  • LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Local paramedics now have a tool to make sure your children are safe.
The Anchorage Middletown Fire Department is the latest to use new technology that can help paramedics start immediate care on children at the click of a button.
When paramedics get a call of a young child, who for instance isn't breathing, every second matters.
As soon as they arrive they need to act fast, and caring for a 3-year-old is much different than caring for a 13-year-old.
This new app will help them determine exactly how much medicine they should be giving the child. HandTevy shows how much a child should weigh based on their age and height.
Before they even get to the scene, paramedics can hop on the app and check for the correct dosage.
They don't need to worry about doing quick math in their head and can start treatment in the ambulance before they leave for the hospital.
Capt. Amanda Price said this keeps them calmer in the field, which in turn, helps families stay more at ease.
"We can start the treatment sooner," Price said. "It's not as stressful because I already know the age of my kid most of the time. I can know my epi dose, I can know my shock dose and I know what size eye gel, so that stress that used to be there is lowered."
Anchorage Middletown joins several other departments in Jefferson County who are already using this app.
