It is possible for a woman to have a family and not "self-sacrifice", but in order to achieve that, they must have a good partner who is willing to share child-raising and housework, and most men don't. Yes! This is so true. A lot of people already see me as wrong or weird because instead of thinking about having children and getting married, I am focusing on building a business as a spiritual guide. However, I have already accepted that I will have a family later in life than most people and as a consequence have people think of me as "bad"/"wrong". I had this thought occur to me about two years ago. Be willing to take a stand for what's right for me. I observed this trait in my Dad and I said to some friends who came to the house that is what I want to be. Doesn't matter if people agree with me, or like me but if I can stand firm and don't worry about people liking me or not for my opinions at least they'll know I'll stand by them and have some respect. Sometimes my Dad has said something, the whole rooms in disagreement with him but I respected how strong and firm he stands, he doesn't bend to someone's will by questioning himself but he's willing to let anyone think what they want to think whether it's good, bad and I knew then that's the person I want to be.

I'm happy you are going for what makes you feel fulfilled:) I for instance am in the situation in which my boyfriend work from morning till night for his success while I am battleling between supporting and entertaining each other for 1free hour he has a day, and feeling and being alone in the rest of the day. I can relate, I had to bump heads with so many people through my journey to success. I’ve been through it so much that I’m accustomed to being overwhelmed and afraid. But I always charge at my fears because I can’t stand being scared of something and I will conquer my goals no matter what! Ruthlessness is my weapon and my kindness will come through for what I teach and do for people! Endless persistence is my mantra!

Wanting success before anything else is a cover up for believing something is wrong with us. We want the success because of the attention it will give us. So, it's not success we want, we want attention. And the feeling of being "someone", a good one, when we've succeded. It's been hard wired into our system but that doesn't mean we cannot see through it and let it unwire. Without self belief, there IS actually nothing wrong with us, and energy can flow inhibited and freely in this great undescribable relaxation. There is no need of validation or attention in order to feel good unless we believe it. We would enjoy life TOGETHER and achieve what we want, not for the success but for the joy of living.
I can feel how personal this is for you Teal 🙏, and I found those examples quite challenging but I guess if the person is authentic enough to express their priorities then you would hope their loved ones would understand. After finishing High school, I went against my parents wishes and hopes for me to have a safe and well paid job in France where I was born and raised to follow my dreams of travels and to speak English daily. I made so many dreams come true 🙏 and I moved to Australia 16years ago. My whole family is still in France and there isn’t one conversation with my mum that doesn’t end up in some sort of guilt trip about my decisions because her daughter lives on the other side of the wold. If I don’t call them, they don’t contact me because I’m the one who left, they think the least I should do is initiate contact. That’s the price I pay for my dreams. It’s a fantastic video! Oh I've become much more aware of my shame in the last two years. I wouldn't have immagined all the ways I thought I was "bad". I want to point out what I see missing, and that is 1 how incredibly subconscious the expectations from f ex your family is, and 2 how codependent parents will be subconsciously threatened by your success, because their self concept has to change if f ex they expect you to be a failure, or they expect you to stay small because that is what everyone just does in the family.
As much as i love Teal Swan videos, i found this one to be discussing a very important point, but it got a bit messy. As a person who crossed many "electric fences", i believe that the key is to be in alignment with personal set values. if we do something just for the purpose of reaching a goal but it crosses our personal values, then the ramifications can be severe. For example, a lawyer with "personal integrity" as a personal value may find themselves in a high profile court case. They can do many things to win, but if they bypasses their personal principals/values, then they may win, but the emotional and consequential behavioral aspects can be grim. The examples used in this video are very "black or white" set to deliver a point. I understand. But, the areas are gray. In the example of a woman CEO firing her cousin because she wasn't up to par with the company's standards and having to pay the price of "family dinners", there is a away to do it, which is to speak with the family in a kind way and also help the cousin in getting a job somewhere else which is more suitable for her (I speaking from experience and the cousin later thanked me). In that that way, personal values are met and the electric fences are not set on a high voltage as portrayed. It seems that this video, not like others, was written from a very personal (and emotional) point of view. Love it nonetheless. Thank you for all the knowledge you are sharing.

This is unbelievably on time for me on my current path 😲 as a recovering codependent, I couldn't fully commit to my goals because I want to help out my family, even if they don't necessarily need me I want to be around 😑
I get this alot being a tree faller getting paid by the area we cut in silviculture, I've been cutting trees for 21 years none stop and love it, and do my best to work the hardest steepest area so other guys are safe and get some productive work, but every time I get into the good going and making some big money for a labour intensive job , seems like I'm hated for it and called a creamer and taking all the good work, I don't like the bad buzz so I go back to the steepest hills, at least the other boys are safer where they are happy. (The forestry we work, are pine frams and are replanted after harvesting each rotation about 28 - 30 years.)
Maybe i'm wrong, but this seems to me that your co-workers are just assholes, that need some "good guy" to do all dangerous (and not properly paid for this risk) work instead of them. But if your salary is 2x-3x higher than their (for their much easier and safer work), then it is OK. My personal experience is, that there are companies (or work collectives) where people every time find few reasons why annoying, or dangerous or difficult work, shod do someone else than them.

YES. And this idea even goes beyond what we typically think of by the word "success." My family has always been big into birthdays -- gifts, dinner celebration, cake, etc. I love that. Several years ago, I told my family that I didn't want to get gifts on my bday anymore, because I personally don't need any more things and have a hard time getting rid of all the stuff I already have, and also, our planet certainly doesn't need more things, or more plastic to swallow. Not acquiring more stuff would be my version of "success" in this instance. On my 50th bday, my oldest sister picked me up to go out for breakfast. When I opened the door, she handed me a medium-sized bag, saying, "I know you said you didn't want gifts, but..." and explained how she saw these items and thought of me so bought them. Sigh. They were nice and even "green" things -- silicone food storage bags, mesh produce bags for grocery shopping, wool tennis balls to put in the dryer to reduce drying time (side note: I'm vegan and have talked many times about not acquiring new leather, wool, etc. She told me these were ethically sourced. Again: sigh.). I gave everything to friends within a week because nice or not, I don't want more things. This had been known for a few years. So the following year, that same sister wished me a happy birthday, handing me a box which contained a novelty mug, again, saying, "I know you don't want stuff, but I figured you definitely drink coffee, so it would go to use." Well, fair enough, but the problem is...I already have way more mugs than a person needs! The other problem is, when I reminded her about my wish to be gift-free, she got mad. Our relationship has not been the same since. We used to be close, but we never talk now, and she will respond to about 25% of my texts. When I've asked female friends about it, they almost universally say that it isn't a big deal, she means well and is just trying to be nice. Huh? So here, I am the bad guy by practically everyone's definition. It's made me really doubt whether I'm being the asshole. But I just don't want gifts. How can that preference possibly pose an inconvenience to anyone? To be clear, I still get gifts for other people, but in the form of consumables, like restaurant gift certificates to places they like or wine or nice chocolate or coffee -- whatever that person likes. Or gift cards for my nieces and nephews in college, because they need supplies, etc. And if someone told me they stopped drinking coffee, I would stop buying them coffee. For my bday last year, I reminded people that please no gifts but that if you absolutely need to give a gift to people on their bday, I can make a list of things I truly need. That's when I got the mug. My sister likes birthdays and getting people the perfect gift. And that's fine, I get it. But I've been pretty clear about this, and it's not something specifically directed at her. But somehow I'm the jerk who can't just go with the flow. I'm selfish for not letting people celebrate my birthday the way they want. I just don't understand this. Anyway, thank you for this video, and I'm SO glad you included the bit about women being especially susceptible to giving in. I'm female, too, and when I see it happen it drives me nuts, not only because I think, "Just make your case and stop trying to please people. It doesn't make you wrong," but also because it makes it hard for other women to set boundaries because, like you said, it makes us bitches. Ugh.
I totally get you. My family’s the same way. I think it stems from them having gift-giving as a primary love language. When I reject or get rid of a gift, they feel like I’m rejecting or devaluing their love. Its not true, but that’s how they’re interpreting it.

After becoming so successful as an international spiritual teacher, it would be
interesting to know in what way Teal was (or still is) a "bad" person.
Some people just won't understand that you need to do what needs to be done to achieve success. I speak from experience. A dear loved one left me because I was pursuing my success. I was vilified for pursuing a dream, so it's really nice to see you make a video touching on this.
I'm happy you are going for what makes you feel fulfilled:) I for instance am in the situation in which my boyfriend work from morning till night for his success while I am battleling between supporting and entertaining each other for 1free hour he has a day, and feeling and being alone in the rest of the day. I trying to figure it out for myself if the success on one necessarily comes at the expense of another or if there is a middle way for everyone to feel happy, and fulfilled

I can relate, I had to bump heads with so many people through my journey to success. I’ve been through it so much that I’m accustomed to being overwhelmed and afraid. But I always charge at my fears because I can’t stand being scared of something and I will conquer my goals no matter what! Ruthlessness is my weapon and my kindness will come through for what I teach and do for people! Endless persistence is my mantra!
Misery and Miracles are related, If One can't stand the misery, they should stop praying for a Miracle.

Wanting success before anything else is a cover up for believing something is wrong with us. We want the success because of the attention it will give us. So, it's not success we want, we want attention. And the feeling of being "someone", a good one, when we've succeded. It's been hard wired into our system but that doesn't mean we cannot see through it and let it unwire. Without self belief, there IS actually nothing wrong with us, and energy can flow inhibited and freely in this great undescribable relaxation. There is no need of validation or attention in order to feel good unless we believe it. We would enjoy life TOGETHER and achieve what we want, not for the success but for the joy of living.

I can feel how personal this is for you Teal 🙏, and I found those examples quite challenging but I guess if the person is authentic enough to express their priorities then you would hope their loved ones would understand.
After finishing High school, I went against my parents wishes and hopes for me to have a safe and well paid job in France where I was born and raised to follow my dreams of travels and to speak English daily. I made so many dreams come true 🙏 and I moved to Australia 16years ago. My whole family is still in France and there isn’t one conversation with my mum that doesn’t end up in some sort of guilt trip about my decisions because her daughter lives on the other side of the wold. If I don’t call them, they don’t contact me because I’m the one who left, they think the least I should do is initiate contact. That’s the price I pay for my dreams.

Oh I've become much more aware of my shame in the last two years. I wouldn't have immagined all the ways I thought I was "bad". Sometimes I can rewire myself without crossing that electric fence, sometimes it does take crossing it a few times. Sometimes I think the shame is gone and then it comes back. Sometimes I just stare at it and do nothing. Thanks for reminding me I am allowed to get shocked and that it might not be the wrong thing to do.

Oh Teal you always deliver the much needed wisdom. THIS!! This is brilliant and exactly where I’ve felt I was struggling… have been struggling… but just the reminder to expect the struggle and do it anyway fills me with determination!
I love it, especially the question at the end sums it up perfectly, and makes Teals piont. I want to point out what I see missing, and that is 1 how incredibly subconscious the expectations from f ex your family is, and 2 how codependent parents will be subconsciously threatened by your success, because their self concept has to change if f ex they expect you to be a failure, or they expect you to stay small because that is what everyone just does in the family.

As much as i love Teal Swan videos, i found this one to be discussing a very important point, but it got a bit messy. As a person who crossed many "electric fences", i believe that the key is to be in alignment with personal set values. if we do something just for the purpose of reaching a goal but it crosses our personal values, then the ramifications can be severe. For example, a lawyer with "personal integrity" as a personal value may find themselves in a high profile court case. They can do many things to win, but if they bypasses their personal principals/values, then they may win, but the emotional and consequential behavioral aspects can be grim.
The examples used in this video are very "black or white" set to deliver a point. I understand. But, the areas are gray. In the example of a woman CEO firing her cousin because she wasn't up to par with the company's standards and having to pay the price of "family dinners", there is a away to do it, which is to speak with the family in a kind way and also help the cousin in getting a job somewhere else which is more suitable for her (I speaking from experience and the cousin later thanked me). In that that way, personal values are met and the electric fences are not set on a high voltage as portrayed.
It seems that this video, not like others, was written from a very personal (and emotional) point of view. Love it nonetheless.

I get this alot being a tree faller getting paid by the area we cut in silviculture, I've been cutting trees for 21 years none stop and love it, and do my best to work the hardest steepest area so other guys are safe and get some productive work, but every time I get into the good going and making some big money for a labour intensive job , seems like I'm hated for it and called a creamer and taking all the good work, I don't like the bad buzz so I go back to the steepest hills, at least the other boys are safer where they are happy. (The forestry we work, are pine frams and are replanted after harvesting each rotation about 28 - 30 years.)
Maybe i'm wrong, but this seems to me that your co-workers are just assholes, that need some "good guy" to do all dangerous (and not properly paid for this risk) work instead of them. But if your salary is 2x-3x higher than their (for their much easier and safer work), then it is OK.
My personal experience is, that there are companies (or work collectives) where people every time find few reasons why annoying, or dangerous or difficult work, shod do someone else than them.
@@janbalaban5268 thank you for comment, you are not wrong, I think that all the time about co-workers, fortunately in this line of work they come and go , so see alot of the same behavior. Not sure if it's me getting older but seems like the good workers ( team players) is a rare thing too cross paths.

YES. And this idea even goes beyond what we typically think of by the word "success."
My family has always been big into birthdays -- gifts, dinner celebration, cake, etc. I love that. Several years ago, I told my family that I didn't want to get gifts on my bday anymore, because I personally don't need any more things and have a hard time getting rid of all the stuff I already have, and also, our planet certainly doesn't need more things, or more plastic to swallow. Not acquiring more stuff would be my version of "success" in this instance.
On my 50th bday, my oldest sister picked me up to go out for breakfast. When I opened the door, she handed me a medium-sized bag, saying, "I know you said you didn't want gifts, but..." and explained how she saw these items and thought of me so bought them. Sigh.
They were nice and even "green" things -- silicone food storage bags, mesh produce bags for grocery shopping, wool tennis balls to put in the dryer to reduce drying time (side note: I'm vegan and have talked many times about not acquiring new leather, wool, etc. She told me these were ethically sourced. Again: sigh.). I gave everything to friends within a week because nice or not, I don't want more things. This had been known for a few years.
So the following year, that same sister wished me a happy birthday, handing me a box which contained a novelty mug, again, saying, "I know you don't want stuff, but I figured you definitely drink coffee, so it would go to use." Well, fair enough, but the problem is...I already have way more mugs than a person needs! The other problem is, when I reminded her about my wish to be gift-free, she got mad. Our relationship has not been the same since. We used to be close, but we never talk now, and she will respond to about 25% of my texts.
When I've asked female friends about it, they almost universally say that it isn't a big deal, she means well and is just trying to be nice. Huh? So here, I am the bad guy by practically everyone's definition. It's made me really doubt whether I'm being the asshole. But I just don't want gifts. How can that preference possibly pose an inconvenience to anyone?
To be clear, I still get gifts for other people, but in the form of consumables, like restaurant gift certificates to places they like or wine or nice chocolate or coffee -- whatever that person likes. Or gift cards for my nieces and nephews in college, because they need supplies, etc. And if someone told me they stopped drinking coffee, I would stop buying them coffee.
For my bday last year, I reminded people that please no gifts but that if you absolutely need to give a gift to people on their bday, I can make a list of things I truly need. That's when I got the mug.
My sister likes birthdays and getting people the perfect gift. And that's fine, I get it. But I've been pretty clear about this, and it's not something specifically directed at her. But somehow I'm the jerk who can't just go with the flow. I'm selfish for not letting people celebrate my birthday the way they want. I just don't understand this.
Anyway, thank you for this video, and I'm SO glad you included the bit about women being especially susceptible to giving in. I'm female, too, and when I see it happen it drives me nuts, not only because I think, "Just make your case and stop trying to please people. It doesn't make you wrong," but also because it makes it hard for other women to set boundaries because, like you said, it makes us bitches. Ugh.
I totally get you. My family’s the same way. I think it stems from them having gift-giving as a primary love language. When I reject or get rid of a gift, they feel like I’m rejecting or devaluing their love. Its not true, but that’s how they’re interpreting it.
