What is magic and how do we wrap our heads around the disconnect between our logical and rational selves and that within us that gives us chills and makes our knees weak. How can the transformation of simple materials affect us in a way that defies the clear boundaries of what we have come to understand in our daily lives?

Normal paintings: There's dirt over the canvas
This painting: There's a canvas under the dirt
Underrated comment of the day
bellísima
Where was it kept, in a pool-hall since 1952? Possibly the dirtiest one I've seen him work on.
@@argusfleibeit1165 probably a fire... I mean, I d'ont see how a painting could be so significantly dirtied over the span of however long it's existed for. Usually, when paintings are this obscured its because of a very old oxydised varnish, here it's clearly only surface grime. Ergo, it really looks like it's been in a house where there was a fire, and what's so thick on the surface of the painting is soot.
Yess
wow, this was dirty
Yes the old consevators used a style of biodegradable lacquer called "chocolate".
@@paint4pain I thought they just put it in a room where people smoke cigarettes 24/7
It looks like it was used to line a fireplace chimney, FFS.
My first thought was it must've been hanging in a diesel repair shop.
When you mix up your varnish and stain jars lol
*Julien, quietly chuckling to himself as he clicks on another font *
😂😂😂
Don't forget the changes in italic, boldness and size of the font and how he repeated 42, making the count from there 1 number less. This is one of the purest arts of chaos if you ask me.
@@dailinelily omg I didn’t even notice 😂
I wonder what he was thinking. 'Aw, the kids'll love this'? 😂
As a graphic designer, this was driving me absolutely NUTS. I had to window my browser and move the counter off-screen so I would stop seeing it.
he uses his fonts like how middle schoolers use slide transitions
or how 43 year olds use slide transitions
I've never had my middle school experience described like this before, but I'm all for it.
The chaos burns within him; fueled by the burning souls of so called conservators of yesteryear and fanned to flame by the comment section.
@@ADKEMT this is so good it deserves repetition - I would most respectfully suggest - since it’s obvious you are a zen Master - his next video?
@Scarlet Pimpernel I’m glad you enjoyed it. However, much like Julian’s Chaos and a local coal mine I’ll choose to be a long slow burn just below the surface.
why do i feel like julian carefully unwraps hershey’s kisses so the wrappers aren’t torn and then flattens them into perfect lil aluminum squares
I.. I do that...
Doesn't everyone?
Abbey Kowalsko you know damn well he does that 😂
That was dirty, but even after it was cleaned I thought the nose was still dirty.
He probably eats real chocolate lol
"I'm not a magician or an alchemist", says the man who, with a little brown bottle of clear liquid and some fancy cotton swabs, rolls back time itself and unveils color and beauty where there had only been the memory of them before.
With all due respect and appreciation; Bullshit, good sir.
Especially since alchemists were basically chemists! And those are chemicals in that bottle. That he mixed himself. So he is an alchemist. Yup.
That is waht is all over the painting!!! It makes sense now!!
Pro Tip: That clear liquid could be something that you already have in your house ...

My thoughts exactly 😅😂
Yep though might take more than 2 hrs and i'd need a yard brush not a cotton swab!
That'll be a lot of cotton balls
i want to schedule my session after this person
You shall have it
The coal mine will be happy to get their painting back.
Thanks for that comment. Made me laugh out loud.
Lol
Lmfao 🤣
It really looks like it was dug out of mud.
Needed that laugh.
I firmly believe the meme-pit that is Julian's fanbase are the reason he did the font thing with the numbers.
He just woke up one day and decided to cause more chaos than usually in the comments section just for fun
I bet he sat there reading through the comments laughing his ass off
As someone who has been watching him for almost 2 years I can confirm that this man is an entity of carefully concealed chaos hidden behind calming music and calming vocals
LMAO no doubt
@@abacustomss yea for his is the anti Zen - master!
@@abacustomss With how he gracefully insults past conservators (which remind you, may be already dead) and is indirectly criticising everyone (whether they care or not) by reasoning his own actions, I agree with this.
I'd be even more interested in seeing if he'll be making a "non-relaxing zen" video for the sake of it. Imagine expecting a man with a soothing voice, doing a nice relaxing video but instead you see him screaming and being as energetic as a 4-year old on 100 energy drinks. It would be hilarious and I'd be entertained for the rest of the weekend.

"YES"

He got me good this time.
I'm convinced he plans the entire video around that transition. 😂
I started laughing out loud when he went in with the skillshare, and I’m in the middle of a library 😂
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Is no one gonna talk about he basically wrote a short novel about his love of this painting and his job? Like I didn't even realize it was a cleaning video until I looked. Get this man reading audio books!
All of it just to introduce skill share lmao
I know, right? I felt embarrassed with my English all of a sudden. I am going to watch this again and again. Thank you, Julian and Skillshare!
That's why I was so annoyed at the commercial in the middle. I was so engrossed in the story.
He should do sleep stories, his voice is soothing and relaxing.

Julian, here's a serious question for you: When cleaning a painting like this, have you ever removed the varnish in a pattern that leaves a pair of cool sunglasses or a mustache on the character?
I know I would have, and I'm in my thirties.
"That would be... inappropriate."
@@OfficialSparklyPig Only if it's not cleaned off later😝
He should've left a "mask" over the mouth and nose, to be cleaned off once the pandemic is over.
Haha that's actually a really good question! I'm sure he might have done that behind closed doors ;)
Well he said he removes in irregular shapes dictated by the painting soooo yeah, I'm pretty sure sunglasses were and are still being carved out of old varnish xD
He says “without romance” like he’s not literally reciting original prose and probably gonna play Bach later. 🙄
I remembered him saying: sometimes paintings get dirty because they are exposed above a fireplace

You probably don't know this but... He is a being of chaos.
This painting reminds me of the time I moved into a house and washed the little peach coloured curtains, only to find that they were little WHITE curtains.
My friends mom is looking to buy a new house, and the one she has been interested in since she literally moved to the neighborhood came up for sale... she went to look... and the people living there had been smokers. The entire place REEKED, the walls were dirty, they had those popcorn ceilings that are IMPOSSIBLE to clean...
She waited, as the realtors said the homeowner's daughter (Homeowner passed away, I think) was arranging for the place to be professionally cleaned/desmoked, and then went back to check again... all they did was paint over it! You could still smell it through the whole house.
Also the kitchen was some completely insane red color scheme that just made you go a bit crosseyed looking at it.
They were also asking like 200k higher than any other house in the neighborhood.
Needless to say, she didn't purchase it.
We where cleaning our apartment when we first move in. We were washing the concrete floor in the laundry room... only to find out it was beautifully tiled just packed in dirt and grime

And strained that dirt and nicotine through a coffee filter 😝
Oh, Julian found my old reusable coffee filter. I kinda forgot that I made it out of a painting.
The only varnish in stock was Dark Walnut.

What is it about the 69 font?
The whole video long I couldn't hold the feeling like I've seen the woman in this painting before. When he was about to reveal the face from all of the grime it finally hit me. This woman looks like Romy Schneider, the lead actress of the 1955 movie trilogy Sissi. These movies are very well known in Germany and Austria. A quick Google search of the painter revealed that he did actually live in Germany for a while after these movies came out. So it possible that the woman in the painting is said actress. Not stating this as a fact, I was just curious.
Thanks for coming to my TED-Talk and greetings from Germany.
Wow!
Who else went to Google this actresses after reading the comment. PS: after looking at her photos I do too feel that it's her. Thanks for sharing this mate👍
Interesting! There is a resemblance. But the woman also looks very much like "the girl in a blue dress" and the woman in the "Study of a young woman" he painted.

When those blue eyes appeared i almost teard up. How does such a bueatiful thing get so obscured.
Same!
Am i the only one that would gladly watch every second of him real-time conservating any painting????
The cleaning of her shirt alone almost brought me to tears. It’s breathtaking to see the original work underneath.
I've definitely been that kid that blows through an entire wing of paintings in a museum in like 20 minutes, because, well, they're just paintings of people and they don't even look that special. Especially with certain styles of art that are less realistic. I probably would have walked past this painting without much of a second thought.
The revealing of this painting that had been obscured for who-knows-how-long makes it more poignant for me. It's more obvious how brilliant and vibrant the colors are, and it's more salient how deliberate each brushstroke is and how they make look mismatched and haphazard, but come together to make this beautiful portrait.
tldr; I think museums should start printing high-resolution photographs of damaged or discolored paintings before restoration and hang them alongside the newly restored original. Its an important part of the painting's history, and provides some helpful background and context for people like me who sometimes struggle to "get" art.

Julian probably won't see this but on the off chance that he does, I just wanted to say thank you.
I've got this weird thing where I can't fall asleep unless I listen to Would I Lie To You, a British panel show. I watched it so often that I can and often do, quote it in everyday life. I think it's because I have a bit of anxiety and the familiarity helps me relax.
But I stumbled across this channel, and as someone who makes art, I think it's fascinating. At the same time, it is extremely peaceful and calming and helps me get to sleep.
Also, I love the comment section, you guys are hilarious.
So thank you
Glad I can help
you might check out audio books. I have the same thing, its really hard to get to sleep unless I'm listening to something. So for awhile now, i put on an audio book I've listened to prior, and I'm out in 15 minutes. I can totally relate to needed the familiarity.
The audio book definitely depends on the narrator. But ive been enjoying RC Brays narrations and then Becky chambers "Wayfarers series"
@@MyFoot I'll try checking them out, thank you
Same. When i cant fall aslerp i just play julian video it help me soooo many times!
@@BaumgartnerRestoration Inquiring minds want to know? What did you clean off that painting? Varnish? Nicotine and tar? Do I need to go to Patreon to satisfy my desire?
The ever changing choice of font and the 9 minute long ad read are what makes this video cursed
I think you mean blessed
Did anyone else kinda hope for a batman style face mask to be made towards the end when it was just the eyes and nose left to clean? Or was it just me
man his sponsors aren't paying him enough. This was the best ad transition yet.
8 minute lead in to the ad!!! Gotta love Julian!!
Can we just admire the self-restraint it took to save the eyes for the very very last thing?! GAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH
He often does this. I would have been disappointed had he not.
I kept looking forward to it. And at the very end I thought : "alright let's remove this mask now". So loving. So deliberate.
Such an eloquent monologue, such a masterful restoration and that Skillshare segue was, dare I say it? Magical.👏🏾
How convenient that this is his line of work AND has a wonderful soothing voice. 👀
My idiot brain, when he gets to the hair:
"Oh wow that spot is so dirty, he's not even making a dent in it. Oh wait, that's just the colour of the hair"
Same lmao!
Did they spread nutella on this?
Also my designer brain had a fricking stroke when seeing all those fonts. xD
Maybe Nutella - AFTER having been eaten.
it was likely a copious amount of tobacco smoke and other varieties of grime
@@elizabethbejin1573 no im pretty sure it was nutella. the secret formula that makes it a little see through though!
Ahh same here! I kept thinking about how he edited in each font and felt physical pain imagining doing it one by one 😂
My guess was coffee grounds, but Nutella is good as well!
The piano music is so lovely. I must know the name!
It's probably Julian 🥰🎈
I need it toooo
Me toooo
What’s magical is the smooth transition from regular content, to ad content, and back again. Never gets old, tbh
"Everything in this world is magic, except to the magician."
When you revealed her eyes at last, I was moved to tears. I could not help thinking of how many years she had suffered that awful grime, and how the world had seen her. At last her true beauty was revealed, her eyes of blue looking out upon the world as they once did, and I was overcome. This was no magic trick my friend, just the steady hand of a creative master, willing to show us the beauty that lies beneath those years of awful grime. Thank you so much Julian, you are a true messenger of joy.
omg(osh)
Damn I cried at your comment
exactly
One of my favorite reveals.. It's like he brought her back.. I can't help but think that this was a real person.. that at one point in time it was someone's wife.. mother.. I almost have that fleeting desire to know more about her.. who she was and how she spent her years living..
The narration on this video, specifically the first 5 minutes or so, reminded me of a poem by Mary Oliver called the Ponds. It’s a longer one, so I won’t put all of it here, but I do want to share my favorite stanza,
“Still what I want in my life
is to be willing
to be dazzled -
to cast aside the weight of facts
and maybe even
to float a little
above this difficult world”
You‘re a painter, a carpenter, a historian, a chemist, a speaker, a youtuber, and your level of skill and patience is crazy. Man, you‘re my hero.
You forgot poet. That man knows his way around words😏
There’s literally nothing this man cannot do
You forgot magician
Just marry the man..
