Yeah, but you know what ... it's the family ... Bruce, Southside, Miami Steve ... the guys that preached the Jersey shore sound ... I grew up soaking it in the late 70s into the 80s in Asbury Park. Doesn't matter who sings better or who wrote what ... you had to be there to really understand how it all came together.
This has been one of my favorite songs since the mid 70;s, although it is seldom heard on mainstream radio. This live version with Bruce, Stevie and CC with Southside Johnny and the Asbury Dukes is the best I've ever heard. Wish I were there!!!
Even though I see this is Cleveland, and I can only dream of a night at the Stone Pony watching Southside and the Jukes, Bruce, Clarence, Lou Christie, or Mad Dog, circa 1976 what I missed in my 20's. Saw Bruce on the Born to Run tour at the Masonic Temple in Detroit, and I've never seen a better show!
Oh man that sounds like me. Just saw South Side again New Years Eve. 2023 had not seen him since 1983 at The Capitol Theater in Passaic (Still puts on a great show) sure miss the CAP, saw him the first time at Saint Peter's College 1976 or so, thought he was great then too. He was singing with that soulful voice and the Miami Horns belting it out!!! Man that is what music should be. Oh yea lets not forget Bruce, Steve and the BIGMAN!!!!
looks like a real party night one for the ages..Southside never taking a second seat to the legend Bruce...he sits in the pit and fires and fires...Southside you're all right...never backin down...coming down with soul sound for every common man...you did your job well and for that I thank you...
That song has so much sexual energy to it, it's unbelievable. You can just feel the passion coming through.I keep turning this up louder and louder. RIP Big Man. You are always a presense.
I remember listening to Bruce doing this live on a bootleg recording...from WMMR in Philly. I was in high school! My friends and I would try to imitate it...while cruising in South Jersey! 🤓😁
Bruce was very reluctant in those days, probably through advice from Landau, to release too much music at once, even though he was ALWAYS writing great songs. This is one reason why he had enough material (and then some) make Tracks a 4-disc box set. I take it for granted now, but before 1998, the only way I could hear Bruce’s version of The Fever was on a cassette I’d made from WMMR playing it one day. Looking back it seems cool to have lived through those restrictions, now that I can hear the fever at any time I feel like it, but it was pretty frustrating…but it helped maintain an air of mystery ariund Bruce, too, which was beneficial to his career.
It went nonstop from 1975 until about 1980 with Bruce and SS Johnny blasting out the Agora almost every other week! Fabulous time to grow up in Cleveland, I was fortunate to have been to this one ; probably 4 hours!!!
I attended this concert. It started so late because Southside attended the Boss's concert in Richfield, then came downtown Cleveland for his show. The Boss returned the favor as you see here.
I saw bruce with a very good friend at the Theater for the Performing Arts in New Orleans in 1977, I think - the same week he hit the cover of Time and Newsweek. He was awesome. My friend knew who he was. I didn't. Was totally blown away by Bruce, the band entirely, Clarence, et al. The tickets were crazy - $5 or $7. Something totally crazy. :) Springsteen is a Living National Treasure. So very few are like him.
Imagine that.. payin $7 to see Bruce. Corrected for inflation that would be about $35 today. I payed more.. BTW the Time & Newsweek articles appeared October 27th, 1975.
I wish I was born in a different decade. I really wish I had been in my early '20s when Springsteen was playing the clubs...thanks for the video!!! Bruce is like a hero to me :-) Rock and roll music makes me happy!
Two of Jerseys finest!! Rock and blues don't get any better than that!!! Raw and real.. Man does Bruce look hot... Cleveland Agora helped launch Springsteens career ...Those where the most Rockiness Days . Grateful to have lived and been a part of the greatest days of Rock-n-Roll..RIP Big Man ...
Even though this is Bruce's song, I can't pick a favourite between the Bruce and Southside versions. Both are great, which is why seeing them sing this song together is a thrill for me.
Amazing to hear this after all these years! Though the world loves Bruce (as do I), I still prefer Southside's voice. But, man to hear them together and with Clarence, MAN!!
Great, love this song and video. I once saw an interview with ssj on tv. He told Bruce offered him this song. SSJ couldn't believe it because he thought this song to be one of Bruce's best ("are you sure?"), but then "just took it and ran for it" in case of second thoughts (by Bruce)
Truly one of the most memorable club shows I ever was lucky enough to experience right up front. Bruce had a blast on stage singing his song that Johnny covered o sooooo well. Khavian, please read about Shuggie Otis and what he said on the subject. Puts it all into perspective just as Iggriffin did so eloquently. These two guys sing from their hearts under no pretense of anything else. What comes out supersedes race, my friend. In this case, it was a great performance of inner soul.
I love them both. The only time I seen them both together on stage was at the fliming of the "It's Been A Long Time" video at the Stone Pony....Wow...what a night
One of many shows at the Cleveland Agora that I attended in the early '70s. Never knew who would show up to perform with the headliner. The magic of R-N-R then still remains. One of THE best stations then was WMMS! Had these lunch break concerts also. Many can knock C'Town, but cannot when it comes to vintage Rock-N-Roll!
This is awesome. I love BRUCE and have always been a huge Southside Johnny fan as well. This would have been the top of my bucket list; seeing these guys play this laid back. It looks like it was at the Stone Pony or maybe even at Bar Anticipation in Belmar as the stage looks bigger than the Pony. Thanks for sharing! In 2010, it still lives on!
Incredible, incredible song. For the record, Springsteen never performed this circa 70's. 80's, and 90's. While he wrote it, "Fever" has always been Johnny's. And with all respect, Springsteen can't sing it or deliver it like John.
Yup, true. And they kid about it, always have, and Bruce knows....and laughingly admits it's "Johnny's". Weren't those clubs great in the old days, from here to there, with them all, so close. Sigh....
When I get home from my job, I turn on the TV But I can't keep my mind on the show When I lay down at night, I don't get no sleep So I turn on the radio But Lord, the only thing I hear is you whisperin' in my ear The words that you used to say Well now the days grow longer My love grows stronger The fever gets worse every day I got the fever for this girl He's got the fever, oh he's got the fever Nothing that a po' boy can do When he's got the fever for a girl He's got the fever, oh he's got the fever Left this little boy blue Well, I can remember comin' home See you standin' at the stove With the dishes on the table Dinner ready to go Well maybe out to a movie show Something that you like to see Because you were my sun in the morning You're my moon at night When I think about it, makes me feel alright Well now the day grow longer The love just grows stronger, baby And the fever gets so bad at night I got the fever for a girl He's got the fever, oh he's got the fever Nothing that a po' boy can do When he's got the fever for a girl He's got the fever, oh he's got the fever Left this little boy blue Alright Ooh ooh ooh he's gonna be alright Ooh ooh ooh he's gonna be alright Ooh ooh ooh he's gonna be alright Baby alright Ooh ooh ooh he's gonna be alright Baby alright Ooh ooh ooh he's gonna be alright Let's make it alright Well I can remember coming home, turning on my TV But he can't keep his mind on the show When I lay down at night, I cannot get no sleep So I turn on the radio But still the only thing I hear is you whisperin' in my ear Them words that you used to say And now the days grow longer And the love just grow stronger And the fever gets bad everyday I got the fever for this girl He's got the fever, oh he's got the fever Nothing a po' boy can do When he's got the fever for a girl He's got the fever, oh he's got the fever Left this little boy blue Alright He's got the fever, oh he's got the fever Nothing a po' boy can do When he's got the fever for a girl He's got the fever, oh he's got the fever Left this little boy blue Ooh ooh ooh he's gonna be alright Alright Ooh ooh ooh he's gonna be alright Everybody Ooh ooh ooh he's gonna be alright Everybody Ooh ooh ooh he's gonna be alright Ooh ooh ooh he's gonna be alright Alright Ooh ooh ooh he's gonna be alright ??? Bruce owns this song. He was laying back after just having performed a 3+ hour concert just prior. This is a SSJ gig and Bruce let him do his thing. Having seen both Bruce and Southside perform from their early days at the Upstage in Asbury Park I can tell you that SS was always in Bruce's shadow because he never did his own thing - he imitated Bruce....a lot.....even to the point where people would be yelling "Bruce" when Johnny was singing.
@LuckyGraveyardBoots... Bruce wrote this in 1971, but didnt record it until 1973. It was supposed to be on the Wild, Innocent E Street Album, but never got on. In 1998 it finally hit the "18 Tracks" album...... Southside put it on his album in 1976. It was two minutes shorter than Bruce's version.
Bruce and his band played a live concert broadcast there in August '78 for WMMS's 10th anniversary as part of the "Darkness" tour. If it was around that time, then Steve and Bruce being there that night would make sense. Several years later, Southside and the Jukes played Blossom Music Center with Clarence Clemmons and his band, "The Red Bank Rockers" as the opening act. Rumors were rampant that Bruce was going to make a "surprise" appearance at the show, but he didn't.
@camelgirlll Southside came out with a Greatest Hits CD It might be hard to find but well worth it every song on it worth it's weight I' ve been a fan since I saw them at the Stone Pony in Asbury
great vid. While everyone knows that Conan's bandleader Max was/is from the E Street Band, did you know that Bamba the trumpet player (who does the "in the year 2000" voice)and the rest of the band on Conan are from the Asbury Dukes. Bamba's in the fedora in this video.
@LuckyGraveyardBoots Yeah, and wow could he sing. Springsteen wrote it though, and that's the thing he's definitely got on Johnny. Johnny didn't write much of his music, as far as I know, while Springsteen... Well, you know.
I'm from Cleveland & CSU at this time, AUG78. I saw Bruce at the Coliseum and after he left he went straight to the Agora to jam with Southside. These are great vids from that night. Been there, seen them, at the Agora for the Real Music. JJ
The night Bruce played the Cleveland Agora for the 10 th Anniversary show...I went to see Crosby, Stills, and Nash at the Richfield Coliseum, but only through default. I got to hear the last 40 minutes of it coming out of CS&N. It was the best of both worlds Those were the days! What an incredible show Bruce put on that night. I wonder if there's more footage out there amongst us RUclipsrs? If so please post or let me know.
DANMED! INCREDIBLE... Why don't we ever see/hear this kind of music anymore?
Yeah, but you know what ... it's the family ... Bruce, Southside, Miami Steve ... the guys that preached the Jersey shore sound ... I grew up soaking it in the late 70s into the 80s in Asbury Park. Southside one of the best Blues voices of all time ...One Of ....
Damn! The Rat Pack of Soul.....Bruce, SSJ, Stevie and Clarence..1978❤

Fucking A.....one of my ALL time favorites......no one ever take it off.
Was blessed to see both these artists in the 70's and 80's and Southside in 2-2023 (he was in fine form)!
@@jamesoliva9531 Agreed! Nice to view from an historical perspective.
Absolutely

I'm weeping just listening to it... and trust me I ain't got a damn thing to be sad about
❤AMEN to that 😊
Great Music….The Asbury Soul Sound!
Following SSJ and Bruce since 1978!
Dec. 78 Winterland San Francisco show ... he played this song.. I became a fan after that show.
Just seeing those three buddies and their friends on stage having a blast and playing some great rock and roll. Bless their hears.
Absolute magic!!!!!
Wow, used to play this song clear back in 1977, just without all the backing horns. Man, this version sounds so GREAT!!!!!
I remember listening to Bruce doing this live on a bootleg recording...from WMMR in Philly. I was in high school! My friends and I would try to imitate it...while cruising in South Jersey! 🤓😁
I know exactly which version you are referencing It was fabulous!

I must say that I think Springsteen had a cooler voice back then. This is a very underrated track. I think it's one of his best.

When I get home from my job, I turn on the TV
But I can't keep my mind on the show
When I lay down at night, I don't get no sleep
So I turn on the radio
But Lord, the only thing I hear is you whisperin' in my ear
The words that you used to say
Well now the days grow longer
My love grows stronger
The fever gets worse every day
I got the fever for this girl
He's got the fever, oh he's got the fever
Nothing that a po' boy can do
When he's got the fever for a girl
He's got the fever, oh he's got the fever
Left this little boy blue
Well, I can remember comin' home
See you standin' at the stove
With the dishes on the table
Dinner ready to go
Well maybe out to a movie show
Something that you like to see
Because you were my sun in the morning
You're my moon at night
When I think about it, makes me feel alright
Well now the day grow longer
The love just grows stronger, baby
And the fever gets so bad at night
I got the fever for a girl
He's got the fever, oh he's got the fever
Nothing that a po' boy can do
When he's got the fever for a girl
He's got the fever, oh he's got the fever

Ooh ooh ooh he's gonna be alright
Ooh ooh ooh he's gonna be alright

This IS a Bruce Springsteen song. It is not the Peggy Lee 'Fever'. I agree with your second point... except he doesn't do 3hr + shows these days ;-)
Did you see that hair move when he starts singing?!? He knows he's sexy...
SSJ & the Jukes wouldn't have a career without Bruce - half their songs are his. Bruce was Bruce long before the Jukes existed
who are the 13 clods who didn't like this???
they have no soul
