1977 Ford F150 Cheap Truck Challenge Turned Ultra4 Ford

  • This 1977 For F-150 has come a long way since it won Cheap Truck Challenge back in 2013! It had lived its entire life in the Carson Valley, although since then I have driven it as far as Cabo San Lucas and Anchorage. It still has the vintage sheetmetal and patina, nearly every aspect of the dentside F-150 has been upgraded over the years to stand up to the 40-inch Nitto Trail Grapplers. The original 351W, NP435, and NP205 have been upgraded with a 460, ZF5, and Off Road Design Doubler that puts an NP203 range box in front of the NP205. The engine was built by LA Speed with a full roller valvetrain, Edelbrock heads, an Edelbrock intake manifold, ARP fasteners, and is topped with FI Tech.
The five speed made the truck way more driveable on long trips, and the suspension that uses front radius arms from Rock Hound and rear Deaver leaf springs provides great stability on the road but does sacrifice some articulation when compared to a three-link suspension. Rock Hound also added three-inch bypass shocks to all four corners and Sam Cothrun from Samco Fab dialed the shocks in for an amazing ride in any terrain. It isn’t exactly an Ultra4 car but it does fit the theme with big shocks, big tires, and a big engine.
Details abound in this truck, from the TIG-welded roll cage that Nate’s Precision built and tied into the rock sliders, to the PRP split bench seat, to the PSC steering system. All the armor was built at Nate’s Precisions as well and was left bare to rust and fit the theme of an old ranch truck. The Super Duty axles were built at Axleline with Detroit Lockers and 5.13 Sierra gears, and the front axle was upgraded with Dynatrac ball joints and a Free Spin Kit in order to live with the 6,900-pound curb weight and 40-inch-tall Nitto Trail Grapplers. If there is one truck that is social media gold for me, this is it. That’s how it got the name Raymond… everyone loves Raymond!

Oops! I screwed up and said the Warn winch is a 16.5cti. It is actually a 16.5ti off of the old UA Ranch Truck. I recently bought the same winch for the front of my Ram. You can get one of your own at: www.warn.com/165ti-heavyweight-winch-68801

This was the truck that got me into dentside fords. I was 12 when I first saw it and I fell in love with them. I’m 20 now and have owned multiple dentsides and currently own a 79 bronco that I’m building. Crazy my love for them started from this truck right here.

I bought a 79 f350 standard cab long box truck 5 years ago…factory king pin Dana 60 up front and Dana 60 rear…factory 4.10 gears with LSD.
C6 auto now with a 460 (factory 400 was blown) been sitting since 91 and I’ve slowly been resurrecting it! Runs and drives nice now, cab and chassis are solid but needs some love! Very fun truck to drive …many people want me to do what you’ve done to yours! Tempting but this truck is neat the way it is….only about 10,000 of these trucks were produced in 79. I love seeing these old fords brought back to life and used some how.
Whether it be stock or modified! Great build and I enjoyed the video!

I'm glad John Conner made the radiator shroud. That will make it Terminator proof. This truck is as good as anything out there from what I can see. The capabilities really cover a lot of bases with the ability to rock crawl and yet travel all the way to Alaska. Only thing I don't agree with is the " Patina ". Some people like it but it does take away from the truck. The tires probably cost more than a decent coat of paint and I'm sure budget isn't the reason. Still love the truck for its toughness.

I just machined a set of high steer arms for my kingpin axle. I’m probably gonna go with the solid 7075 drag link right out the gate. I’ve been through a lot of factory drag links so far.
The lack of visibility and size is kind of the fun part. More of a aim and send it approach.
