- How-To Guide for the New Braunfels Can Ban & Best Options for taking Food & Beverages on the Comal River when you go River Tubing. We explain WHY there is a Can Ban, a variety of options, and how to still have a great time River Tubing in compliance with the New Braunfels Ordinance banning all "Disposable Containers" on the Comal River and Guadalupe River within the City Limits of New Braunfels. Violation of the Can Ban Ordinance could get you a ticket and a hefty fine, so knowing before you go is the best way to ensure you have a great time on the river and avoid any problems. In this video, we cover the main items you CANNOT take on the river and a variety of items you CAN take on the river in order to be in compliance with the Can Ban Ordinance and still have fun. Basically, no Disposable Containers are allowed on the Comal River and the Guadalupe River within the City Limits of New Braunfels to prevent litter from ending up in both rivers. Disposable Containers consists of any Food or Beverage container that is meant to be a one time use, throw-away containers, such as aluminum foil, aluminum cans (beer cans and soda cans) candy and snack wrappers, paper bags, paper plates, paper towels, napkins, and containers, plastic (water bottles, plastic wrap, plastic bags, trash bags, plastic cups, Ziploc baggies, etc), and cardboard packaging (Wine boxes, juice boxes, etc. Also, all Glass, Styrofoam, and Foam items are prohibited on all Texas Rivers, which is a State Law. That means NO fast food to-go Styrofoam drink cups or Styrofoam food containers on the river. Items you can take are Non-Disposable containers, such as Yeti Cups, Tupperware containers, Sport Drinking Bottles, half-gallon, and 1-gallon Flip-top Jugs and One 30 Quart Cooler or smaller is allowed per person and the Cooler must have a Locking Mechanism on the Lid to prevent the contents of your cooler from accidentally spilling into the river. Additional Information: Texas Tubes is OPEN every day all summer long, including all the Holiday Weekends, like Spring Break, Memorial Day Weekend, the 4th of July Weekend, and Labor Day Weekend, heading into October! What the hell do you even need a cooler for then? So if you wanna drink beer you gotta have it in a tumbler or plastic reusable container before getting in
Gage Evans - you are absolutely correct for your needs and situation! You don't really need a cooler if you bring a 64oz Igloo or other brand insulated drinking jug with a flip-top and just want to drink from it... you basically set your drinking jug in your lap and then float and drink, close the lid when you go through the Tube Chute and then start drinking again in calm water. For those Tubers who want a variety of beverages to choose from and who might want to bring food items with them in Tupperware containers, then a cooler is a better fit for their needs. There are plenty of options to choose from, so you just pick the option that suits you best for your needs and then grab a tube and JUMP IN and get your float on! Thanks! Texas Tubes
I would really like to know what we can bring to drink I don't drink beer etc and everything else comes in plastic or cans so no your absolutely right no point in bring the ice chest one of those big jugs they show would take up so much room and them PLASTIC food containers do too and still plastic so what's the point... I just wanted a lil drinkin water for me may as well just get one of them water dispensing back packs we use for camping and hiking 🤦♀️
Maybe instead of wrist bans a hand stamp (different color for different days) should be used, well why not! Paper wrist bans are not reusable and this is what this law is about to rid the river of litter, I agree with the laws BTW, before the laws the bottom was trashed.

I oppose the can ban even though I understand the rationale. Everyone is being punished for the actions of a few. I also was under the impression that all the outfitters also opposed the can ban so I was surprised that during the video it was said Texas Tubes supported it. Texas Tubes is a great tubing business that I always use in NB. Keep up the good work.
Travis ok thanks for your comment! At first we were opposed to the Can Ban, however after we fully understood the intentions of the Can Ban, we became supporters. Basically it is the same as "Don't Mess With Texas", only it's New Braunfels way of saying "Don't Mess With Our Rivers", which means don't litter. To Litter or not to Litter is a personal choice and decision... and if you Love Texas and Texas Rivers, you will have pride for our great State and automatically NOT Litter. Unfortunately, there are huge numbers of people (not a few) who don't take pride in Texas or it's rivers, (just look on the side of any road in Texas and you will see Litter) so the State of Texas now has a fine for up to $2000 for Littering and New Braunfels has a fine for up to $500 for bringing Disposable, one time use throw-away containers and items on it's rivers within the City Limits of New Braunfels. The Can Ban has reduced the amount of Trash in the Comal and Guadalupe Rivers by 95% within the City Limits of New Braunfels. 99.99% percent of people know they're NOT suppose to Litter. :) We are just trying to spread the word because we love Texas and our Rivers and it's better to know before you go! Can you take a floating “kayak cooler” as long as it’s under 30 quarts? Any response is appreciated.b
Thomas Tehan - Yes, your "kayak cooler" qualifies as long as it holds 30 quarts or less, has a locking mechanism on the lid to secure your cooler lid to prevent spillage in case you flip over, and your cooler is NOT made of "Styrofoam". Hope that helps, thanks for your inquiry! Texas Tubes

I’m confused… I was just there and we were not allowed to introduce cans but were told we could take glass bottles during our float!!! Which is it???
Adriana Lopez - Glass and Styrofoam have been banned on all Texas rivers and lakes for years, in regards to the Comal River, "Disposable Containers" are banned, which means you can only take your food and beverages in "non-disposable containers", which are containers you would never throw away into the river, like Yeti Cup, Canteen, an Igloo drinking jug, Tupperware for your food... once these containers are empty, you'll take them home with you, while "Disposable Containers", like beer and soda cans, plastic water bottles, chip bags, snack packaging people throw into the river and don't want to bring their trash home or to a trash can, so the City of New Braunfels banned ALL Disposable Containers to keep the river clean! @@MrRolandarriaga - Beer and carbonated beverages are the most difficult drinks to bring on the river because they need to stay carbonated to stay fresh and taste delicious, no one likes flat beer or soda. Unfortunately, we only know of 2 ways to bring beer and keep it fresh, carbonated, and cold and they are: 1) For a group of "Beer Drinkers", renting a 1/6th Keg from a Liquor Store and then packing it with ice around its base is a great way to keep your beer cold and fresh as you enjoy your float down the beautiful Comal River! Rental Kegs are allowed on the Comal River since it is a "non-disposable" container and it's returnable, so no one would throw an empty keg with a deposit on it in the river once it’s empty! A 1/6th Keg contains 5.2 gallons of beer, which is the same as 41-pints or 55-12oz bottles of beer! 2) The other option works pretty well for one person, but it's on the expensive side, and that would be a "Beer Growler", which is available online, like Amazon (a.co/d/2Sij9lr), currently selling for $57.00 and holds 64oz of Beer, which is a half-gallon and will keep your Beer cold and carbonated. Most people are bringing mixed drinks or wine in the 64oz. flip-top Igloo drinking jugs (about $10 at Academy Sporting Goods), and don't have to worry about a pressurized container to maintain carbonation, simple, easy, and quick, however, Beer lovers don't care for mixed drinks or wine! So how do you refill your drink?
boxerbody27 - there are a few ways to keep your drinks refilled during your float trip on the Comal River: 1) Buy one of the 64oz (1/2 Gallon) Flip-top Drinking Jugs... that should last you for the entire float trip, but if that doesn't work for you... 2) bring a 30 Quart Cooler full of your favorite beverages and refill from your cooler as you float! Bonus option: 3) Bring a Hydration Backpack full of your favorite beverage (Beer does not stay fresh and carbonated in a Hydration Backpack, but Wine, Mixed drinks, Juice, and water work quite nicely!) @@boxerbody27 - sorry I wasn't more specific... at no time can you take any "disposable container(s) or item(s)" on the river with you, everything you take on the Comal River must be reusable, meaning you would never throw it away. The purpose of the Can Ban is to make sure no one throws any type of debris into the river, so everything in your cooler must be in reusable, and non-disposable containers... then you can refill your drinks from the reusable containers in your cooler. All throwaway items are banned from being taken on the river, that way, the river will stay clean! Hope that clears things up and we'll be looking forward to seeing you in a couple of months! Thanks! I'm in 50s now, property owner, neighbors hate me as they came later. I BNB house now due to Butt-Head neighbors. First they started the no trespassing laws, made it a class B and you went to jail, then we had a can round up which the money went to city for all kinds of things, then they made more problems with this and that. I believe in having a good time but no water, flat beer, less river ride coverage. I can tell 4 decades of how it went from fun to liberal!!😡. I now just go to other states and actually have more fun. The can roundup made a lot of cash!!! 🤔. Though I guess they don't care about that money as tourists pay more and more for less. That's why all my rentals are for college kids not brought up right 🤣🤣😂. (Drives liberal neighbors in sane!) I'm the old man who loves to piss off the neighbors that I sold land to because they got here and immediately complained!!!
I ALWAYS ARGUED THAT THE OLDER PLACES GIVE OUT THE MESH SACKS TO EMPTY OUT AT COLLECTION STATIONS AND YOU SEE THE SHERIFFS ALWAYS KAYAKING, LET THEM WRITE TICKETS, COMMUNITY MONEY, THEN THE TRESPASSING, WELL POLICE WERE SET UP ON MY PROPERTY ARRESTING PEOPLE FOR TRESPASSING 🤔🤔 I ALLOWED EVERYONE TO PULL UP AND TAKE SWIM!!! I CALLED DPS TO COME ON OVER AND ARREST THE POLICE. THEY WERE SHOCKED WHEN I CALLED TX RANGERS! THEY WERE NOW TRESPASSING AFTER BEING ASKED TO LEAVE. 😁 I WON THAT DEAL!!!! TRASH TRAILERS WERE ON A LOT OF OUR LANDS AND WE DONATED TO THE COUNTY PARKS AND RECREATION. I MADE 6K IN CAN RECYCLING THAT WAS PUT IN MYYY POCKET. Someone else said that too and that they said glass bottles they could take in the river but not cans and their response is its banned and has been for years ....sooooo that didn't answer why she was told that and allowed to take i t on the river recently! I have 2 questions? 1) can kids play water guns going down river anymore? 2) if we can put water bottles in our cooler to stay cool, then when we are done with the water bottle, can we put them in a potatoe sack connected to our tube? What we use to do all the time! Never had a problem? 3) sorry,one more hopefully---how much to float with our own tubes?
@sundaystowell6959 - 1) Squirt guns and water canons are still allowed on the river for kids and adults. 2) All disposable containers are banned on the Comal River... and plastic throwaway water bottles are considered disposable, thus are banned on the Comal River, so you'll need to bring your drinking water in a "non-disposable container", such as a Yeti or other brand Tumbler, a canteen, reusable sports bottle, drinking jug, hydration backpack, etc... potato sacks are no longer used for trash on the Comal River as no one is allowed to bring trash (disposable containers) on the river. 3) Personal tubes are the same price as our rental tubes, which includes your return shuttle at the end of your float trip. Are mini kegs allowed?
David Vazquez - the only kegs that are allowed are kegs that require a deposit, which means you will return the empty to get your deposit back. Mini kegs do not require a deposit and are one-time use, then throw away kegs, so they are NOT allowed on the Comal River. We would love to see a Beer Company make a returnable mini-keg, but we have not found one yet! Most people who bring a keg, bring the 1/6th size keg or individuals bring their own Beer Growler, which holds 64oz of Beer and keeps it cold, fresh, and carbonated. Hope that helps! Thanks!

@Rkeequintero - Unfortunately, beer is the most difficult beverage to bring on the river because it needs to stay carbonated to taste good. To keep beer carbonated, it must be kept in a pressurized container and normal beverage containers do not offer any type of pressurization option. We know of 2 ways to bring beer and neither is cheap... for an individual, a 64oz Beer Growler works pretty good, and is available on Amazon at (www.amazon.com/Stanle.../dp/B07P8WX8J2/ref=sr_1_3?fbclid=IwAR2wk5RkrJPTOyPw4lkA5iSolfGDcr2WX-XkTSeko6fq7EwN7WuE7-MWFEU), as of today, the price is $57, however, we've seen them as low as $38... not sure if it will ever go that low again due to the high inflation. The 2nd method is for a group of 8 enthusiastic beer drinkers... you rent a 1/6th keg of beer from the local liquor store, put a deposit down, bring it to the river, put it in a tube with a bottom, pack ice around the bottom of the keg, wrap it with something to help block the sun, and bring your insulated tumblers and fill them up and off you go for 3 1/2 hours! The 5-liter mini-kegs are NOT allowed on the Comal River because they are disposable containers, you throw them away when empty, whereas with the 1/6th keg, you have to put a return deposit on it and you have to return it to get your deposit back, chances are you are NOT going to throw it in the river when it's empty! @lilbitpcfla1637 - It's completely legal to bring and consume alcohol on the Comal River in "non-disposable" containers like a 64oz drinking jug, drink tumbler, sports bottle, etc... wine and mixed drinks are the most popular! We always encourage everyone to drink responsibly and have a designated driver when leaving the river after consuming alcohol. Hope that helps! Thanks!
I'm going to feel bad if I pre-fill a bunch of stainless steel thermoses with beer and don't finish them all. But I'll feel alot worse if I run out of beer halfway down the river.
Meh. I understand why they banned cans. I don't support it, as the act of merely holding a can isn't littering and its punishing someone for what they MIGHT do. But I understand why.

@joey8567 - thanks for your comment, there are a lot of people who don't like the can ban and we understand that... it does take a little more effort to bring food and beverages on the rivers in New Braunfels, however, the Can Ban has been the only effective way the City has found so far to keep the rivers clean in New Braunfels, no one enjoys floating and swimming on a trashed strewn river! Please explain how the Can Ban brings money... it actually saves money by not needing to spend huge amounts of money to clean up the river year after year, if you're not littering or bringing disposable items on the river, you're not going to get fined. The Can Ban is no different than "Don't Mess With Texas", if you litter, you get fined, plain and simple. If people didn't litter on the rivers, there would be no need for a can ban or fines for littering in Texas. Texas Tubes
Cans are TOTALLY RECYCLABLE as are plastic bottles and containers. Also, it keeps the divers in business. Certainly ban glass but aluminum cans and plastic? NO!!!
I'm local and grey headed, I agree. They did it back in the day and money helped improvements unless assholes took and pocketed 😢
