I have a 1970 Datsun 510 that's been my daily drive for nearly 28 years. It has a L20B with a mid-range cam, a header, 2 1/4 inch exhaust, a two barrel Weber side-draft carburetor, a 5 speed transmission from a 1979 Datsun 200SX, and a radiator from a 1989 Volkswagen Golf. It doesn't have the greatest fuel economy but it gets me to where ever I want to go. My Grandfather owned the 510 before I got it from him. That car is a part of me and I can't imagine life without it. Raul Toledo, that's an awesome 510 you have.
What a great story! I had a mint condition metallic brown '77 Datsun S30 280z that my mom gave me when she passed away from cancer. We lived on a canyon road and she taught me how to drive fast in the canyons. I put on a small Formuling France steering wheel, a Monza exhaust, one inch lowered springs, Koni adjustable struts, comp. sway bars and a set of gold and silver American Racing wheels. Man, could that car handle and the motor was great. I have so many stories I could tell about that car. But, one night going down the canyon to the gym a kid ran a stop sign and I t-boned him at 50 mph. It totaled the car, although I must say, it held up a lot better than I ever would have though. Enough for me not to get even a small bump or bruise. Apart from the days I lost my mom and dad, losing that car was the saddest day of my life. I really miss that car, my parents and the good times that we had in the car. This is the first time I've written about it, and that was almost 30 years ago.
I like this guys attitude. It doesn't matter what modification or what car it is on he gives them all a thumbs up.
Yep Raul is a super chill dude
He's a true car enthusiast!
Thanks Chris for your fan enthusiasm and fun video of your '72 Datsun 510. I had a '72 Datsun 510, August '78 to July '82. Bought for $250 in NH, I travelled around the US on my round about way to college in Washington State: Down the East coast to NC in Nov then across the South, then up the West Coast, travelling Nov-Dec '78. Most often I slept in the car, slipping into a sleeping bag in the driver's seat and leaning sideways on stuff including a cushion on the passenger seat. Rev-happy as you know, '510'a fun to drive. Had in college, then drove/ moved to NM with it to start teaching, for Zuni Indians. Like almost all '510's outside CA, eventually the '510 rusted too much; for mine a suspension support sheared off, making an awful grinding noise when coming to a stop sign/no welder would agree to try to fix it. I soon bought a fun '75 Datsun Pickup July '82 with a camper cap and alloy wheels... Still have dreams where the '510 isn't gone, but returns for "One more drive...". Stock, the '510's original 1600cc engines, were great smooth revving engines, among the first low-cost OHC engines available in America. Chris, partly because of his age, overcredits recent goings-on (Jay Leno,...) and under-credits/ doesn't accurately know 510's history from the '70's and '80's, as much as, as a fan, I'd think he'd like to know. While 'a sleeper', slowly gaining wider recognition, there's been a -in-the-know recognition of 510's from the '70's on. In the early 70's the BRE Racing Team, recognized their tunability and (not by chance) resemblance to BMW's (4 wheel indep suspension, & look) and won the US Racing Sedan Championship over BMW's and Porsche's and... (See You-Tube for video). In the '70's enthusiasts knew that 510's used many of the same parts as Z's, being basically 2/3 of Z (4cyl vs 6 cyl), with some parts interchangeable (but at lower cost than Z parts). A few years ago I learned that Nissan-Datsun designers deliberately produced a car way better than people in America were expecting: E.g., a high performance car at an economy car price, and super reliable too. The Datsun 510, 240Z and Toyota Corolla spearheaded the transformation of the Japanese import car market and view in the U.S. from dismissive condescension in the late '60s to admiration, acceptance and wide popularity. And the Datsun 510 and Z engines were partly based on an early '60's Mercedes Benz engine. Among pioneering features for the
U.S. market the 510's and 240Z's had is 4 wheel independent suspension, and an OHC engine, and super reliability... Honda Civics joined the moves about 1976. For 510's The nickname "Poor Man's BMW" has been aptly nicknamed since I think sometime in the '70's Thanks again for keeping the spirit of Datsun '510's alive and well!
+Carl Cushman Hybels --Dear Raul Toledo, sorry I misheard your name as Chris. --Got it now. Thanks again, Raul. Thanks for helping keep the spirit and actuality of Datsun 510's rev-happy and fun alive!
I have a '72 datsun 240z and i can truly say i can relate with this. Especially the part about older people stopping to tell me how they used to own a 240z. Great video
When I had my 1967 Cougar people would do the same to me.
Awesome video, thanks for keeping the 510 legend alive. The 510 has special place in my heart, my dad bought a '71 new ($2100) when I was 6 yrs. old. Dad would take me for thrilling rides in the country, flat out on back roads. At age 10 I learned to drive in it. It started my long love affair with RWD standard trans. cars. At age 14 the car was rusted out, dad gave it to me and we used to drift it on gravel roads, Today I drive a '12 Mustang, it's a great car but I miss the more direct connection the old 510 with standard steering had with the road.
Great vid!
I have a '72 510 2 door, orange, KA24e w/Yamaha R1 carbs & EDIS4 Megajolt ignition, Watanabe type B with the same size/offset as your Longchamps.
You hit a lot of points bang-on:
- The old lady story, literally not a drive goes by w/o someone smiling/thumbs up/tell me their 510 memories
- It makes you smile everywhere you go. I drive mine lots.
- Too many memories to sell. My oldest son, who helped me rebuild my KA24e as a 12 y/o, is now old enough to learn to drive in it. Now he's autocrossing with me. Awesome memories for both of us - and I've got another 12 y/o son ready to join.
My 510 is literally part of the family. Best automotive purchase I ever made.
Nice , was talking to my old man earlier, he was an apprentice in 1968 >1972 in Nissan ireland, he worked on the production line building Datsun Violet& some Z's, he was a tool maker/fitter turner a highly skilled job, amazing now some enthusiasts are bringing the Datsun to life , Luv datsun
My first car was a 1970 510. Modded lightly but to this day... nearly 40 years later I LOVE that car! Thanks for keeping the heritage going 👍
Sold my 510 after owning it for 25 years. Good to see the fanaticism continues. Great to see a video like this
You are driving a truly legendary car , a car with a remarkable history.
we need more guys like this in the car culture. Thank you for your service as well!
+Dominick Ruiz Yes we do!
Love the 510 that's my birth year 72 and thank you for giving a shout out to the truck drivers cuz we sure do try to make our trucks look very pretty just like you guys with your cars takes a lot of time and effort and money love the 510 she is clean
i love his view, on how we should all respect eachother builds, American, euro, Japanese all alike. In the coming days with all the emissions crack downs, electric cars, autonomous driving tech. Car enthusiasts everywhere need unite to preserve our culture
preach it 👍👌✌
well said
@@abymondesir23 From Australia as well, John.
I just bought my 72 Datsun 510 4-door back in November. I LOVE IT! All stock, it runs, has near-perfect interior, but needs new paint and the body needs a little work. If anyone is considering buying one of these, DO IT NOW/SOON while they're still cheap. Like he said in the vid, they are starting to get popular and the price will go up.
really like this guys outlook on car culture, thumbs up for a great car, person, and awesome attitude
This was the car to have for a kid growing up in California in the late 70's/80's. These and the Ford/Mercury Capri.
Love the part when he talks about acknowledging other modified cars and acknowledging the effort that the person is putting towards their car, I have that same state of mind
Technically, the 510 was extremely popular when it came out... ridiculously so. But history is history. Love the build and that it actually looks like a car you're building yourself, even if there is shop help involved.
After all, if you drive a Datsun 510, and the headliner on your A pillar isn't falling off, do you really drive a Datsun 510?
--Fellow 510 owner.
this car seems like an absolute blast to drive
My grandmother went out and got a brand-new 69. Six months after i was born. She gave it to me in 85 when i got my drivers license. I still have it.
I thought the 510 was the first "hot" import to hit the states? First JP car that smoked the world in its class, these have been BIG for decades but they just recently sky rocketed in value. I love them!!!
My neighbor and his roommate have two of those cars and everytime they drive by its music to my ears
Sick video!!! Really gives me the confidence to keep fine tuning my 510. Recently bought an 81' 2door. Which I might sell in the future for an early 70s 510. I totally understand when an older person tells you they used to own a Datsun. Haha I love it.
LizzerdLegz27, I am almost 60 and I want another one! I am looking for a project and they are hard to find here in Australia, wish I had not sold the one I had in the 80's.
Cheers from John.
Exact same way I got introduced to classic JDM back in the early 90's. As a kid I got a banzai magazine with a free option DVD in the back of it. Game over.
some of the best car mini-docs I've seen thus far
+TMAC MC Check out Petrolicious and /DRIVE TUNE Episode those guy are really good. We look up to them are biggest mentors.
Funny he mentioned jay lenos garage because that's what introduced me to the 510 but now I'm obsessed and want one so bad! One of the most beautiful and simple cars.
+CJSchecter96 The three box isn't a bad design, surprised no one wants to try and make a new car with the same design principle.
+Ali Ahadi I know I love it. I never knew the name but I loved the style. I wish they would do a new car with that design or if bmw did it like the 2002. Maybe Alfa could make a little affordable gtv based around the new fiat 124 platform. I would give it a shot.
CJSchecter96 Yea Nissan toyed with the idea of doing a retro car that would be a reincarnation of the 510 with the three box style, but didn't seem like anything came of it. The other benefit of a 3 box style is that you generally have decent head space in the back seat since it's not sloping down so quickly.
+Ali Ahadi yeah it really is a great design. And it can be really reserved or sporty. Surprised it's not all that popular.
CJSchecter96 yea same. It might be from the 90's on many companies have just thought to do more aerodynamic appearances and think a boxy design would look "dated." It was an understandable trend from the 80's to 90's.
We had a 1973 Datsun 610, when I was just beginning to drive, back in the '70's. It was bigger and heavier than the 510 (2500lbs), but had the same great independent suspension as the 510. It handled great! I wasn't aware at the time, but 610's were used for racing, after they quit making the original, aka: real, 510.
Everyone hated to see the legendary Datsun 510 go, so a few years later, Nissan brought it back, but unfortunately, it was a Datsun 510 in name only. If I remember correctly, it didn't have the independent rear suspension, which was key to a Datsun 510 actually being a Datsun 510!
We need more open hearted car guys like him
For some reason around 7 min really hit me. Cool video, this guy is a car guy just like me 👍🏽
this is really good. props on the build, please make more videos!!!
I definitely agree with his mindset on opening up cars. Great production, great work, keep up the awesome videos guys.
+Pavin Kang Thanks for the support
The import car culture in America needs more people with this attitude that the guy in the video has!!!
Exactly, respecting everyone's build regardless of what it is.
+Shaun Easterbrook Thanks for seeing the right vision!
Best attitude in the world. Love this guy and his amazing build
Cool Beans ! - in 1975, I had a '73 610 with a 1,000$ motor built by George Alderman Racing in New Castle, Del. Btw, the 610 is a very attractive body shape ...
Although i'm more into old cars in stock form, I think is very cool when people customize their vintage cars.
My sister had a 1968 Datsun 2000 sport coupe; I guess they're pretty rare now; what a fun car...
Didn't the 510 come out way before the BMW e30, I thought it resembles a BMW 2002... Great video nonetheless! Your guys' production is getting so much better!
Correct:)
+Jay Bosslingo In our next episode we have some new tricks up are sleeve's
+Jay Bosslingo they pretty much release this along side with the 2000 GTR. i would not be surprise if the 510 is only a scale down version of the GTR
+Jay Bossing according to wiki you are correct. 510 ran from 1968-1973 and the E30 first released in 1982.
+Mouse Click What?... No.
saw this datsun past saturday in downtown sd with gold wheels in the back awesome car!!!
I just found your channel and i wanted to thank you for doing a great job on these short documentaries. You got me staying up late, lovely stories. keep it up guys!!
I admire your respect for other people's build lol. I try being humble, and I try keeping my words to myself whenever I see a honda civic or a toyota corolla roll by and it's extremely loud and you and me both know that all they have is a cheap ebay exhaust tip.
I CAN TOTALY RELATE TO WAKING UP AND SMILING ABOUT MY CAR..... TURBOS ARE EXCELLENT. KEEP TUNING PEOPLE!!!!!! dont let the car culture die EVER! NIce 510 LOVE IT one of my faves, like a hakosuka gtr
Clean car! That sr swap sounds super healthy even without a tune.
thumbs up, man. you seem to have a good attitude about imports. I've thought about selling my 240sx but I don't think it'll ever happen because of the memories.
510 for life 32yrs still have two. SD 619
👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾 love these videos man. Definitely worth the time you put into them!
+Kwezzy Thanks for acknowledging how much time we put in to our videos! We wish we could put one out every week.
I REGRET NOT BUYING A 510 IN THE 80'S..
MY FATHER OWNED A DATSUN 210 .THE FIRST CAR I DROVE AT THE AGE OF 14YRS OLD
Awesome, I have a '72 Datsun 510 station wagon, KA24DE powered. Didn't know anything about it when I bought it. It was my first car. Only knew that it was on Forza Motorsport 3 haha. Honestly, I cannot imagine a better car for a car enthusiast
a datsun 510 stationwagen is a very rare car. most of them rusted away. within 10 years its worth double the price if its still in a reasenable good shape :)
Great looking swap! Love the stance and the color you used on the valve cover. Good shit. 👍😎
Datsun (Nissan) did a really good job of having stylish cars back. my favorites being the Z, Roadster, and the 510. they made pretty good mini trucks as well
I do the same thing I drive a C5 vette Z06 and even if I see a nice civic or 240sx or even a low rider sure not my style but that person enjoys cars just like I do and cars guys for the part are good people we give back. Our local show made 3k for honor flights for veterans to see the memorials in D.C. I love the car community for that and the sick rides I get to see. And I love that everyone does it different. Drive safe my friends
+Scott F Yeah we need to be more positive to people's builds and if people don't something positive say don't say nothing at all. We have enough dicks in this world we don't need them in the car community too.
Ive seen this owner drive by so many times on the 5 and we would acknowledged each other when i had my s13.
Brake upgrade I’d be scared in that thing, even my 79’ e12 had disks in the rear.
Any ways that’s a badass ride bro, my older brother had two of those I remember being picked up from elementary in the 510 he had pure awesomeness
Incredible interview great footage and tastefully done car, this guy has an amazing personality to him and respect like he said we need more of this in the community not enough real enthusiasts just haters/idiots
Just saw this... Welcome home from the "sand box." Glad you're enjoying your car. :)

Just got that feeling again! LOL
You have a very positive outlook on things.
My mom had one of these. I used to take it every chance I got. Awesome car. CULT status. I drove this over my highly modified VW.
I know this is a six-year-old post but what I saw it because I've been in to datsun dimes for a long time also it looks like a Mini 1963 Chevy tunova and I'm a older guy that likes muscle cars but iPhone one also a 4 door Awesome cars keep up the good work
Beautiful car, and the guy is chill af
Great attitude. Makes me want to look up for any being sold.

Great video! Favorite car in the universe.
these cars are beautiful!!
These things were classics from the start
I had a '71 coupe as my first car, just like Leno's production manager. it wasn't as in quite as good a shape, but 125hp in a 1900 pound car. man I miss that car. best handling, fastest thing and porsche drivers hated me...
If I had that car, with that sound, you wouldn’t catch me with earbuds ever
HELL YEAH
+whatRUstupid1 Thanks!
Respect. Very humble
Beautiful car!
Wow. I could have sworn I've seen that car on SF Craigslist back in ~07-08 (when it was White). Looks great now!

MY DREAM CAR THE DATSUN 510
