Got bad money habits? Feel like you're always broke, even though you get a regular salary? Or do you fall into the trap of always increasing your expenses along with increases in income? Don't worry, you're not alone.
In this video, I'm tackling what I think are the 9 most common bad money mistakes that keep people poor, in debt, or just in a state of not being able to manage finances.
Although this is by no means an exhaustive list, these are the basics that really help me keep my own finances in track, encourage good habits, and that I used before I ever became financially stable, or a millionaire.
    0:00 - Introduction
0:23 - 1. Getting comfortable being in debt
    1:13 - 2. Not paying yourself first
    2:30 - 3. Not having a backup fund
3:57 - 4. Not clearly knowing your income or expenses
    5:13 - 5. Paying too much tax
7:15 - 6. Having expensive past times or hobbies
8:21 - 7. Not investing when you should
10:27 - 8. Keeping the "dripping tap" on
    11:43 - 9. Not caring about finances
12:45 - Bonus: Believing money (or people who have it) is evil
    13:29 - Outro

As a freelance photographer, I recognise that I’m a mess tracking my expenses and all my income sources. Now even more with my channel, affiliates etc. It’s where I fail the most! 🤦🏻‍♀️ I’m gonna start saving that 10% of every client’s payment. Also, track every single thing I spend which is a lot in the creative industry! 🤦🏻‍♀️ THANKS A LOT for the tips! Soooo useful! ❤️

your distinction between an "emergency fund" that you don't touch and a "buffer" that covers the little things is an important one! new car tires, water heater, broken dishwasher etc. these are not emergencies. they happen, getting hit by a car and not being able to work for 5 months because you are in the hospital is an emergency, and an emergency fund will make sure you don't lose your house.
more people need to understand this.

This was great! However when people say eat the rich IT IS NEVER on an individual per se is more of the system i.e. corporations that they’ve created that unfortunately keeps many people poor or living paycheck to paycheck. Billionaires only exists because the vast majority the people they employed are heavily under paid and many are also employed as “contractors” so the company can skip on providing benefits to their employees….so, there’s a lot more nuance to that, than hating the rich..🤷🏽‍♀️

Speaking as a former bank employee, banks are a business, and they charge fees because that's how they make money off you. They're not charitable organizations that store your cash. In fact, the reason I quit working there was because management was always pressuring us to get our poorest clients even further into debt by selling them cards, accounts, and loans they didn't need, and I just couldn't do it.
So yeah, it's super important to shop around for different banks/credit unions. I would never let the bank I worked for touch my money.

I sort of disagree with the expensive hobby thing. It depends greatly on how much value it brings to your life. I would argue shopping does not provide all that much value if it is a hobby. However, I road and mountain bike, both of which provide tremendous value to my health and well being. I DO NOT mind spending money on those things and will continue to do so for the rest of my life. Now, I don't think they cost much more than $150-200 a month if I amortize them over the life of the bikes, so it is not that bad. I also have my financial health in order and save about half my income, so its not like these things are harming my finances.

"Eat the rich" doesn't refer to every single rich person. It's referring usually referring to the 1% of the 1% ( a category you don't fall under for example ) as well as people who earn their wealth by exploiting others ( again, a category you don't fall under ). Jeff Bezos is a perfect example of an individual that comes to mind when people are ranting about the rich. He's not just some millionaire - he's enormously wealthy, and on top of that the working conditions at Amazon warehouses suck, they don't get paid enough considering how hard they have to work, and Amazon has recently taken away some of the benefits they were giving those workers. So yes, if you become a billionaire by treating the individuals that made you rich like shit, you deserve to be eaten. This doesn't mean I hate the RUclips lady who got rich via photography, traveling and money management. It just means I dislike people who earn wealth on the backs of the most vulnerable and desperate members of our society and then barely compensate them for it.

To be honest, I did work for Amazon for almost 4 years.. and it was completely my choice to do so. I was grateful for having a job and it was quite the best paid in the city, when I consider that you dont need any qualification for it. It's only point of view. Yes it would have been nicer to have more money or longer breaks.. but still, every worker choses to work there, its not a prison. So I left after 4 years when I felt it didn't work for me anymore. Everybody has that choise. And I felt I was treated well, just some things from management didn't make really sense..

THANK YOU!!!! I found a lot of value in this video but that note at the end was a little ignorant in my opinion. Beliefs like "maybe I could be as rich as Jeff Bezos one day.. if I wOrK hArD eNoUgH" only contributes to wealth inequality. It's a belief that the ultra-wealthy have instilled in us to avoid getting held accountable for their unjust actions/business practices.

Hi Sorelle - loving your new channel and thank you for these tips. I really needed to hear them :)
I have a question regarding your tax strategy. Of course, these shortcuts are technically legal, but how do you justify not paying tax when it's used to help social services like healthcare and housing? Always curious to hear other viewpoints from my own, and would love to get more insight on this. Big fan of yours, can't wait to see what else you release on this channel! x

    • @Abundantiaco
      @Abundantiaco  3 года назад +3

I don't justify paying no tax. But I do justify using means to legally lower tax, if the government allows it. Most people are just missing out on simple tax savings because they're not educated as to what can be claimed, or used to reduce your legal tax rate. For example here in Iceland, the government will allow you to deduct a portion of your income each year when you spend on your own education, which in my opinion is something worthwhile and easy to pursue.

You completely miss the point when it comes to the bonus section. It's not about being jealous of rich people like you, it's about acknowledging how most of the world's wealthiest people and entities were made wealthy by exploitation and bloodshed. Would you have told the peasants in the French Revolution to simply adopt an abundance mindset and stop worrying about famine? It's not evil to want money and success, it's evil to hurt and take advantage of people to get there.

Great video! Paying yourself is crucial. I like your tip about having 2 strategies if having debt, one paying off the debt and another for putting off money for investing (or I'd add also a vacation as rejuvinating is also important...or equipment upgrade). Otherwise it seems like a rabbit hole, never ending struggle. There is a different mindset when you see positive growth of finances and paying debts can become easier once there is another focus as well.
Taming the leaks is super important as well. Even if still there should be ways to bring more income /revenue too.
