    Using sharpie oil markers for years and very good. Noticed of recent a few things. A sign on metal outlined with black oil marker - ended up “ chalking” after 5 years. Would rub off black on hand. Looked up oil paint vs enamel and yes oil paint will chalk over years. This was done on outdoor project lettering on old truck door. Still researching great video

    The regular sharpie on wood dries out faster because the wood is porous and also sharpies dry up fairly quickly if the cap is off to long, even if you are writing.

    For an application onto Kydex which is a thermoplastic with a very fine texture on it (think light-medium sandpaper) which would you recommend, oil, acrylic, or regular sharpie(for the black)? It needs to have staying power, it's going on something to be worn. On a texture like that will the lines still have straight edges? Would these work with a stick on stencil, or would it bleed becsuse of the texture ? Also which spreads more evenly? If I had to do an inch wide swath but with fine edges, which appears more solid, and not like multiple lines next to each other? Any brand or type you could recommend for this application? Thank you very much for making this video. I basically just need black and neon green, but a good variety would be nice for future products. Thanks again.

  • @WillJBailey
    @WillJBailey 4 года назад +1

    Regular sharpies are made with a highly fluid solution of dyes in alcohol-based solvents which dry through absorption and evaporation. If you use them on raw absorbent surfaces like wood they will be quickly sucked dry. Oil-based markers are a more viscous suspension of pigment in oil and alcohol solvents. They dry much less by absorption and evaporation and more by oxidation. They bond on top of the surface of the wood and harden, which is why they're more efficient. I'm just about to release a video all about this, and the chemistry of inks in general if you're interested.

White background with ability for placing magnets is the real goal. I tried using Sharpie permanent marker but found that the Expo dry erase markers, when writing over the Sharpie, took it right off when wiping clean. • @WelcometotheWoodsBlog

      The oil-based will be the most durable and even though polycrylic is water based, I still think the oil-based sharpie will stick to it just fine. If I were you I'd test on a scrap piece of wood that you have poly on (dried at least 24 hours) then do a scratch test. For something as important as your wedding guest book, you don't want it to get ruined!

I ended up purchasing a large whiteboard on one side and black board on the other side from home depot, and I cut it in half to use each side. Luckily, I tested all my new markers on the sides that weren't going to be used first before decorating, but I am curious now as to how you can remove the oil-based sharpie the easiest? If anyone can help me, it would be GREATLY appreciated! Because I would like to use to to outline my calendar since it doesn't erase easily, but I want to make sure I can get it off in the future if I decide to switch up what I want on my blackboard side (and it's not like your typical chalk board, I'm not entirely sure what material it is, or if it's just a rough plastic)

      Wait 24 hours before hand washing. It should be safe now! Some people call them markers some call them pens, it's the same product.

    Would you recommend oil based paint pens on leather shoes?

      Yes, I think they should adhere to the leather and be fairly durable. Let me know how it goes!

    Are the oil based sharpie pens good for leather( sneakers) or are there better options?

    • @WelcometotheWoodsBlog
      @WelcometotheWoodsBlog  4 года назад

      They should hold up if you use them to decorate leather sneakers. I've tried numerous paint pens designed for fabric and I think the oil based sharpie hold up better.

    If the paint you used on the wood was water based, the ink would soften the paint and muck up the nib so they get stopped up

    Oil based paint pens work better for marking lumber, tar paper, and concrete, as well as steel when doing fabrication work or working on a building. For surfaces that will get painted, stained, or left as is, orange chalk lines and carpenter's pencils are better. On hard smooth surfaces, marks from markers can easily be removed with alcohol or other solvents.
