I always wonder how Elvis' existence has bypassed so many people. Then i look at the generations after Gen X and see the answer. I feel sorry for anyone who hasn't discovered Elvis' genius yet.
That Sammy Davis jr comment above is 100%. Elvis was so poor his parents used to pick cotton with black people . Vernon said, we were poor but we were never racist.
I loathe that Chuck D & Quincy Jones' personal opinion has more sway in this world than the word of people who actually knew Elvis or worked with him . I love your reaction and assessment of this song, it still resonates today, unbelievably.
Pls do keep listening, his early work and later work is extensive and I'd say half is all gospel songs. He could sing absolutely anything, any cover he did he improved. His vocal range and voice control is impeccable.
Peace in the Valley, Take My Hand Precious Lord, and Any Day Now, Unchained Melody (1977, live show) his voice thick with all the emotions will reach into your chest and wrench your soul out.
    Love him ❤

No autotune, no pitch correction and no lip sync (except in his movies).
    I suggest
    - IF I CAN DREAM ( white suit 1968)
    - BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER ( 1970)
Thank you for this great reaction!☀️💚

Elvis’ girlfriend, Linda Thompson, wrote a 2016 book called A Little Thing Called Life: On Loving Elvis Presley, Bruce Jenner, and Songs in Between. Thompson recalled an anecdote about “In the Ghetto.” “Elvis said when his friend Sammy Davis Jr. was given this song by a writer he turned it down,” she wrote. “Sammy said, ‘In all authenticity, I can’t do this song because I never lived this way, but I will tell you who did: Elvis Presley.'”

I'm reading that book right now, it's really good. Had she stayed with him, I think history would've gone another route. Not saying he'd still be alive, but I definitely think he would've lived longer.

And now the truth about this song. Mac offered this song to Sammy Davis. Sammy said wtf is a white guy doing giving a black man a song to sing about the ghetto? wtf does a white guy know what it is like to be black and be black and live in the ghetto. Sammy then said give it to that white boy Elvis.

Even he. Yep. There's a reason he picked it up. Legendary black entertainer Sammy Davis wouldn't touch this song in the race riot-filled 1960s. But Sammy told the songwriter Mac Davis that he knew a man that SHOULD sing this song because he understood THAT LIFE better than he did, Mr Elvis Presley. Elvis was born and grew up in a SHACK with NO RUNNING WATER and NO ELECTRICITY. Elvis' twin brother DIED AT BIRTH and was BURIED IN A SHOE BOX because the Presleys could not afford a proper burial.
Played and prayed with black children and families. His mother make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for his friends who were primarily black. Elvis called his friends' black parents and grandparents MR and MRS. --- White folks down south never did that. Elvis was FAMILY in the black community he grew up in Tupelo Mississippi and Memphis Tennessee.
See Elvis was so popular that he became a meme, BUT THE MAN, no he was the exact opposite.
NO entertainer was as brave as Elvis in this era. MLK got assassinated. John AND Robert Kennedy got assassinated. Malcom X got assassinated. What did they have in common? CIVIL RIGHTS.
So Elvis was a PRIME TARGET at this time. What did Elvis do? His label, RCA and a top RCA executive said they can't release "IN THE GHETTO" because of the then current racial and social tensions. Elvis heard it and said, "That's my next single, son" and walked away.
Only Elvis was willing to risk his career to get that record on the air-waves. Only Elvis could have performed it and gotten the radio play when it came out in the late 1960's, during the Civil Rights Movement. He made it his platform.
One of his major public statements on the issues of racism and poverty in America. Without uttering a single press release or public statement. Not a single political word or comment. Amazing power of song by a very brave and loving human being that never got, nor asked for credit. That's what you call A TRUE REBEL.

Elvis was raised by parents who were very poor, in a very poor Black community. But though he lacked many things, he didn’t lack Love. He was an only child (his identical twin brother had died during a difficult labor), & his parents doted on him, but his father ended up in prison forging a check to feed his family, so Elvis knew what it was like to go without, but he never went without love, & that is the most important thing that a parent can give to their child. This song was first given to Black singer Sami David Jnr, by the songwriter. But he turned it down, saying that he had not been raised poor. He was a good friend of Elvis & knew he had been raised in poverty, so he suggested the song writer offer it to Elvis, which he did. Elvis was warned that it could be detrimental to his career if he recorded it, but Elvis went ahead & recorded it, & it was a Huge success for him. He wanted to get the message across to people.

Because race relations were so bad back then, his manager didn't want him to do this song, but he recorded it in 1969, and it was a smash. Elvis grew up in a poor black neighborhood, and often attended a black church. He never forgot where he came from, see "Elvis Presley and the Black Community', back in the 50's white stations would not play black music until Elvis changed it. He took a lot of flack from white people. He helped James Brown and Jackie Wilson in the business. Notice he was a white superstar who hired black backup singers in a time when it wasn't done. I lived it, he loved everybody and gave away almost as much as he made. Gave people cars and homes, and jewelry, he was a good man. Thanks for giving Elvis a chance, see a dynamic performance of his salute to Dr. MLKjr. called "If I Can Dream" from his 1968 come back special. Be Blessed.

This song was released in 1969. If you want to see the beginning of his career, you need to watch a live performance from the 1950s Ed Sullivan Show or The Milton Berle Show. That’s the period when the music revolution began.

    What you said is true
    It's an ongoing cycle
Elvis cared and wanted to bring awareness to the problems in the ghetto
Elvis was told not to record this song by his manager and the recording studio
But Elvis felt strongly about the ghetto because elvis grew up poor and knew exactly how it felt not to have things
Can you please react to If I Can Dream
    It's another message song
It's about the assassination of Martin Luther King
    It was a tribute song
Elvis wanted to bring blacks and whites together
    Elvis didn't see color

Jane H …. Please React to ….. If I Can Dream - ‘68 Comeback Special (Elvis wearing white suit) …. Elvis had this written for him as a tribute to Martin Luther King Jnr after he was assassinated just weeks before, & then Robert Kennedy was assassinated. He felt that he needed to say something, but his manager would not let him, so Elvis sang how he felt instead, having got one of his songwriters to write what he wanted to say. Have just subbed to your channel for your Elvis Reaction. It’s been 2 months since you reacted to this song, so please react to If I Can Dream. I think you will really like it, & it showcases Elvis’ amazing voice.

I can’t help but notice that it doesn’t matter whether its American, European, German, French or etc, The African decent has the exact same mentality and struggles, So I have to question, is this a taught racial trait, to make everyone worldwide feel that your race is a victim to worldly discrimination within society 🤔

There is a comment below from Depper. Now the real Depper died more than 2 years ago.
Depper was the guitarist from the band Mountain. Steven Pomeroy has stolen the identity of Depper a dead man and claiming it as his own. When ever he gets found out and called out he disappears for a while and when he thinks it is safe he sticks his head out again under his other name Steven Pomeroy. Steven Pomeroy is a realtor in Pocono Mountains Stroudsburg PA. He is teaching his ugly and vile behaviour to his son. The amazing feature about this person is, his parents raised him like this.
