I've been a fan of Southside Johnny since the late 70s. I drove down to NJ to see one of my favorite bands who were playing outdoors at a big fair and it turns out they were opening for Johnny. Made for a great late afternoon and early evening. Love his horn section. Listening to him turned me into a Bruce fan too. Wonderful times, great memories.

For us older Springsteen fans from the NY NJ region. We liked Bruce when he was little more than just a better known Southside Johnny. The raspy voice tom cat who was tainted with a greaser's "cruising in the night" type of soul. Made known largely because of a single progressive FM station in NYC called WNEW. You could hear this cat at 2AM whether it was "Jungleland" or "Born To Run". These were songs anthems we liked for ourselves that the rest of the world eventually stole from us.
This was it! Used to see the Jukes at the Stone Pony. A slim "Miami" Steve Van Zandt in the band. Springsteen hanging out in a corner with some georgeous woman...then hopping up on stage for the encores at 2 or 3 in the morning. They're the the heart of rock & roll...and R&B...and blues: REAL & fun..fun...fun. Doesn't get any better than Jersey all night. And the Jukes are still doing it and still a lot of fun. Thanks for posting!
Oh, I remember these days well, when the music was hot, when the men were sweaty and bare-chested and so was the audience. When there was a level of enthusiasm that reached out from the stage and grabbed you in the gut. Who would've thought that it would happen all over again por moi thirty-three years later... These men make me SO happy. This music makes me feel alive. Keep on keepin' on, Jukes and Jersey boys!
What a treat!! Southside Johnny and the Dukes(and the BOSS). I only wish that Johnny and the boys could have enjoyed the intertnational success that graced Bruce. Thank God for RUclips and all you wonderfull fans and how we can go on the internet and relive our youth and musical loves anytime we want. Where's that time machine, I think I want to go right now!
The Cleveland rock scene was on fire in those days. The Agora brought in so many great artists, WMMS was at it's peak with Coffee Break Concerts, rock star interviews and breaking new acts that most other cities never played (Suzi Quatro, Alex Harvey, etc).
So true!! We couldn't wait for the coffee break concerts and all the new world premiere singles that WMMS put out. WMMS recently put out a world premiere for The Black Keys. First time they have done that in years. I still listen to 'MMS faithfully.
10/16/2024- just saw Southside perform at Bogart’s here in Cincinnati tonight. Having a party was the second encore. Still just a great fun, fun song to finish the show.
Thanks for posting. I was at this show at 8 years old. Used to visit my Dad in the summers in Cleveland. He worked security . Seen a bunch of bands in the three years I would visit. Once again thanks for posting. Brings back some good times.
the bad news if you were there that night is that every live performance you'll see after that will pale in comparison. it just doesn't get any better than this. this is also a great example of how live music, when done right, can deliver emotion and energy that studio music can never touch.
It is just a JOY to see the Boss and Johnny are letting these classic clips stay up I've counted 8 different shows i saw that were only vivid memories to have them back (like Magic) to see again Is beyond words -Johnny your music are the reason my wife and I are togtherme and my wife
Reach Up And Touch The Sky remains one of the best live album never recorded, as well as Parkerilla by Graham Parker and The Rumours. The combination of soul and rock'n'roll proposed by Southside Johnny was like an explosive for my young soul (at that time I was 18 years old...). Thanks for adding this video, is a joy to listen and see how pure can be the music.
FYI this Jukes concert was taped and broadcast latenight on the local cbs cleveland tv show called 'onstage at the agora' and simulcast on wmms. All of it except for these three encores with bruce, that is. Those were not allowed to be shown (although the live audio version of them was often replayed on wmms radio). Thankfully the tv station peeps kept the video, so we have it today via the magic of youtube. All of us old bruce/jukes cleveland fans have always known this video existed and are very glad to finally be able to see it here -- needless to say the rest of the show is great as well.
meesalikeu My name is Bill Payne, I was a director in Cleveland at WEWS TV and I was hired to direct this concert at the Agora as I was for other concerts including: Todd Rundgren, ToTo, Meat Loaf and others. The first hour was Johnny and the S.S. Jukes, although Steve Van Zant was playing with them that night. Springsteen was playing in a larger venue at the Coliseum in Richfield, Ohio that same night. At the end of his concert I was told he was helicoptered into Cleveland and he and Clarence Cleamons joined Johnny on stage. The concert was a hot mix (meaning I cut it live) and the music hadn't been remixed either. Since I had the four cameras in isolation I was going to remix the video in post and synch the remixed sound onto it. Then word came down that since Bruce had never done a live concert, his management didn't want his first one to be a local broadcast on WEWS (the local ABC affiliate) but wanted a national broadcast. So, I was only allowed to air the first hour with just Johnny and Southside and erase the parts with Bruce. Well, I took a 3/4" copy of the concert before I had the tape operator erase it. I thought I had the only copy, because I had never shown it to anyone, but I guess the tape operator didn't erase it until he made at least one copy and probably more. I was surprised to see it so many years later on line. Bruce and Johnny also did a version of Stagger Lee which was in the concert. Has anyone seen that.
+Bill Payne hi Bill i recognize your name for sure and thx for your response. How did it happen that you filmed these encores with Bruce anyway even though you knew you were not allowed to broadcast it at the time? And how were you and the tv station able to keep them? I wont ask how they ended up here on youtube lol. Thanks again for shedding light on this - your team did a fantastic job with all those shows.
meesalikeu Hey, Meesa, Meesa, on the night we shot this, it was a complete surprise when Bruce showed up - we weren't told that he would. So, when we shot the numbers with Bruce I had no idea that they would not be broadcast. I wasn't told that until two days after I had edited the Bruce segments into the show that it wouldn't be broadcast. A version was played on our channel of just Southside and the Jukes (with van Zandt and Clarence Cleamons) and the hour program I had put together with Bruce was supposed to be erased. I had a 3/4" dub of the show made just for me, but I never loaned it to anyone or dubbed off a copy for anyone. That is the truth. I still have the complete show but I've never even played it for anyone. So, I really don't know how these cuts got out. I'm sure the tape operator made a copy for himself before erasing the master and the producer probably had one made as well as various people from my station and the Agora. There is a number on You Tube where Johnny sings "Stagger Lee." I thought Bruce had sang it with him but I was wrong (faulty memory), but it is of poor quality and has obviously been dubbed a number of times. I'm in California now so I'll try to find someone who can take the 3/4" format and burn a CD.My copy is a first generation and I'm sure it's still very clean since it has never been played after all these years. I would love for fans to see the whole concert if I can do it without a legal problem. Good speaking to you.
+Aron Kozin I know, but bill payne will have a clean, complete uncobbled together first generation copy of the whole show. It deserves to be seen that way. Hooefully he can make it happen when he gets a chance. We all are not getting any younger lol!
+meesalikeu I will try but I'm a little worried about the legality of releasing it to youtube - I don't want to get sued since the performance doesn't belong to me. I was told to destroy it but, as I told you before, I made a 3/4" copy and, unbeknownst to me, I guess the tape operator did too. There's no other way these clips could have gotten out because I never released any from my copy.
I just finished listening to Bruce read his autobiography "Born to Run" and seeing this performance brings that period in Bruce's life to brilliant reality. Wow - I wish I'd been there. A great Sam Cooke hit sung with white boy soul. The passion kind of reminds me of Van Morrison too.

Never spent much time on North Shore (I was a South Shore guy).I was trying to get as far from NYC as I could, and at the time (1970-73), the South Shore worked well.I worked in North Jersey from late 1973 to early summer 1974, surfed at Sandy Hook, and was at the Stone Pony a few times.Quite different from the South but the music considerably better.I moved to Calif. in summer 1974 so missed the whole late 1970s music scene, which is too bad because the music is great.SJ&BS are performers!

I remember when Johnny and the Jukes were the house band at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park.....then early in the morning, Bruce and the boys would come in....those were the days
I bet that was awesome, going there and seeing all these great musical talents. I first saw South Side Johnny as a little neighborhood bar that had great bands in the 70's, outside D.C.
Wish I were there!
OMFG! the flashbacks are coming fast and furious!!! thanks for preserving what rock used to be, and was amazing in that dive hole in the wall, on E14th
It was on E24th
Teacher is preaching go Johnny sing it for the barn to blow go go good bye 🎉❤😂
Never spent much time on North Shore (I was a South Shore guy).I was trying to get as far from NYC as I could, and at the time (1970-73), the South Shore worked well.I worked in North Jersey from late 1973 to early summer 1974, surfed at Sandy Hook, and was at the Stone Pony a few times.Quite different from the South but the music considerably better.I moved to Calif. in summer 1974 so missed the whole late 1970s music scene, which is too bad because the music is great.SJ&BS are performers!
