I LOVE Melrose, Melqua, and the Glide area. Choosing a place to live around Roseburg is vital in that using deep investigation into your prospective neighbors. Any beautiful estate can have a crack house nearby. Downtown is kinda cute. Yeah, no nightlife. Rural properties: always watch for cougars...alotta them.
It's about a 3 hour drive from Roseburg. It's been awhile since I've been there, but I want to make a video just about Crater Lake sometime. I'll have to put it on my to-do list!

We are visiting Roseburg this year, but not to please with some of the negatives comments. Doing some research on Roseburg and hopefully we decide than if this the place for our retirement.
I would think hard and long about moving here. In the 15 years I've been here. the negative issues have increased greatly. If you think Roseburg would have a charming downtown, it most certainly does not. More and more shops close on a regular basis, and the homeless situation has increased. I do not know if you have young children, but schools are poor, and becoming worse. As far as medical care, there is the VA . The one private hospital, is well known for it's poor care. If you like hunting/fishing, this might work well for you. Mother Nature is at her finess here. But, if you like bookstores and films, and that sort of thing you will be disappointed. Needless to say, meth and opiates, are boundless. All of this of course, is just my opinion, and tastes vary greatly. But, do your research, and spend a lot of time here before making a commitment. Best of luck to you.
PS Actually, we do have one book store. It is an used one, and it's quite good. While Away Books has a huge variety, and they are in excellent condition. The store is cozy, and the owner Josh, knows his stuff, and is very pleasant. Coffee drinks, and pastries are available. Both are quite good, and are reasonibly priced.
I was there last week. Beautiful. I love the surrounding area with farms and forest for hiking. I did not know the area and stayed in the southern part of town. It had many transient people and I did not feel very safe and went back to my hotel around 7pm. I thought how sad that was for such an adorable town. I love San Francisco and understand the heart ache of living in a nice place, which it was back in the 80s and now it is gong down hill. I did see my dream farm about 15 minutes out of town. I hope the transient issue improves. It is not fair for all the other hard working law abiding citizens. God bless.
Thanks so much for taking the time to comment! Yes, this is something I've noticed a lot more of over the last few years. There are only a few places you'll really see transients in Roseburg. Downtown and South Roseburg is the primary area like most city downtown areas there seems to be more homeless. This is where the homeless shelter is and there are many public parks nearby. However, if you say anything like that to the folks that live in the older historic area of downtown they'll stick up for their neighborhood saying that it's beautiful over there and much better than it used to be! But personally, I agree with your observation! 😊
It is definitely something I'm going to mention in the next pros and cons video. Smoke was never an issue growing up here, but these last few years have been pretty bad. Sometimes 2-3 weeks of smoke where it's unpleasant to be outside. Again, it never used to be an issue. So hopefully we've just had a couple unlucky years and can go back to normal this summer!
As a native I do want to tell all outsiders it is terrible here, I mean truly awful, you will be much better staying where you are at. Douglas County is allergy hell, that is no joke.
Roseburg is best kept a secret, huh? Haha! I know what you mean. And the allergies are terrible in this whole region from Douglas County to Portland area. If you have bad allergies it's like having a cold several months of the year. I think I'll get the allergy shot this year, even easier than taking the pill every day!

Restaurants and bars sorted by price I would say: Parrott House, True Kitchen + Bar, Brix, Blac N Bleu Bistro, and McMenamins are all popular spots. Two Shy and Backside and are both popular breweries as well. I recommend checking out some of our hiking videos on the channel for ideas. Because of the fires this last year there isn't access to some of my favorite hikes. But Wolf Creek Falls would be a great place to start! Fishing is really good in some rarely touched Coast Mountain streams but you have to hit gravel roads to get there, Brewster Canyon has one of the many forks of the Coquille River and it is full of native Cutthoat trout, same with the Williams River up in the Callahans. Another spot that is either strike out or home run is Fish Lake in the Rogue-Umpqua Divide Wilderness so it is hike in, if you time it right you can catch a ton of brook trout and some of them are very big for brookies. All branches of the Umpqua can be killer for steelhead and near the Umpqua and Smith River mouths the Striped Bass is great and main Umpqua has great smallmouth. Diamond lake at times can be great for rainbow and Lemola Lake for Browns. Nice hikes are Susan Creek falls with the Indian mounds and Wilson Falls which is short.

One bedroom apartments can still be found for around $700+ occasionally. If it's a one bedroom house you could be up to $1200+ in the Roseburg area. If you're open to Winston or South Douglas County there are cheaper rentals available.
I lived in Roseburg and Winston many years ago, for years, and there wasn't even a Walmart then! I think we had just the one theater, in Garden Valley Shopping Center...didn't even have a mall! Had to go to Eugene for school clothes, etc. I am surprised to hear that the population is growing, since I have heard for some time that the economy was circling the drain.

True story. The news also said there are no records of that happening before in our area and they estimate it has been over 60 years since we've seen anything close. We didn't get any snow in the valley for 2020-2021 winter, which being born and raised here I can say that is the typical winter. But I still went to Diamond Lake Resort not too far from town up Highway 138 to play in some snow and use the tube hill this year. Tons of fun! ❄
We do get snow flurries and maybe half inch to a inch of snow but gone by afternoon..this yr has been a very drought yr little rain and no snow flurries. I have lived her for 22 years.

On the allergies try high dose vitamin c. Whole food source like acerola cherry powder is best. I had terrible allergies for decades but got rid of them last summer with a couple weeks of mega dose vitamin c. Couldn't believe it worked but it did.

I'm the opposite, grew up around that area but live in AZ and love it here, I can understand not wanting to live in Phoenix though, the traffic and people suck. I'm hoping in a few years to get out of Phoenix and move to a smaller town out in the desert
Sad to say that Roseburg will be next destination this month. My grandma is in her golden years and lately she's getting frailer...and my mom thinks it's our family's turn to look after her. In my opinion, it will be a bad idea. I'm comfortable where I am in Oceanside, California, but I'm not willing to leave everything behind for a place that's in the middle of nowhere and has less career opportunities and less shopping experience.
There is more to life than shopping experiences 😉 But yes, less career opportunities is for certain! I suggest visiting some of the outdoor attractions we have. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. But coming from a city like Oceanside will certainly be an adjustment! I wish you and your grandmother the best of luck! No. Having "nothing to do" does not keep anyone in that region (Roseburg, Eugene...) from "getting in to trouble". It just causes you all to take what gets you in trouble, and take it inside, and underground. Which is precisely why that region (see above) feels exactly like you just entered an endless episode of Twin Peaks. Tell me I'm wrong.

I'm looking to start a family within the next 5 years and I am wondering if Roseburg is a good place to put my roots down for at least the next 25 years. Is Roseburg a good place to raise kids? Thanks for watching! I was born and raised here and have nothing bad to say about the public education available in Roseburg. Of course there are some schools that are rated higher than others. And there are private school options as well, however I do believe most are Christian schools. Community is great here. Everyone has really come together to start to turn Roseburg into something special. As far as actual crime rates I've read articles with mixed reviews. I can really only tell you from a locals perspective that my social circle and myself have always felt safe living here. There are some neighborhoods that I wouldn't leave my bike or bag of cans on the front lawn because it might not be there in the morning. Petty things like that, but that's probably anywhere you go. We have night crawlers we call them, people doing meth in south gate , but no murders gangs or crazy weather, seems like it gets worse the further you go south, my family founded Roseburg, I grew up and lived in Winston for 20 years and wouldn’t recommend it now.. my family and I moved to Sutherlin, it’s 10 minutes from Roseburg and an hour from the coast or an hour to Eugene, nice little town
@@frackit284 I grew up in Winston and Tenmile too in the seventies and eighties, was back there in 2004 and was shocked by how far it had gone downhill, but I kinda think that's just the way things are pretty much anywhere unless you live in a gated community
I personally think smaller schools are better than big ones, so I would opt for the Winston side rather than Roseburg, as all the elementary and middle schools go to Douglas High School rather than Roseburg High.
We have Columbia White Tailed Deer in the area. There are only a limited number of controlled hunts that specifically list them in the bag limit. The North Bank Habitat Management area is where I'm most familiar with seeing them. I'll likely do a video on the North Bank trail sometime soon. It's a fun place to explore!
My daughter and her fiance' just drove the 2000 miles from DFW to Roseburg. Drove the moving fan for three days. Daughter got her first professional job at Umpqua CC and her fiance' is a person who works from home and can work from anywhere. Really excited for them. I've been to southern Oregon, and they haven't. I told them they were moving to paradise.
How are they liking it? I’ve considered moving to the DFW. We went for an entire weekend and it was so clean and all the folks were very courteous. We didn’t see a single tent, graffiti (except in Dallas) and 3 drugged out people in Dallas. Other than that, lots of police which was nice
I'd say Portland Oregon is the meth capital, or at least used to be. I remember as a kid there would be full on documentaries about Portland's meth problem. But I'm sure it's a problem everywhere nowadays.
We have beautiful, majestic animals - many that are not meat for humans - come kill them 😡 I was on board until you mentioned hunting cougars and bears for sport 😡
I've noticed quite a bit of homeless population growth in the area over the last year. But I know Eugene, Coos Bay, of course Portland, and many other areas have been experiencing the same. It's really a sad deal 😕
I plan on moving somewhere up there from texas. I want a peaceful place and I love cold weather that isn’t so harsh. But I want to know how people make a living there.

We have a lot of folks that move here from AZ. I also have a handful of clients who live the summer and falls here in Roseburg, and winter and spring in AZ 🙂
I'm the opposite, grew up around that area but live in AZ and love it here, I can understand not wanting to live in Phoenix though, the traffic and people suck. I'm hoping in a few years to get out of Phoenix and move to a smaller town out in the desert
Sad to say that Roseburg will be next destination this month. My grandma is in her golden years and lately she's getting frailer...and my mom thinks it's our family's turn to look after her. In my opinion, it will be a bad idea. I'm comfortable where I am in Oceanside, California, but I'm not willing to leave everything behind for a place that's in the middle of nowhere and has less career opportunities and less shopping experience.
There is more to life than shopping experiences 😉 But yes, less career opportunities is for certain! I suggest visiting some of the outdoor attractions we have. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. But coming from a city like Oceanside will certainly be an adjustment! I wish you and your grandmother the best of luck! No. Having "nothing to do" does not keep anyone in that region (Roseburg, Eugene...) from "getting in to trouble". It just causes you all to take what gets you in trouble, and take it inside, and underground. Which is precisely why that region (see above) feels exactly like you just entered an endless episode of Twin Peaks. Tell me I'm wrong.
I'm not familiar with twin peaks. But there's undoubtedly drug use that goes on here. I mean, I'm sure there is everywhere across the united states. Check out the latest "Roseburg Exposed" video. We touch on some of the "issues" here in the Roseburg area. Thanks for watching!

Born and raised in Oregon. Educated in Oregon. I've never really lived anywhere else. I'm looking to start a family within the next 5 years and I am wondering if Roseburg is a good place to put my roots down for at least the next 25 years. Is Roseburg a good place to raise kids? Is K-12 education decent? Kid-friendly neighborhoods? Crime rates? Community engagement? Any resources you can point me to that can answer those questions and more? Thanks! Great video!
Thanks for watching! I was born and raised here and have nothing bad to say about the public education available in Roseburg. Of course there are some schools that are rated higher than others. And there are private school options as well, however I do believe most are Christian schools.
Community is great here. Everyone has really come together to start to turn Roseburg into something special. As far as actual crime rates I've read articles with mixed reviews. I can really only tell you from a locals perspective that my social circle and myself have always felt safe living here. There are some neighborhoods that I wouldn't leave my bike or bag of cans on the front lawn because it might not be there in the morning. Petty things like that, but that's probably anywhere you go.

We have night crawlers we call them, people doing meth in south gate , but no murders gangs or crazy weather, seems like it gets worse the further you go south, my family founded Roseburg, I grew up and lived in Winston for 20 years and wouldn’t recommend it now..
my family and I moved to Sutherlin, it’s 10 minutes from Roseburg and an hour from the coast or an hour to Eugene, nice little town
@@frackit284 I grew up in Winston and Tenmile too in the seventies and eighties, was back there in 2004 and was shocked by how far it had gone downhill, but I kinda think that's just the way things are pretty much anywhere unless you live in a gated community

I personally think smaller schools are better than big ones, so I would opt for the Winston side rather than Roseburg, as all the elementary and middle schools go to Douglas High School rather than Roseburg High.

Easy to see white-tailed deer?
We have Columbia White Tailed Deer in the area. There are only a limited number of controlled hunts that specifically list them in the bag limit. The North Bank Habitat Management area is where I'm most familiar with seeing them. I'll likely do a video on the North Bank trail sometime soon. It's a fun place to explore!
Tons of them... in factc2you should avoid driving in the evenings and mornings on any road. Lol

My daughter and her fiance' just drove the 2000 miles from DFW to Roseburg. Drove the moving fan for three days. Daughter got her first professional job at Umpqua CC and her fiance' is a person who works from home and can work from anywhere. Really excited for them. I've been to southern Oregon, and they haven't. I told them they were moving to paradise.

How are they liking it? I’ve considered moving to the DFW. We went for an entire weekend and it was so clean and all the folks were very courteous. We didn’t see a single tent, graffiti (except in Dallas) and 3 drugged out people in Dallas. Other than that, lots of police which was nice

Roseburg is the meth capital
I'd say Portland Oregon is the meth capital, or at least used to be. I remember as a kid there would be full on documentaries about Portland's meth problem. But I'm sure it's a problem everywhere nowadays.

I've noticed quite a bit of homeless population growth in the area over the last year. But I know Eugene, Coos Bay, of course Portland, and many other areas have been experiencing the same. It's really a sad deal 😕

There's a lot of gas stations and smoke shops if I end up getting an apartment and you have a bicycle you might want to keep it inside there's a lot of bike thefts in Roseburg right now
Weather is mild but the months and months of grey sky can get depressing
