I personally hated the human canvas jury part. It made ppl feel bad about this new permanent thing they got on their skin, and you can tell that some of them were visibly upset when their piece got trashed. Ultimately, a tattoo is art and subjective. If the canvas likes it, no one should tell them otherwise. Then the judges get to judge on technique, which is objective

Same. I hated the one with the daughter who got a portrait of her mom with too many wrinkles. They could have easily given criticism without calling her "leatherface." It was so sad because they actually liked it.

My immediate thought is of that one season where they kicked off the guy who didn't have tats. Like they railed him HARD about it. So he and some of the people kind of laughed and drew all over him in sharpie, and the judges lost their shit.
Like sorry if you can dish it but can't take it?
I'm glad it wasn't as dramatic in person as it was on the show. I do feel bad for the people who thought they loved their tats to get eviscerated on tv though.

I've noticed that as well, but I think in the later seasons, like Season 8-9 and on, judges tried to at least give some positive words of encouragement to eliminated artists (especially if the artists were eliminated based on tiny details or technicalities, and not on shitty tattoos). I thought it was a positive change. In the earlier seasons, they were absolutely brutal, and often ridiculous in their critiques (i.e. when they sent Nick home in Season 2, after dealing with that nightmare of canvas Litza).

Though I agree, to some fairness I think when it comes to art there does have to be some flexibility involved on a case by case.
For instance when the tattoo is well-applied but unappealing vs. poorly applied, but appealing from afar. I get as tattoo-artists Peck and Nunez know what to look for, but the average person probably doesn't care/know and just wants a good looking tattoo.
One thing I do like about Nunez is that he's typically unyielding when it comes to cuts and excessive trauma.

In season 3 Craig got unfairly dropped from the competition for his pinup tattoo because the judges found it "unappealing." I thought the tattoo looked like the quality was good and they did not point out any flaws in that tattoo, imo the judges were biased because it was more sexual than other pinups (as per his canvas's request) and the subject of the pinup was a black woman. However, in multiple instances, the judges are extremely sexist and I find it very ironic that they've decided to censor Peck but not the open sexism.

My friend and tattoo artist was on an episode of Ink Master: Angels.
According to him, the producer you mentioned is exactly all the things pointed out in this video. She wanted my friend, who was in a flood that almost killed him, to lie and say it was in hurricane Harvey for added drama. My friend refused, angrily because he had friends and family that had lost so much in hurricane Harvey, and refused to diminish their stories or the stories of others by lying on it.
Once he refused to do what the show told him to do, he said that the producer and the "angels" started acting completely different towards him, yet edited the show to make him look like a hot head about being critiqued, when in reality he was pissed because they kept trying to force him to say he almost died in hurricane Harvey.

True, while I agree some responsibility is on the artist to express why something might not look right for the placement + size + style combinations but ultimately the canvas are the ones having to carry it so what they want is what they want. Sometimes the judges go way overboard with what they think looks " cool " or " creative " as opposed to what's technically sound work.
At least with other shows, like all the Gordan Ramsay cooking shows, even when the dish isn't plated as they wanted, they still acknowledge good technique in ingredients and flavors. Not to mention they also routinely actually demonstrate their own skills to not only prove they know what they are doing but also proof that the things they ask of each contestant is doable for those with the ability.
I've not once seen one of these " master " artists throw down for fun during a challenge tattoo sessions under the same time constraints to prove that they not only can but that what they preach makes sense.

I was a human canvas on season 12 . we filmed from 9 - 9pm and it is true about the judges are told what to say. theres like cue cards behind the cameras. in my experience, the artists did only have 6 hours to complete the challenge. im a bit shocked when i watched the episode because someone actually walked out.. I guess the tattoo looked complete enough ( i wont say who it was) and it wasnt included in the ep. In my experience, my artist was incredibly nice and we talked about anything really- and they provided snack and water and drinks, and even pizza after a long session. My throat was a bit sore and it was a bit hard to talk and they made me repeat my lines twice which was kinda embarrassing. they did tell us what to say really, just to shout out the names under the skull and a brief description of what we wanted. The producers kept telling us though " your design was chosen because it is doable, if the artist tries to change your mind do not let them - theyre here for a reason and can do what you asked." thats probably what stood out to me the most because in hindsight thats what you see when a canvas and artist lash out at each other... its because they told us to not back down on our design LOL. It was a fun experience overall. I love my tattoo and thankful i have a great one.

The artist however says that he decided to leave because he was told to start an argument with his canvas to bump up the drama of the show. The producers literally told him to start drama just because. But since they obviously couldn’t just randomly have him leave they decided to pretend his work wasn’t good enough.

Even the most competitive contestants are respectful to each other, and show genuine delight at seeing their opponents' weapons perform well.
In an industry that is all about manufactured drama, having none of it at all just seems more real.

i binge inkmaster, i think it's so fun and i learn a lot about different styles and requirements for a good tattoo. however, the amount of black/dark skinned canvases on that show is basically nonexistent, and while people can argue that this is to make for an even playing field, i will have to remind them that this show does not care even in the slightest about whether you are good or bad at a specific style of tattooing. the whole point of the show is to put artists out of their comfort zone and make them show how they can be, as celle said, a master of all trades. so why do they refuse to tattoo dark skin? you cannot be a master of inking if you cannot ink everyone - not just exclusively white skin. these people may be able to switch up their style a lot, but the show is not letting them are not inclusive at all. (:

His mermaid tattoo was better than Amanda’s but they were just crapping all over the fact that the mermaid didn’t look feminine and “didn’t have the right curves”. As someone whose company collaborated with an extremely famous reality TV show for one episode, I can tell you that even if things are not actually "scripted" in the sense of feeding people lines, most of what goes on is total BS. They have a huge bag of tricks to get what they want that includes taking ridiculous amounts of footage so they can edit it into whatever they want, taking things out of context, manipulative contracts, and manipulative questions and situations. Reality TV is never a depiction of reality, it is, at best, people thrown into an artificial situation forced to follow artificial rules, and then whatever is filmed is twisted into a completely different version of reality. Also, it is common place to offer certain contestants contractual guarantees to make it to one of the final rounds.

Technique is not subjective. You can not like the style or subject matter of a tattoo, but still think it has good placement, linework, saturation, etc. The same is true in the opposite way too. For example let's say you like color realistic shark tattoos, but the line work in the tattoo has wobbles so you point out the technique of the tattoo was poorly done.

Andrea is actually really nice but she's doing a job and her job is to make entertaining TV. And yes editing is a real thing, but they film for 2 super long days and it can't all be shown. The time limit is real, but it doesn't mean you have to use the whole 6hrs if you're done early you could end it and go to the green room. The human canvas jury is not "fake" we are encouraged to say something about every tattoo, editing can make a canvas look more vicious than the intention but again it's entertainment TV.
It's a fun show with amazing artist, but remember they are not just showcasing thier talent It's a competitive game. And each artist has to choose how they want to play, that doesn't make it fake. The tattoos are real and the pressure can make amazing artist not put out their best work. My husband is the sweetest man alive but he's a huge survivor fan and went into the show with a strategy, knowing it's a game, and there is only one winner 🤷‍♀️that worked very well for him.
Fans should just enjoy the content.

Thanks for the info! It’s hard to know what info coming out is true, because everyone is looking for a payout. More outlandish comments from previous ink masters, the more views they’ll get. Your comment seems the most true to me, because you have nothing to lose or gain from a YT comment. Thanks so much for being a canvass and your spouse for being a master, bringing some entertaining tattoo-related reality show, into our homes! ❤️

🤫 That commenter that said the competitors on the show were just characters, that might be true considering the cameras will mostly focus on people that are more interesting, so there might have been some tattooers that deliberately played a character so that they could get more camera time, like Saint Mark acting as the villain for the season he was in. But besides that, after I got more into tattooing I realized how many well establish tattoo artist actually competed in that show, like a lot of tattooers knew who Saint Mark, and Jesse Smith, and clean rock one was even before they went on that show. So I don’t really agree that the competitors were just characters, considering there were actual legendary and well established tattoo artists competing in that show, but I would say that the way they edit the show definitely made some people seems like characters.

That’s the problem with every show now a days. You can’t actually have a real competition with everything being real and not scripted or fake. It’s so annoying how every show has some sort of script.

I recently binge watched A LOT of ink master. I'm up to season 5. I've noticed SOOOOO much sexism. For instance, in the season 4 finale the female canvases had to wear thongs and Dave was making comments about how they should turn around (because they had no shirt) but the male canvas got to wear shorts.

I watch Ink Master before I got my tattoo done, it did not match at all with the reality, my tattoo artist is hilarious and a good laugh. It made the first experience so much better. I would say tho all that the show did for me is give me a better understanding of what I was getting into.

Yes, yes yes! Solid analysis Celle, bullseye! Totally agree with you about putting back the focus on art, composition, cold theory, techniques and etc and less cheap dramas of non tattoo related stuff. There's a fantastic opportunity with this show to discover new artists, lear tricks and learn more about the industry, I hope they have learned they lesson and won't go back into that cheesy drama crap.

While the show is probably all bullshit, why do you describe Jessica's statement as "it might be true" but Tyler's as "brutally honest"?

    • @laurens3857
      @laurens3857 2 года назад +28

I think she was implying Jessica’s sounds like she’s being polite and hers sounds in opposition to Tyler’s where is being brutal and open about what he has to say. I think the “it might be true” statement is just a segway to bring up Tyler’s brutal statements. I don’t necessarily think she is saying one statement is more or less accurate than the other.

Would you maybe like to do a video about getting all / a lot of tattoos from the same artist vs. getting tattooed by many different artists? I struggle a bit between wanting to find „my“ artist who I trust and who will fulfill all my tattoo wishes, but on the other hand there‘s the idea of „collecting“ tattoos by many different artists, to make my body somewhat of an art gallery, because I find that concept so cool.

I first watched ink master when I was 15 and dreaming about becoming a tattoo artist and it totally turned me off from wanting to become one because it gave me such a false representation of what tattoo artists are like and what the culture is overall. I thought everyone would be dramatic and petty and egotistical. As I got older and started getting tattoos I realized that ink master is far from a realistic representation and I'm back on track to learning to tattoo after meeting so many friendly and kind artists. But man I wish I didn't have that as my first exposure to the world of tattooing because I might have not been immediately turned off from it for years

The judges inconsistencies drove me nuts. Made it apparent that they wanted to keep an artist over another. DC villain episode, the artist that got kicked, switched Two Faces sides but did a super accurate picture besides, where the guy that did poison ivy took full creative license and made a green cartoon stayed. Ether they followed the guide lines or they didn't. They kept the artist that provided the most drama.

I have a bunch of tattoos. I can picture everyone of the artists that did them being on Ink Master. The look, the lingo, the salt at criticisms. That's the one thing the show captures that "real". The thing about the show that bugs me if it's real is the way they try and screw the canvas, the other artists I mean. Giving a style or whatever to someone they know sucks at it. I get it, buy the ticket, take the ride, but that's evil lol

The one thing I keep wondering about is, how can most of these canvases think that they can get such incredibly intricate tattoos in such little time? It bothers me that none of the producers sit them down and TELL THEM brutally, that their expectations are dream world unrealistic in the time given.

    • @coolguyhino92
      @coolguyhino92 2 года назад

....because that's the point. A LOT of the canvases had extravagantly lofty expectations... because the producers literally sat them down and TOLD THEM, "These artists are here to be challenged. Do NOT let them convince you to change location/position/style/size etc. "
They're encouraged to he a hard ass.(though some canvases were more than civil, agreeable, understanding, etc. but most if not all canvases were given '''''permission''''' to be a heel if they wanted to.)
never forget. if you're watching A.N.Y.T.H.I.N.G. that's even *remotely* "reality TV", and you find yourself getting furious at things...know you're doing exactly what the producer wants. Manufactured tension is everywhere. Even if the stars are unaware/uninvolved.

I constantly see people mentioning re-occurring characters and drama all the time, it seems to be what they’re aiming for with their show. Is creating meme-able reality tv show moments

I don't believe for a minute that some producer fed Dave Navarro every, single word he was allowed to say. I've been a major fan of his for many, many years, and from absolutely everything I've ever read, seen or heard, Dave Navarro has some serious integrity. He is also super empathetic and compassionate. Tyler Nolan is the only artist I've ever heard who said it was totally scripted, and he seems butt hurt because he wasn't good enough to win. I'm sure a lot of it is scripted because it's reality tv; however, I do not believe Dave Navarro would agree to be on a show where he had no ability to speak his mind or share his own opinion at all. That's just not the type of person he seems to be, and he also dislikes authority way too much to shut his mouth, play a part, pretend he agrees with everything he's spoon fed, etc., especially regarding a subject he's so passionate about. Tattoos are a major part of his life and they mean something to him, and I just have a hard time believing he'd ever be that big of a sell out. That has never been his MO. Funny how contestant after contestant says the show is somewhat scripted but not completely, yet Tyler, alone, stands up to say it's "99% scripted". He's a sore loser who's mad because his skills weren't up to par with some of the other artists. He had a bad attitude throughout the entire season, he always had a totally overinflated ego that he couldn't ever seem to justify, and he stayed way longer than he should have.
