    Great car. One correction: It was released in 84 as an 85 model. I got mine in late 84. I LOVED that car. Especially when I beat a 911 down the westbound side of Mt Eagle going from Chattanooga to Nashville. Of course, had I been driving the 911, the Toyota wouldn't have won, lol! He was really proud of himself when he finally passed me on the straight at the bottom of the mountain. He couldn't even keep up on the last set of esses before, though. I was putting more space between us on every turn right up the to the last straight at the bottom.

    Karl, thanks for posting this. I had one of these new back in 85. 1 year into owning it I was awarded a company car so I gave it to my then wife. It was a great car. I really loved the styling including the pop up headlights. I recall it was a bitch during the winter so I popped on some winter tires given it was a rear wheel drive car. Anyway I'm now driving a Porsche Boxster S and an Audi S3. Carry on Karl and keep up the good work.

    Ahhh.....so this was the beautiful car I saw parked in the parking garage of Sac State. I'm so glad to get to see the whole car in this video because I only got to see the back of the car at the time while picking up my sister. I would love to have that car or own one. I knew what it was from first glance without ever seeing it before ever! I would love to see it in person again. I was lucky enough to see the car rolling and hear the engine roar through the parking lot as it was leaving. And again I only saw the back of the car while it passed from the back when we were already parked. I had to explain to my sisters why I got so excited out of no where and why I was going so crazy for such and "ugly" car. Haha girls that aren't into cars pufff....

      You had already paid 2.5k+ registration, taxes and probably smog you were already over 3k in for sure...I'm sure a local "mom and pop" auto shop would've done the head job for under 1k, if you would've fixed it and didn't wanna deal with it anymore you could've easily sold a running GTS for 6-7k if it was a coupe or easily for 10k for a hatch, more than double your money back 🤔

    Old video, but one small correction: The factory LSD in the GTS model isnt a 2 way. Its not really "any" way. An LSD with a "way" on it refers to an LSD that has a cam/pinion set up inside, that increases lock up depending on which direction torque is being applied (Whether accel or decel). A "1 way" applies extra on accel, a 1.5 applies extra on accel, and "half" as much (due to a less aggressive cam profile) on decel, and a 2 way is full extra lock up on accel and decel.
    Its not entirely "unfair" to *compare* the factory LSD to a 2 way- But it is notably different.
    Again, the LSD lacks any cam/pinion and doesnt give any "extra" lock up- What it instead has is a set of springs that push out on the clutches/discs equally at all times (thus the "comparison"). But the break away torque never really increases or decreases, its simply limited by what the springs can provide.
    This is also a huge reason why factory LSDs in the ae86s tend to suck. Even when theyre rebuilt, even if youre using shimmed kits with more aggressive springs.. they kinda suck. Exceeding the lock up of the springs is never super difficult, and they wear out *really* quickly.

      It was, but honestly almost all the GTSs I've bought in the past and the ones I ran into at the junkyard back in the early 2000s all had LSDs I'll say the vast majority of GTSs in California are LSD equipped 👍

    • @CaptainDijango
      @CaptainDijango 8 лет назад +2

      marc mainly rust under the car and engine fucking up. I was quite naïve when I bought the 86 I was a bit too exited since I searched for an 86 for a while so I gotten the first I've seen I tried it a bit on the day I bought it seemed fine but what I did not do was check for rust under the car. I did not check for rust because I thought everything was alright with her since she still had 4 months until the next service check. I found out about it only when i went to see why my 86 was doing the rattling noise under the car that seemed like pebbles hitting the car from underneath even when there were no pebbles on the road. the car was rusted all over under it and had corroded to the point of having holes in it basically the car had some pebbles just hitting in the car that went in trough the corrosion holes it and was just cosmetically fixed from the outside so mongs like me just buy it without checking (note that the car did not have any visble rust from the outside). I thought i could still fix those rust problems untill the engine just blew for me the engine or broke rather than blew. The engines cranksaft litteraly broke one day after i pushed a bit more gas while riding outside the city on a dirt road so after that all my hopes of fixing the car went to the toilet and i gave up on it. I did swap the engine from another car but it was driving all weird after i did so i gave up on it. It was fun while it lasted tho so i will buy a new one if i can find one no Levin tho... that 86 model for me is ugly af

    is it an AE86 or an AE88? For discussion

    • @xwewillberememberedx
      @xwewillberememberedx 6 лет назад +1

      Its an ae86. An ae88 is still an ae86. Its got ae86 stamped right on the chassis. The ae88 myth was started by Mr.Regular by pointing out how the vin said ae88. He forgot to mention that the ae86 in Japan simply didn’t have any vin at all. Only chassis codes. Only US has vin numbers. Both are ae86s. If you believe the ae86 vs ae88 logic, then you must believe the US never got the aw11 either, because the aw11 had aw15 vin in US. But they are both aw11 chassis. So they are aw11s. And this video is about an ae86. A good reference is Progression D’s video about jdm vs usdm ae86s.

      +Brian SPIESS removable steering wheel = theft deterrent

    • @sigmaprojects

      +Brian SPIESS Some steering wheels feel better than others. Also reducing the size of the steering wheel increases effort, but also increases steering response because you're moving the rack more with less steering wheel distance.
      The 80's Toyota steering wheels are nice for a museum piece, but an aftermarket wheel feels just much better.

      I only have the quick release on there cause it's hard to get in and out of the bucket seat with the wheel position. The steering wheel is actually the same size as a stock one. I'm a short guy so the steering wheel gets in the way of my legs when I shimmy out. Not really my daily anymore either I bought another car.

      +ThUg_LiFe you ever consider that they were removed? haha

    • @midnightmenu
      @midnightmenu 9 лет назад +1

      They have been removed and put back on. The car has been resprayed without them on but it is a true GTS, I like murakami mirrors over the big bulky ones and I remember those as an SR5 thing too
