Blood definitely makes family, but not always. Tom’s character reminds me of the five good emperor’s of Rome. They were considered among the best leaders in Rome’s history and they shared the common background of being the adopted son of the previous emperor. Rome reached its zenith under them. The glory days ended when Marcus Aurelius’ biological son, Commodus, took the throne. And when responsibility falls to them they truly feel duty bound to do their best.

I always felt that Tom Hagen was sorely underrated as a character. He was an integral part of the Corleone family, a very intelligent and cunning individual who was just as ruthless as some of the tougher guys we see throughout the series. I would go so far as to say that his only true weakness was that because he was adopted, he yearned for his family's acceptance. This was something that Michael was easily able to exploit, as we get the sense that he didn't really even trust Tom despite what he says to him in Part II. He says himself, "I always wanted to be thought of as a brother by you Mikey, a real brother." In short, Tom was easily one of the smartest and most capable among them but had something of an inferiority complex that the others would use against him when necessary. I never felt like he got the respect he deserved
He was the #3 Man. Never done by an outsider before. What more do u want? 💁 Sheesh! They broke the rules for him. And he was not a murderer. EVERYONE else was.
According to novel, "The Godfather", by Mario Puzo, Tom Hagen didn't work for the Don immediately after graduating law school; the Don encouraged Tom to practice law in a proper firm, which he did for three years or so, I think. The Don wanted Tom to get some practical legal experience first.
Tom is a life lesson. Tom doesn't look down on his brothers. You can say anything to Tom and he will help you fix it. Tom isn't blood but he's more of a brother than Fredo. Tom is his own version of Vito and his loyalty is to the family.
Just read the book for the first time after being raised on the first two films I am convinced that Tom is the star of the story. He is the key to every hit and situation and the hugely underrated Robert Duvall played the part to perfection. My favourite character.
In the novel Sonny brought Tom home one day and demanded that he stay. The meal that Mama Coreleone made for Tom that evening was the best meal he had ever eaten. In Godfather 2, it was implied that Tom and Mama were very close.

3:16 No, the rest is NOT history. What the hell happened to Tom’s sister? Did she die or was murdered while living on the streets? Did Tom leave her with some orphanage? Did she go to live with relatives? Did the siblings reunite in their adulthood?
I read on a Wiki Fan page that after their parents died, Tom and his sister were placed in an orphanage, but Tom ran away and was later taken in by the Corleone family. It’s assumed that his sister remained in state care until she aged out of the system or was adopted. There is also mention that Tom managed to track his sister down later in life, but she rejected him, saying her childhood memories were too painful and also because she didn’t want any connection to his way of life in the mafia.
Michael had been to war and had real strategic training as an officer in the Pacific theatre. He shows this in how he takes out ALL of his enemies in one move at the end of the first movie, something none of the other Don's would have ever considered or been able to devise and control. Tom weighed every word, gesture, look and thought things through twice before opening his mouth to speak. Sonny could come up with things on the fly but not like Michael would or with the depth of understanding of the long term repercussions that Tom would see. There are some targets you walk away from because while it looks like it would be a good win right now, the knock on effects would kill you later.
This isn't exactly related to the video but, considering the trilogy as a whole, the story of the Corleone's is about strategy over strength. They had been almost entirely wiped at one point, to being one of the wealthiest and most respected families in the country that were "almost" 100% legitimate. Of course, with no other options Vincent Mancini took over as don. I wish they would make a 4th film while Andy Garcia is alive so we could see what state the Corleone family would be in almost 40 years later.
A Part IV with Vincent as the Don and Connie as his consigliere would be very interesting. If we follow the timeline, the antagonisT wouldn’t necessarily be another mobster, but a DA like Rudy Giuliani.
According to the novel "The Family Corleone", Tom Hagen's sister ended up in an orphanage until she was either adopted or aged out. In the 1930s, Tom, then a law school student, confessed to Mama Corleone that he had located his sister, but in her only letter to him, she stated she wanted to forget her childhood and wanted nothing to do with him, while also disapproving his association with the Corleone Family, referring to them as "gangsters".
@@1987AnimeBoy Thanks for taking the time to provide an answer. I didn't know of this book. I'll definitely look for it. It seems to flesh out/answer a lot of questions raised by Puzo's novel.
These videos are super awesome. I clicked on one and have been on a rampage going through them when I have time. Keep them coming because I am really truly enjoying these.
Remember, Tom was also still under pressure from the Turk to “make the deal with Sonny” so I’m pretty sure that any talk that conflicted with that wasn’t well received. That’s part of the beauty of this film. Duval’s performance in this scene is so incredibly nuanced. Knowing what we know and also knowing what Tom is probably thinking as a result. I’ve watched that scene over 100 times and will always spot something new. This is always considered to be Michael’s big scene - where he finally starts to come out of his innocent college boy persona and morph into a real gangster. All in one scene. Meanwhile, keep your eyes on Tom. Notice HIS transformation too. By the end of that scene, he goes from hiding his reservations about going after the Turk from the rest of the family to ultimately coming around at the end. Confident that little Mikey might be right after all. Michael: “We have newspaper men on the payroll, right Tom? They might like a story like that.” Tom: “They might. They just might.” Brilliant.
I always felt like Tom's contributions to the family are extremely downplayed but he's truly the level headed voice of reason which is very necessary in certain situations!
According to the novel "The Family Corleone", Tom Hagen's sister ended up in an orphanage until she was either adopted or aged out. Honestly, I watched the Godfather 1 and the Godfather 11 many times. The Godfather 111 on the other hand though I’m glad I saw the movie. I only saw it once and that was enough. I was thought Tom Hagan was one of the most important characters in the films, and was surprised when he wasn’t in the third film. I also believe that he was the perfect Consigliere to Michael. Let’s face it they were just like each other, and a perfect complement to each other. The weaknesses Tom had as a war time Consigliere Michael, more than meet up for, and where Michael lacked in the law, Tom more than made up for. This is what made them both as a team such a powerful force to be reckoned with.
As always excellent work - I’m not sure you acknowledge that Tom was so thorough and excelled to the degree Michael was a bit jealous of his relationship with Vito. That plays into Tom being removed because, “they say it’s just business it’s not personal, it’s personal.” Also, “you’re taking things personal this is business!” - “ain’t I a person?” Gyp Rossetti 😂
I think your take was wrong. The reason Michael pushed out Tom was because it was possible that Tom would be the one to betray Michael. He was keeping Clamenza, Tessio and Tom all at arms length while he built a secret regime. To Tom’s credit, he was able to see through Michael’s plans just like the Don knew he would. There was also a secondary reason. Michael wanted to transition the family into legitimate businesses, and needed a lawyers not Consigliere.
Tom Hagen proved he deserved to be in the Inner Circle. 👍🏼 I wonder if Duvall looks back and regrets now not participating in TGF PIII. 🤔 Thanks for the vid❣️
At 5:26 I was expecting Sonny’s comment about Tom but……nothing?? I’m guessing it was the point after Vito comes home from the hospital and Sonny with Tom’s advice and was angry that he didn’t have a Sicilian wartime advisor. Am I correct??
Michael reduced Tom's role in the family because he needed to be able to fully trust him. Tom was about the only person Michael could completely trust.
something shocked me deeply the time i red the book, was that the mama never considered Tom as part of the family. And there is several moment where it is said how she despise Tom....
I think that was partially due to Vito treating him better than his own son's at times. Like he treated him much better than Fredo and sometimes looked more favorably upon him than Sonny (in regards to achievements). I can understand the frustration that might have caused her. He thought better of a child that came from another woman than some of his own that came from her. So she just passed on the resentment to Tom. Even though he wasn't responsible for it.
@@TheChattounet it’s ok if you haven’t read the book. In the scene where Kay visits and gets tactfully dismissed, we only see Tom’s reaction. In that same scene in the book, when Tom takes Kay into the house to call a taxi, Mama Corleone arrives soon after and has a talk with Kay about Michael. As Tom tries to tell her to keep quiet, she snaps at him in only a way that the woman who raised him could. More than that, no direct reference to how she feels about Tom is mentioned. It certainly isn’t in the negative.
The genius of Hagen was that he stood just outside the family, was more of a dispassionate observer than a hot blooded member. He was also a chameleon and could survive and fit in with different worlds. He was the one sent to deal with studio heads, Denators and other gangsters. Extremely valuable, the family should have taken his advice and gone in with Salozzo, made a ton of money and avoided bloodshed. He had it right.
One of the 2 biggest flaws in the Godfather 3 is the absence of Tom Hagen (Robert Duvall), the other being the presence of Sophia Copolla. The story would have been different if Tom was there, so I've read, but even as it was written, Tom would have been a much better character than the one played by George Hamilton.
What's amazing is despite not being a Sicilian, he was allowed to enter Costa Nostra and rose through the ranks to be the advisor to the Don. That position is the highest you can achieve without being a blood relative of the Don himself. Such a thing is unheard of and shows just how intelligent and valued Tom was.

It’s assumed that his sister remained in state care until she aged out of the system or was adopted. There is also mention that Tom managed to track his sister down later in life, but she rejected him, saying her childhood memories were too painful and also because she didn’t want any connection to his way of life in the mafia.
this is really peak YT content. Thank you for posting. It is a bit nutty, but totally original and engrossing.
Love your channel! Cheers
Andy Garcia is still alive, 67yo
in godfather 4, michael transitions and the family members are cast as minorities...
What happened to his sister?
Epstein
@@connormcclenny9681Maybe she was “recruited” by the Tattaglias?
@@sandisteinberg731 I didn't enjoy it at all. Wonder how you find / found it.
Thank you for the video
Hope you enjoyed it 💯
Tom was a great negotiator, he could make you an offer you couldn’t refuse.
Maybe an offer you wouldn’t refuse🤔
The Godfather III might have been a good movie if Robert Duvall was in it.
"Inner circle"
I admirer all of Tom's Character traits .
Especially his control over his emotions.
They picked the right man for this roll.
Excellent video as always
Appreciate it @da_hitmanhart6650 🌹💯
These videos are super awesome. I clicked on one and have been on a rampage going through them when I have time. Keep them coming because I am really truly enjoying these.
Battle of the Lawyers 🧳: Who would You want as Your Lawyer? 😂
Tom Hagen 🆚 Saul Goodman

I know who I would pick 👀
Of course tom
You should do a video comparing them.
Excellent commentaries about Tom Hagen & description of the Consiglieri .. good entertainment.. thank you.
Tom is one of my favorite characters in GF 1. I didn’t like how Michael treated him in 1 and 2, and his relationship with Vito was beautiful
Videos have been a blast
They might like a story like that.”
Tom: “They might. They just might.”
Brilliant.
More than EXCELLENT. I'm waiting for the next video. Grazi
I always felt like Tom's contributions to the family are extremely downplayed but he's truly the level headed voice of reason which is very necessary in certain situations!
Incredible insight!! Yeah that meeting with Moe Greene was amazing. The way Tom and Michael handled themselves.
Great video! What do you think happened to Tom's sister?
Great question!

@@1987AnimeBoy that's sad 😢
Oh wow! Ok, thanks for the info!
I'm very much enjoying these vids. Fantastic job
Tom is one of my favorite characters
As always excellent work - I’m not sure you acknowledge that Tom was so thorough and excelled to the degree Michael was a bit jealous of his relationship with Vito. That plays into Tom being removed because, “they say it’s just business it’s not personal, it’s personal.” Also, “you’re taking things personal this is business!” - “ain’t I a person?” Gyp Rossetti 😂
I loved the character of Tom Hagen. Hated how he wasn’t in 3. Maybe the film would have been better if Robert Duvall had come to an agreement
If they had Sora back in the days, they would not even need good Robert.
The first meal that Tom ate in the Corelone home was the best meal that he had ever tasted.
Inner Circle, LET’S GO! Another Great video!
🌹 💯
Tom Hagen proved he deserved to be in the Inner Circle. 👍🏼 I wonder if Duvall looks back and regrets now not participating in TGF PIII. 🤔 Thanks for the vid❣️
Really enjoying these.
At 5:26 I was expecting Sonny’s comment about Tom but……nothing?? I’m guessing it was the point after Vito comes home from the hospital and Sonny with Tom’s advice and was angry that he didn’t have a Sicilian wartime advisor. Am I correct??
One thing the movie doesn’t mention but the book does. The 5 families were extremely offended by Tom’s appointment to consigliere
Absolutely fantastic presentation.
Glad you enjoyed it 💯
Michael reduced Tom's role in the family because he needed to be able to fully trust him.
@@Graywing it hasn't been stated. It's just that it's not her blood, but you could be right in a way
Uhhhhhh what? She absolutely fussed at him like she was his mother.

Tom Hagen is my favorite character in Godfather becouse he is so calm and intelligent
...because...
The story of The Godfather is so beautiful because of how human it is. Tom Hagan is my favorite character because I can relate so much with him.
Great episode
Vito and Tom Hagan are my absolute favorites
The genius of Hagen was that he stood just outside the family, was more of a dispassionate observer than a hot blooded member. He was also a chameleon and could survive and fit in with different worlds. He was the one sent to deal with studio heads, Denators and other gangsters. Extremely valuable, the family should have taken his advice and gone in with Salozzo, made a ton of money and avoided bloodshed. He had it right.
Dispassionate? 👎
Tom Hagens best praise was from Vito himself when he commented that Tom understands him better than anyone else
Everyone needs a Tom Hagen in their life.
Great video ❤👌🏻
Tom was the ONLY one that could yell at Sonny and get away with it besides Vito.
According to the novel, one day Sonny brought Tom home for dinner and 1:16 demanded that he be allowed to stay.
Well done bro❤
Insnae video as always, really appreciating your hard work on this channel 🤝🤝🤝
What's amazing is despite not being a Sicilian, he was allowed to enter Costa Nostra and rose through the ranks to be the advisor to the Don. That position is the highest you can achieve without being a blood relative of the Don himself. Such a thing is unheard of and shows just how intelligent and valued Tom was.
Another excellent video, thanks. Tom was taken in by the Corleones because Sonny pressurised his father as he knew Vito had something to do with his father’s disappearance
Where is this? In the Puzo books?
@@AzrealMaximus no, it's in The Family Corleone, a prequel to The Godfather written by somebody else. not good at all.
@@mauziki thanks for replying, was unaware.
I agree with your comment about Tom Hagen. The non-Italian audience felt an affinity to Tom Hagen.
