    I own a 1965 Sunn tube amp head, pre-model numbers. It was hand made in Conrad Sundholms garage. No one knows what it is worth but it sounds and records amazing...

      NashBeach , I've heard that Leslie West used a Sunn PA head to record "Mississippi Queen" . Have you tried that riff ? Could it have been a amp like yours ?

    • @donrutter6765
      @donrutter6765 4 года назад

      You can always change resistor/capacitor values in the preamp/tone stack to get more breakup and more tone. If that doesnt get you there add another gain stage. Sunn amps converted to guitar are one of the best guitar tones of the 70's.

    I have an RCA VICTOR MI-12291 PA from a school. The front panel has about a dozen switches so you could access different rooms or sets of rooms. Speakers are attached by screw terminals and have multiple ohm taps. I used if for my first band PA. It uses four 807 power tubes and puts out about 100 watts.

  • @stephenlennartz3466

    I've had some odd ones over the years ... especially early on. These included:
    - A Gibson with the knobs on top and 4 10" speakers. I remember the smoke pouring out of the back of that amp. LOL.
    - A Haynes combo with 2 12" speakers. I think it was solid state? Nice clean to it.
    - A West Fillmore head with matching 4 12 cabinet cause Mark Farner had one! That thing weighed A TON! I don't recall the sound being particularly good ... but it sure looked cool.
    Memories ...

    Another vote for the Pathfinder. Just the right frequencies, clear but not harsh. Nice for a band out of the way of singer etc. I would like to hear a fuzz into it. BUT the biggest shocker is the Quilter perfect to sit on a pedal board, especially with the effects loop. One power cord, one guitar cable, one speaker cable...

    I love all things Electro-Harmonix/Sovtek so that was definitely my favorite. Plus it broke up really nice! I have a not so common amp (not too weird) that I love to play. A 1970 Fender Bantam Bass with original working Yamaha trapezoid speaker

    • @billnelson9413
      @billnelson9413 5 лет назад +2

      Aaron Tackett I have the Bantam too! It sounds like what I wish a Super Reverb sounds like and you can jump the channels because they’re in phase. I use it with a reissue Fender reverb unit and it’s unbeatable. I love the speaker too.

      I keep it pretty low most of the time but I love using it more than any pedal. It really gives me a feeling of goodness. I also have a Fender Musicmaster Bass amp that used to belong to Mary Kaye, as well as a Vibro Champ so depending on the room or my mood I can use the reverb tank with any of those. I’ve got other stuff but those are my favorites. I actually want another reverb unit to switch between lol

    I built a funky little 5w single ended amp using 6sn7 preamp tubes bootstrapped into a Pentode like configuration and added a feedback circuit based of the old fuzzface pedals. Also put an ampeg flavored baxandall stack in it and its all in an old reel to reel box complete with the og 6x9 speaker. Quite a strange amp and sounds pretty neat too!

    Wow, listening to the 10" and 12" speakers is really instructive! My favourite amp was the Quilter. It sounds awesome and it fits in your hand; enough said. "Kid A" by Radiohead? It's epic, but when it came out some of my friends (and many other people) stopped liking Radiohead because they thought they were too weird. I know they're idiots, but it might count. In any case, if you haven't listened to Kid A for a while, you can do yourself a favour and remind yourself how good it is.
    And, yay! "The Sovtek Episode" :-))))

  • @harveycan5820
    @harveycan5820 4 года назад

    The first amp grabbed me a lot, it was so Fuzzenstein... The Quilter surprised me it sounded so good. The Newcombe was my favorite, pretty easily.
    Odd album-- I am sure I could do better but right now I am ruminating on Vendetta by The Brood. This was a 90s girl band, all in leather like punk bikers. The sound is kind of surf punk, driven by a cheesy Vox organ, but the songs are just great. Like the House band at a women's prison...
    Odd amp - - in 1965, I wanted to be The Beatles so bad I "strummed" a long wooden block like a guitar, and sang along to Meet the Beatles and Beatles '65 on my little red Mattel Show n Tell record player (very odd - - look it up on eBay!). My mom took me to a local music store in Hawthorne CA and bought me an antique white Fender Mustang and an amp for $106.00. The amp was a St. George, made in China for a company in LA. The logo was a Knight's head. It had sparkle grill cloth and black tolex. It was probably the size of a Princeton. I cannot for the life of me remember how it sounded. In 1969, I traded it to twin bothers I knew for a couple hundred baseball cards from 1950-52, probably would be worth 15 grand now. Anyway - - St George. Very rarely seen.
    Great vid, maybe my favorite so far. Good humor. I liked "The amp is so light it's falling through my hand". Maybe your hand would fall through the amp?

    They were a melodic hardcore band for almost 10 years, but then they decided not to make that music anymore and BOOM! They totally flipped the script in 2017 when they released a shoegaze album, entitled Rare!

    • @JulianA-tr6pt
      @JulianA-tr6pt 5 лет назад +2

      Model 8810. It's *kinda* like a champ, if only for the tube line-up. It's kinda a foreign design, as far as common guitar amps go. The volume knob comes BEFORE the input tube, it has negative feedback into the first triode stage, the tone controls change the negative feedback signal, and certain versions of it have a strange wiring of the 6v6's cathode, wiring it to one of the output transformer taps, creating another type of feedback circuit.

      @@paulcowart3174 Well, not sure about the 168 but the 166 is just the whole assembled combo of the 8810 amp + speaker cab. The amp is always the model 8810, regardless of whether it came in a 166 or 168, or was ripped out and sold separately, as they commonly are on eBay. There are like 3-4 different versions of the 8810 though. Most of the variations are within the power supply.

    Josh, I actual have and enjoy "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts." I love experimental music, especially field recordings and "found sounds." My love started with the Minutemen's Double Nickels on the Dime" and their live CCR cover of "Don't Look Now" with the great background conversation...it's distracting and I hate it...but I can't help but listen. In the same weird vein, I propose Lou Reed's "Metal Machine Music." If one can sit through this album at full volume, one can listen to anything. Weirdest amp I've had was a cool 100 watt Danelectro DS head. I took it in for service to a local guitar shop. The service guy got sick and never finished the job. I called and called and asked about the guy, but the guitar shop said he was an independent and they wouldn't responsible for his work or loss of equipment. The store soon was out of business. Very cool sounding amp.

    Hey Josh, I’m loving these Vlogs have been a huge fan for years, first pedal I bought was the first run of the Panther. I have some ideas for future videos if it’s something you would be interested in doing.
    1. A history/tutorial of your drive pedals, maybe with Stu G going over the kilt and some of your collaboration ideas.
    2. A backstory to some “failed” projects or pedals that were not as successful as well as how you overcame some of those hurtles as a company
    3. A vlog on running pedals through effects loops and some practical setups and completely unique ways of running.
    4. As you’ve mentioned in several videos, more Fuzz education
    5. Do another gear selection video with some of your favorite expensive gear next to a board of your favorite sleeper pedals.
    Again, loving the information you put out on the Vlogs, can’t wait to hear more.

    I'm sad you didn't break out the "Oliver" combo, which is like an Ampeg Port-a-Flex that unpacks itself.
    Also neglected is the "Excelsier Americana" which has two EL-34s powering a pair of 12s AND an EL-84 powering a 5" speaker, the latter being used only for the reverb circuit. There was one on St. Louis Craigslist not that long ago for a shockingly low (Fender Deville range) price.
    Favorite "weird" album? The Resident's "Commercial" album; forty tracks, each about a minute long and consisting of a "verse" and a "chorus." The liner notes tell you to listen to each track three times to replicate the experience of a pop song.
    For what it's worth: I'd rather listen to "Bush of Ghosts."

Get rid of the negative feedback loop and (if it has it) the ultra-linear transformer and you are good to go!

    Hey! That first amp! I own one. It is a Voice of Music 8810. They came out of a speaker box which was often connected to a tape machine (reel to reel I believe). Essentially, a PA amp. I have schematics, and I basically redesigned mine entirely, as it ran on the edge and had some burnt up parts inside. The output transformer is actually directly below the power transformer, but on the inside of the very cramped chassis. Some have small output transformers (I think the later cream colored ones like in the video do), but my 1959 grey one has a pretty large one that fills at least 1/3 of the chassis interior.
    My main amp, an ~18 watt Stromberg Calson, was also originally a PA amp, but I did a conversion, and it really turned out to be something special.

      Neat circuit, but I decided to rebuild mine (different chassis too - original was too tight and very noisy) closer to a Fender champ which has higher gain. The VOM's tone circuit uses a decent amount of negative feedback, sent back to the first gain stage which really limits preamp distortion. The stock tone circuit also isn't voiced for guitar, so it doesn't change the sound all that much, although it is interesting.
      The stock stromberg circuit can also be found online - it is the Signet 22 aka the SAU-22. I own 2 now and redesigned the circuits entirely. Instead of having two 12ax7 inputs for multiple mics, I wired them cascade. One is kinda a voxy/marshally circuit with a TMB tone stack while the other amp has a preamp similar to a Brown 6g3 deluxe, but with a framus mid knob.

      @JulianA-tr6pt Год назад

      @@giannipalmisano8071 similar to the last comments I posted, I don't know of you're asking for the original amplifiers schematic or a schematic of what I did to the amp. Click the link in my last comment for the VOM 8810 original schematic.
      After I modified it, I basically removed the negative feedback winding on the output transformer, converted the input 12AX7 stage to a more traditional cathode bias style (like a fender amp), and tweaked some resistor values to drop the B+ and run the tube at a safe level. I think I used two 750ohm resistors off of the power transformer before the rectifier. It originally used two 300ohms, but those aren't in that version of the schematic.
      As of now, the amplifier was completely rebuilt into a different chassis and the schematic is similar to the Fender 5f2A tweed Princeton.

    A bit late here, but my favorite “odd” record might be Warning by Green Day. While Minority was a hit that endures into their sets today, the rest of the material seems largely abandoned. It was by far their least successful record from 94-09, but it showed their range as songwriters. They achieve some really sweet guitar tones not unlike the beginning of the Satellite amp demo, and Misery is an outright folk tale with inspiration taken from Italian folk music, mariachi and surf rock. Worth a listen for sure!

    My favorite amp here was probably the Pathfinder, followed closely by the Mig-80. In terms of favorite "weird" albums, for me it's probably Bad Religion's second album, 1983's Into the Unknown. They basically bailed from their punk beginnings and made a prog rock album that NO ONE liked at the time. It's since become a bit of a classic amongst BR nerds, and they even repressed it on vinyl for a box set collection of their early albums about 8-9 years ago. "Chasing the Wild Goose" is probably my favorite track on that album.
