camping regulation to make it a bit better. Hopefully people that want to remain homeless move on.
@@tonster181g more importantly nobody wants to admit that we create the society we live in. It is the way it is, because it's been allowed to be that way.
