  • From its early settlement by miners and ranchers to its spiritual attraction for members of midcentury countercultural movements, Joshua Tree has been drawing people to its otherworldly desert landscape for generations. But among the towering rock formations and vast backcountry is a patchwork of private homesteads, known as inholdings, that remain mostly hidden from the 3 million visitors that come to the park each year. Join three UCR historians as they shine a light on the invisible spaces and stories that lie beyond the park’s main drag.

    That was very interesting! There is definitely some weird and fascinating history out in the California deserts. I'd love to see more local history with UCR professors.

    Joshua Tree is in top 10 most visited NP. But it’s not the most visited nor is Yosemite.
    It’s Great Smoky Mountain NP at almost 13 million visitors.
