Inherited from a relative, this painting of Venice's Grand Canal arrived worse for wear with some glaringly obvious problems. There were however, a few surprises in store for us along the way to the Grand Reveal.
    Note:
Yup, I forgot to include the footage of the back showing the windows that I spent so much time creating. 🤦‍♂️ I’ll post some photos to my instagram and video to the epilogue which will be up on my Patreon

I enjoy your comments (both prior to and after restoration) where you simply appreciate the painting before you. Sometimes you provide a few details about the subject or historical bits about the work. But mostly it's your sense of appreciation. That's what sets your work apart. It's not as much a problem to be solved, it's a work of art that needs loving care to return to a state where it can be enjoyed as it was meant to be.

I love watching your videos for so many reasons, but one is that as an artist I have learned a lot about what to consider when I make a painting. I’ve been watching for years and have adjusted materials (for example I was taught to use dammar varnish in school, but I switched out of that because of the yellowing). Pretty much all modern canvas have staples, but as I start stretching my own canvas I will switch over to tacks. Sometimes it’s fun when I’m painting to think of the conservator in the future who may be working on it too, should I be so lucky as to have my work last that long and be that significant hahaha. It means a lot seeing the care that you put into what you do.

That was awesome, so much unnecessary touching up before Julian had got the staples out. I think Julian's estimation of 25 to 30 years since the last attempted restoration is probably spot on. I've been repairing electrics and rewiring houses for close to 50 years and the older plasticised electrical tape used to go rigid and brittle, the newer tape 30 years ago tends to stay flexible, Upton a point. Great job Julian, really happy for the paintings owner who gets a beautifully conserved piece of art back on their wall. Thanks for posting.

This is one of the most amazing results I have seen, and I am sure the original artist would have been delighted by your recreation of these ethereal clouds. All the more for being cognicent of the intended shapes and strokes of the sky, instead of taking the less painstaking route of tentatively piecing together each complex dash and dot of colour.
Thank you for sharing your expertise with the world (and now too with Kit - whose humourous faces are most entertaining!). Let me throw my 2 cents in while we're here:
The US Constitution is a living and breathing document. That's how the founders intended it. What you refer to as "overpaint" is merely the natural growth during its lifetime. It is not a static art object but a living avatar of the American psyche.
The American people ARE the government. It is not separate from us, it is us. Whereupon hatred of the American government is hatred of the American people.
Democracy functions best when the most citizens possible actively engage in its governance. It weakens and devolves into fascism when people give in to fear and irrationality.

At 16:00 when you reveal the original painting it gave the whole painting a very peaceful happy feel unlike prior it felt sad and gloomy, such a great job. Just found your channel and started looking at your videos. Well done and thank you for restoring these amazing works.

I believe that the work you do here on this RUclips channel will impact art restoration for decades to come. Are there any young, up and coming art restorers that are not aware of this channel and not watching your videos?
    Unlikely.

Do you paint your own original paintings? I ask because you're so good at envisioning the intent of other painters even when massive chunks of the image are missing. I assume that takes a painter's eye, but maybe I'm wrong. Thanks for the great videos!

Wow! I am always amazed at how you can match the different colors and make all the damages and losses just … disappear! I don’t have an artists eye, but I know a few people who do, so know that we all experience the world around us differently. And I thank goodness for that! I can recognize beauty when I see it and you sir create beauty!
