It may seem like damage to a painting is purely accidental and just part of the life of a given object. But the conspiracy of poor materials, neglectful care and downright bad past conservation shouldn't be dismissed as normal, rather they are arrows shot to the heart of the painting. Yet occasionally a painting just wont yield to that onslaught. That painting is The Resistor.

The care with which Julian treats the artwork that comes into his studio has honestly inspired me to do the same with many different things in my own life, including taking care of myself. Sometimes when I'm tempted to be hasty or careless, or neglect something important, I think to myself, "Would a conservator do this with a painting?" If the answer is no, I have to step back and reconsider why I was tempted to act that way and take steps to resolve it. It's honestly a marvelous help for self-care. We only get one body, one life. We should take the same care with it that any conservator would take with a wonderful work of art.

What IS it that makes your videos addictive? The dedication to detail, the thoroughness, the ethics on display, the occasional very subtle sarcasm, the wit, the timbre of the voice - ? All of that and more - including one's investment in the emotions: the fervent wish that these often horribly damaged paintings can be saved even though you start to watch quite convinced that some of them are beyond human help - I love oil paintings, and probably that contributes to the fascination: but I bet many watch you who have no particular interest in painting.

Julian, I love to watch your videos because the are not only interesting but they are fun to watch. What I also enjoy, is when I watch another site of conservation, I feel so proud because I know what each step they are doing because “ I learned it from Julian’s videos”

After seeing the atrocities perpetrated on paintings over the years of watching this channel, I feel like the "core tenets of conservation" is not really a thing, but just something he wishes existed.

If the appearance of a Masterpiece hundreds of years after it was made is astonishing, imagine seeing it the day after it was created. What a Grand Use for a Time Machine.

Julian: This painting is a symbol of resistance to an onslaught of handling, materials, and poor conservation work that conspire to an almost certain doom.
    Me: It's absolutely disgusting.

Hey Julian! Love the videos as always. I had a suggestion for a change, if you are interested! When you upload a video to RUclips, the frames per second is capped at 60fps, which is unfortunately unavoidable. I am not sure if you noticed, but the panning shots that are shown in the beginning of most videos feel jumpy and a bit jarring. I wish so badly that they were most clear, because we would be able to get so much more out of the minutia of the painting's character and the issues that are soon to be fixed. I think maybe doing slower panning shots or still shots at different angles could make a difference. I also wonder if it would be possible to upload the raw video file to your Patreon page. That way it could be enjoyed at max resolution and/or highest fps, and that would likely draw more supporters to your Patreon page!. Just rambling on at this point, but it's only because I look forward to the videos. Keep it up!

Hi Baumgartner, can I suggest a video idea: I'm sure I'm not the only one but could you make a video on how would you go bout restoring the aging mona lisa, like, talk about the techiques and methods and the contigency steps incase plans do go right. It 'lisa' being the most famous, would love a video on your thought process. and as always fantastic videos.

The cleaning/varnish removal is my favorite part. Can you post some videos of the whole cleaning process of a given painting? It could be one you’ve already posted the whole process of restoration/conservation.
It could be with or without sound and could be sped up (I know some cleaning takes hours or days!). It is so satisfying.
Or maybe a compilation of cleaning just the faces (with the eyes last!😂). That would be awesome.
Love your typical whole process videos too. Keep it all up!!

Expect to sit back and wait 3-5 years then. Apprentices generally spend that long doing the drudge work before they are allowed anything at all like the responsibility of being given a whole painting to do entirely on their own. They need to learn so much beforehand.

That's like expecting the hygienist to take over for the dentist. They may be training but they do the jobs the expert doesn't want to--and once they're proficient enough in tasks they're no longer an apprentice and seek out their own position.
Aka Kit wouldn't be an apprentice if she did a whole painting alone.
