I usually prefer to shop from the base model (or near the base) and add a few options. On many cars the base gives you a softer and more comfortable ride ( from smaller wheels and less stiff suspension) and cloth seats which I usually prefer over leather. Spend the many thousands you save on an audiophile grade aftermarket stereo and craft beer and y'all can have a nice day
I purchased the base Mini Cooper manual transmission with the sport suspension.....this thing rocks! All the torque comes on at < than 2,000 rpm. Handling, steering, shifter are all top shelf! It is refined and quiet and the interior materials are excellent. I cant wait to see how it does in snowy weather...hopefully good.
Surprised you didn't mind the lack of feeling in the clutch and the soft suspension. To me, this car feels just like any other small car, which is a shame because the old MINIs were so great.
Not at all. For the base model MINI without the optional suspension I think this provides great separation from the Cooper S - the hardcore will migrate to that car anyhow.
+Kev50027 You couldn't be more wrong, the Mini handles sharply even the base Mini (actually it is lighter than the S, so it may feel even better as weight is the enemy) The clutch is good as well. Nothing feels or handles like a Mini...not sure what planet you are living on:)
Nice to see this review of the "base" engine, which sounds pretty nice on its own. Steve, do you know when the five-door version is supposed to hit the market? And is the five-door a bit longer or the same size as the two-door?
With the wheelbase expanded by 2.9 inches and the body lengthened by 6.3 inches as compared to the new MINI Hardtop, the 4 door model provides greater freedom in terms of interior use. The MY 2015 will be available for retail in January 2015 and priced at $1,000 over the MINI Hardtop 2 door.
jay czyzyk I drove both cars and I feel the Mini is superior and more fun in most every way. My opinion is all that matters to me since I make my own buying decisions.
Thanks, quietguy1948! RUclips doesn't allow me to hit reply to your comments.
Steve could you elaborate on the what you thought was bad about highway driving.? Was the car not sable? Great review.

Thank you Steve. Looks like a great car at a great price. I'd still go for the S.
Another solid review. Bluetooth streaming should be standard (on every car really). It really isn't an expensive technology.
Thanks, Kev.

For 22k there is no better car for driving fun+premium feel.
+buildmorefarms100 fiesta st the newcivic2016mustang
jay czyzyk I drove the ST, the Mini was far nicer and more fun. You cant get a Mustang for 22k and the Civic isn't even in the same league....boring.
read motor trend or any other car magazine the fiesta st will out gun the hard top mini in extreme enthusiastic driving

yes your opinion issoley your and not a professional one
A 2014 car with halogen headlamps is disappointing. If not LED, it should at least come standard with HID Xenon...
I know. Anything with halogen these days seems pretty lame.
can this mini use lower Octane 87? a lot cheaper...
I know this is an old comment but mini recommends 89 or higher even with the 3-cylinder
