Fixing and modifying electric pole rack on truck.

  • In this video I modify and refit an electric pole rack onto a wagon.
The rack had had a bit of an accident with a tree branch due to it being quite a lump higher than the cab. The customer wanted to be able to fold down the rack when not in use to avoid having the same issue again.
I designed how I was going to make the hinges and locking system in Onshape before hand. Without the wagon in the yard, I wasn’t sure how much clearance I had for the locking bolts, so I only cut 2 parts out to start with. While I was waiting I cut 4x 98mm lengths of 25mm round bar, put them in the lathe and bored them out to take a 20mm pin. By the time I had done this, the wagon had arrived and I could get on cnc plasma cutting the other hinge parts out.
To ensure the hinges were inline I only cut through one side of the box section until I had the hinges tacked on, I could then finish cutting through the box section.
Next, I cut out and pressed some plates for the locking bolts to clamp onto, these were made from 8mm plate. The locking bolts were made from 30mm round bar. These were drilled through on the milling machine so an M20 bolt could be welded into them. Before I could install these, I needed to fully weld the hinges on.
When welding the bolts into the round bar I made sure the nyloc nuts would be still on the nylon part when undo so the nuts won’t vibrate loose when the rack is down.
I also capped off all the open box sections so they wont fill with water.
The rack was then to install back onto the wagon.
To replace the strength lost I cut out and pressed some plates from 5mm to cover over where the join was and also added in a 45degree box section gusset underneath. All finished off in the trusty red oxide.
Being dyslexic, writing these video descriptions is the hardest part of the whole job. Spell check keeps me right!
Hope you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching!

I agree. Some of the so called "music"(which is noise to me) on other channels having to do with machining/fabrication I leave immediately and not watch the rest of the content. I like "Oliver"(I think this is his name?) because he is humble. His workmanship says it all. Hello from the State of Texas!

I was self employed as a handyman for several decades, and while every day wasn’t "interesting" to someone outside of my sphere, each day I got to share my talents in many fields with my customers to solve their problems…big and small! You did a great job on that pole rack. It's a shame that the coachbuilder made it late on Friday afternoon using thin gauge box section. Those racks take a hammering from thick heavy timber poles and the odd smack from a tree or hiab operator

To answer your rhetorical question, I believe people watch your channel because you're a genuine guy, doing real work, on real equipment, so it can be used by real working people. And you do it while keeping a "laid back" attitude. People can see you're a regular guy doing brilliant engineering and machining with no bullshit. Keep it going, Oliver. Looking forward to your next job. Cheers, mate.

You sir are amazing. Your careful, calculating, and you make things better and safer for the people you work for. You are an excellent fabricator and have more "sense" than most engineers your age. The fact that you take the care to make sure things are straight and square and you check items that I wouldn't even think to check makes me feel like I am getting an education when watching. You can fabricate anything you put your mind to. Your using your God given talents and skills. Anything you touch that comes in the door goes out the door far better. All that keeps me sitting here for 30 minutes or so at a time and waiting for your next video to come out. Like the man said, There's no BS, no glitz, just brutally good fabrication and engineering going on here. Don't ever doubt yourself. This madman fabricator models it up in a computer in 3D to make sure it will work, then he builds his own dang hinges. Madness. Amazing. You are very good at what you do.

I'm 70 yrs old slightly dyslexic but highly practical, been told its a trade of with being dyslexic. Just one thing I noticed if you had made the locking pin on top so they swing down, they should swing into locking podition when you lift it up, if they did come lose they'll still be in locking position, pluss you could use a socket and extension to lock them from underneath with out climbing on top especially if its wet. Hope you don't mind me mentioning it, if you do just tell me to piss off. That's what my gaffer use to say.

As has been said, you are good at your job, no fake drama, no loud music, no joking about, you just get on with the job and talk through what you are doing. Also you are in the UK, so local!

We watch because you get the "best" jobs. You can think, you can work around problems and as others have said you are humble and don't waste your breath about things we as viewers can see and work out for ourselves. You are a good operator, especially for one so young. Keep doing what you are doing, especially the variety, the jobs that many others would walk (run) away from. 72 yr old retired mechanic/machinist/fabricator in Land Down Under. PS. You have many more skills in certain areas than I have.

Always goes like this when you modify something that is not as well made as it should have been! Good job on the hinge design!

I bet jobs like this make you just want to scrap the whole goddam thing and start from scratch. There are so many things done wrong that it makes continuing so difficult. It’s great seeing you work around all this shabby work. Your projects are always top notch and you don’t cut any corners. That’s the way all work should be done, unfortunately the world doesn’t live by your rules. Amazing work as always, Olly, stay safe.

I enjoy watching your videos because you are a down to earth person your video are not made just to sell or advertise something to me like a lot of other people I used to like watching and you work properly you don't get dress head to foot in saft stuff just to do a tack your just a working man showing us what you are doing thank you for that

I'm glad I found your channel. You definitely have a wide variety of interesting jobs come in for repair and modification. The way you modify original designs to add strength is great, giving the customer the job back better than when it was new, fixing factory design blunders.

What you do is real. It's not made up. It's not staged. Its authentic and honest. The skills you have, crafting from your head and your heart without the perfect tool is how the supermajority of us have to do things. As Andre said below. No bullshit. You can stop worrying about why people watch and just enjoy the flow. Love to see you think but don't be afraid to put your normal, honest, hard work on this channel. Love from Washington State USA...🙂

What I like about Oliver is he is honest and earnest. He has what I call a feeling for the material. I think my favorite parts of his video's is seeing how heavy parts are flipped and moved. The only way that happens is with a deep understanding of a sense of the center of gravity. I think Oliver's parents need to be recognized because someone let him run free in the shop at an early age.

I received one your zipper hoodie a couple of weeks ago and its awesome, but I was telling my wife the zipper is on the wrong side. I feel your pain having to fight the zipper war. Love you videos I wouldn't change anything.

There is no crap to weed thru. No sponsors to skip thru. It's just you doing pretty cool work to repair and most of the time upgrade, strengthen and enhance to item you are working on at the time. I like that most of your videos are on one thing not multiple videos on one piece. Your knowledge is your best quality. Keep it up.

Another great video Ollie, 68000 people can’t be wrong , keep going the way you are , some of these channels get a bit too up themselves and lose something, your channel is honest and down to earth. Nice one 👍.

Yeah...the end up shilling for stuff...then slap in a bunch of craptastic music over the high speed shots...wouldn't be so bad, but they usually BLAST it so loud it makes it annoying....

Reading the comments below shows that people appreciate not only your skills, Oliver, and the no-nonsense approach to the videos you produce, but also your dedication to the job, your willingness to find the best solution to a problem, and the way you explain your thinking regarding how you are going about the repair and why, plus the effort you make to do the best job possible for the customer, all this comes together in some cracking good videos. I would imagine that a good number of your viewers know nothing about welding/fabricating or engineering, and like me, would not know where to start on these jobs that you make look so easy.

You are showing us real life, no youtube production, by watching fabricators like you we can in a way gain experience without being on the job, if that makes sense, don’t need to go back to many years and we didn’t have this great information at our fingertips, Thank You for making the videos

Hi Oliver😊, another great mod to was was a poorly made frame in the first place. Those hinges were ace, and will outlive the rest of it. This video is a good example of why we keep watching, just down to earth craftsmanship every step of the way, and the calm way you give us a blow by blow account of the process, and the way you work things out makes such good viewing, and that's why I can't wait for the next video mate.best wishe's to you and your's, from another Yorkshireman. I find what you do interesting because you are not making a new piece for your lathe each week. the things that you do are to earn an income, being in the farming community there is always something different.
    Thanks Oliver
