It almost sounds like a 4 cylinder Honda engine and I never thought I'd be so fascinated by a car such as the Datsun 510 but that is one of the coolest and cleanest looking Datsun 510 sports cars I have ever seen. The color combo for me is the color combo I would have on the car.

@@harryshomegarage I tried flying an RC airplane maybe 10 years ago. I crashed it up so bad that it was mostly tape and hot glue by the time I was finally able to keep it in the air. I had fun with it for a few minutes then got it stuck in the top of a 70 foot tree. I didn't mess with RC again until about 2 years ago and discovered FPV drones. I've been flying those for a while and am about to buy a plane again. I'm sure from what I've learned with the drones that I can keep the plane in the air now. I also work in a composite shop and build the molds for carbon fiber racecar bodies. I repair the bodies and we also have a paint shop and do a lot of old classic cars and late model Ferraris and Lamborghinis. We have a 66 Mustang Shelby 350 fastback in there now.

    • @harryshomegarage
      @harryshomegarage 2 года назад

@@CarbonGlassMan Wow Holy smokes! FPV drones are way harder to fly so I'm sure you'll have no trouble with a plane now and the technology has also improved so should be a walk in the park 😉

FPV drones are so cool but take some mad skills! For our Ultra4 Bronco episode (ruclips.net/video/TnsC8Q2JWMc/видео.html), we purchased an FPV drone to keep up with the high speed of that car in the desert. My son actually flew it, but had only a few days of practice before the shoot. I was impressed he picked it up so quickly! I blame all the video games he's played 😂

SO COOL. AS A young Daddy, the USGS sent me from Menlo Park, to Denver to run a Section in the PhotoLab. My family grew by 1 and
thus we outgrew our 1972 Fiat Wagon. Comes the 1976 Datsun 510 Wagon. What a screamer and economical (as the Feds didn't
pay a lot) This thing was phenomenal in the SNOW too. The turning range is very short which was very handy.
But by age 30, the family growing again to 5 kids, (10 yrs and younger) the switch to a bigger wagon was needed.
I missed my 510 right away!! BUT ~~ I found a 1973 VW BUS. And that became another "love affair"!
It's very nice to see the 5 1 0 immortalized on NICOLE JOHNSON'S DETOUR. Nice Production. No Question!! Nice Smile TOO.

You just blew my mind. About 30 years ago my friend in Mt. View CA. had a 510 that he built for Laguna Seca...just like this car except for a roll cage. I was visiting him, he gave me the car for the weekend...not street legal. He put some license plates on it and I drove it for the weekend. Drove it to Monterey and it beat the shit out of me. I swear there wasn't springs or shocks...it was a stiffy. Quick, loud and crazy fun to drive. He had put an alarm on the car and while parked in Monterey it went off and I couldn't find a way to shut it off. Got a lot of dirty looks as I drove off, alarm blasting and fake plates on a illegal street car...good times. Love your show.

In 1971 I lived in a suburb of Sacramento and on rainy days I would see 3 510s in Brock racing livery doing donuts and 360s like a stunt team. I was 9 years old and thought they were the coolest thing ever. Many years later I had a broken clutch basket on my Yamaha RD 350 and was referred to a guy not far from where I had lived and seen the Datsuns. He welded up my basket and when I picked it up he showed me his shop. He was welding up 240z heads and re porting them. It was the coolest thing. I became a fabricator and have had and modded several Datsuns and Nissans. This was a fun episode. Ps. I want window openers like that! Mt Honda Element has those flip latch windows. I think there's a market.

    This 510 sounds awesome.
I've always been a big fan of the sporty Japene Datsuns, Mazda's, Mitsubishi's and Toyota's of the 70's.
It's sad they've all been forgotten and disappeared.
My respect go out to the builder/restorer. Bodywork is one thing but also puzzling the gearbox, engine and drivetrain together out of the NIssan/Datsun range is a lot of work.
But great to see that Datsun did the same as many other Asian and European economyboxes in that era.
Some research takes you a long way.

It was so fast I blew out the differentials. I raced an RX7 beat him off the line and then loss the rear end, coasted off the hwy to the exit ramp. He cought up and waved not knowing I loss my rear end. Such fun times. My boss had a 4 door wagon 510. I drove that every workday 60 miles round trip to the other office I managed. I would love to restore another 510. Great memories. Love Datsuns. Ez to fix too.

@@NicoleJohnsonsDetour Yes..I can see that they're maintained very nicely Nicole...but at least your's are still there... you know what I mean. Some woman go to far... for some reason they just keep plucking and plucking until there's nothing left. Your's are just right. They suit you. For example, look at Nancy Pelosi, she has to paint hers on. They're painted so high that on occasion, she looks like a surprised Michael Jackson. Personally, as long as they're not giant bush hogs or a uni-brow.... I'm good.
I keep watching because what you do is actually quite interesting. And the way you approach each builder with such genuine interest making it more about them than you is commendable. I like that. It doesn't hurt that we get to watch a beautiful, down to earth, cool chick who doesn't mind getting dirty that really seems to enjoy what she's doing either. You have a great concept. I've had a number of cars that I've built over the years and my girlfriends did not share my interest. They just liked driving in them. I had a 64 and a 66 Galaxy 500GT, 68 to 72 Chevelles, 72 Chevy half ton, 79 -81 Malibus and so on. The last one was an 81 Malibu, I changed the front clip to the double headlights like the El Camino and fancied it up with the IROC-SS Body kit. (Ground effects) That was a nice car. Now I just drive old F150's... they're getting harder to find in good shape now.

I painted it Monza red and it had a fully worked 1800 engine from a 180B and it sounded just like Harry's car and made me smile. Also went like hell and no matter how you drove it the gearbox and diff just took it. I taught my wife of 30 years to drive in the 1600 and had a lot of good times and memories. I wish I still have that car and have been looking but the price of a poor condition vehicle is Australia is overwelming. Maybe on day the stars will align? Great job Nicole, first time watching your channel and glad I did. I was hoping you would talk about the independent rear end, but that's okay. My very first car was a 1971 4-speed manual Datsun 510 4-door sedan, light yellow with a black vinyl top and black interior. I bought the car near SeaTac airport in 1975 from a women (she purchased the car brand new in downtown Seattle) who just got married and worked for the airlines. So needless to say the car had less than 9,000 miles on it. I had to work and save the money to buy the car and have enough for insurance. My Dad and I had been looking for cars that were less than $1,500, but this car was selling for $1,800. I talked my Dad into going to look at it anyway, even though it was over my budget. The women sold the car to us for $1,400, but I didn't have enough for insurance, so I talked my Dad into lending me the extra $200 I needed with the promise that I had to pay it back within 6 months (He really liked the car also and knew it was like new, so he let me buy it). I had the car for just shy of 8 years. I modified the exhaust with a high RPM long header and 2 and half inch pipe with what was called at the time a turbo muffler (Exhaust Specialties did the work in Ballard or Seattle area). I had it dyno tuned at the only place around that did it (never heard of that before, a friend told me about the shop just off of 145th and Highway 99 in 1976). With the header and the exhaust it pulled a 104 HP out of that 1600 engine, yeee haaa! It did 17 second flat quarter mile runs at between 70 & 74 MPH at SIR in Kent, could not get to go any faster even with speed shifting. The car could cook and the front end started floating over 120 MPH, no spoilers (speedo only went to 120). When I owned the car I didn't even know it had a independent rear end. I learned a lot since then because of others teaching me all about those Datsun 510's from fine people like yourself and others in the last 40 years. Thanks again and I hope you and your dear family have a wonderful week and weekend!! [[ I'll be watching for more for sure. ]]

My first car at 16 years old was a 1969 Datsun 510 two door that I bought in 1980. It was all origional and except for needing new paint it was in perfect condition. In 1984 I was driving to my parents house from college when the hood latch failed and the safety latch did not catch it, so it flew up and destroyed the windshield in what seemed like an explosion of glass shards and buckled the inside of the hood hinges, deforming the cowl, the front of the roof, and both A-pillars! I knew how to rebuild my own engine and do drivetrain/brake work, but I was clueless when it came to body and paint, so I sold it.😱😱😢😢 Nowadays that would be the least of my worries and I would probably still own at least half a dozen classic car's that sadly are now gone forever! Another favorite was a 1965 Nissan Patrol that needed a new clutch and engine rebuild, I was perfectly capable of doing the work myself but I had four young children and other projects that were more important at the time.

Hind sight is always 20/20 vision. Who would have guess that vehicles today packed with safety and technology would cost soo much$$$$$$$.
The cheap fun car you can buy and modify to your taste is gone for good. The fixable older project chassis of any make are super hard to find and if you find one its thousands too.
My older brother bought a brand new 510 back in 72 and drove in till it dropped...up here in Canada rust is bad. Somewhere along the way I put new fibreglass fenders on it for him and re-painted it in a chicken coop...when it finally completely rusted apart the engine was still running strong ! With its IRS and nimble road manners called it a poor-man's BMW.

Got my attention with the two beetles, ended up binge watching all of the episodes.
I like your style of calm, low key , quiet conversation, with the owners, and let the cars "talk", by your quality editing, and footage. A lot of passion is shown, without the " in your face " flair.
    It's really.....intimate.

I was asked once, out of the 5 cars you own - which is your favorite to drive? When I said, "Hands down my 1980 CJ7" in unison everyone said, "WHYYYYY?" And I said, "you can feel the road, hear the engine, feel the wind, and you have to think to drive it, it's engaging, and... it's my happy place" and I absolutely love the priority on automotive sentimentality over automotive cool in this video, as the 510 wouldn't normally be considered in the top 10 of "Cool Cars".... but that makes this car SUPER cool in its own right. Awesome.

Such a joy to have your work pop up. Nicole you are just wonderful at car personing. Thank you so much. In the 70's I got bored with grad school and started a 'furrin' car repair shop in the middle of nowhere. Had a state cow university and an army base, so there were plenty of Jags, Healeys, Alfas, Bimmers and a few Spyders, and a herd of the usual stuff. We had maybe a half dozen of these depend on us, and i loved 'em. They were (unlike the European stuff) bulletproof (we didn't see 'em much, so yes, you didn't hafta worry about breaking them), they were, in the true sense of the word, ELEGANT. Simple and functional. They were wonderfully engineered, so they were easy to work on. And for the day, FAST. They were fun as a DD and at the local autocross runs and, in the right hands, would run with the best of the Bimmers and Alfas. Lovely, lovely cars. Thanks for bringing back those memories. Please keep up the wonderful work, kid.
