Interesting thing about Margaret Clitherow’s death was that the accused had to enter a plea when brought before the court to be tried. However, those who were rich enough to own property knew that if they were caught red handed and would undoubtedly be found guilty by the jury, their estate would be forfeit by the Crown, thus depriving their descendants of their inheritance. Those who could weather the ordeal of this barbaric punishment without succumbing to the excruciating pain, ultimately sacrificed their lives so that their children would not be left homeless. Wikipedia contributors mention that she did it so that her children would not be subjected to torture. This is also plausible. However, David Starkey is an expert on Tudor history and covered this ordeal in great detail, so I recommend watching his video if you enjoy learning about this era.

Some techniques were handed down over the centuries. Some were suggested by some popes. Some were local inventions like Zwingli(reformer leader) drowning Anabaptists because they didn't believe in infant baptism. Sometimes he had them tossed into the river. Other times the "heretic" would be tied to a long pole then dipped repeatedly into the river like a see-saw.

According to Lady Antonia Fraser,Mary Queen Of Scots was hit by the ax but didn't die right away. The executioner had to take a second swing which hit her vertically partly on the top back of her head.He then had to saw through her to get the ax out.But it left a big vein or piece of sinew.
The third swing was to chop through the sinew to separate her head from her body.
The last insult to injury was he was supposed to pick up her head and show it to the onlookers so they would know she was dead. But wearing a wig her head dropped on the ground.
I'm surprised women did not faint.

The prisoner was placed into a tight enclosure below the level of the floor, and a huge stone block was placed over him. The enclosure has an open drain to the Thames. As the level of the Thames rose with the tide, rats would climb up the drain - and feast upon the unfortunate prisoner.

100% agree. I believe you should die the way you killed, that is if the killing is unjust. Say you shoot someone dead because they SA'd your kid or spouse, I think that should go unpunished. If you kill for money, a simple dispute, or something along those lines, you should be killed. I believe home intruders should be killed too. That's a line you don't cross, making innocents question the very safety of their home.

Surprised I didn't see breaking on the wheel mentioned here. In this method the condemned had all four limbs smashed, either tied to a wheel or had their limbs smashed by a wheel, and then their mangled limbs were wrapped around the spokes of a wheel and they were left to die on the wheel. One notable execution involving the wheel was Peter Staub (if I got his name right) who was accused of being a werewolf for the murders he apparently committed. They didn't just break him on a wheel, but also pulled out parts of his body with hot pinchers along with beheading him and then burning him at the stake along with the rest of his family.

Peter Stumpp. Wiki info here: Execution
The execution of Stumpp, on 31 October 1589, alongside his daughter Sybil and mistress, Katherine, is one of the most brutal on record: he was put to a wheel, where "flesh was torn from his body", in ten places, with red-hot pincers, followed by his arms and legs. Then his limbs were broken with the blunt side of an axehead to prevent him from returning from the grave, before he was beheaded and his body burned on a pyre. His daughter and mistress had already been flayed and strangled, and were burned along with Stumpp's body. As a warning against similar behavior, local authorities erected a pole with the torture wheel and the figure of a wolf on it, and at the very top they placed Peter Stumpp's severed head.

Some inaccuracies - you refer to the Medieval period, but many of these types of capital punishment, including the brutal execution method for traitors (to be hanged, drawn and quartered) were well into the Middle Ages and even later. Also, you mention rather than being hanged, drawn and quartered, women were simply hanged? This is also a little inaccurate - being h,d&q was the sentence for high treason - women found guilty of the same offence were generally burnt at the stake, not hanged.

Got to laugh a bit.. 60 in a row beheaded by axe in Viking tomesnoting new there really One of them asked the axeman to hold his beard out of the way of the axe... Waited and at the last moment, pulled his head back out of the way, and the axeman chopped his hands off,,, he got it right second time around though. wonder if you got got the killing of King Edmond if they used for target practice in archery... fella looked la porcupine after that one (The Malmsmary wine one is in the book King Henry the 8th and all that stuff... great to help you learn if your going to take the history exams for A level or higher ed) Not so sure about the the Impaler history you got wrong though... The Romanians were being invaded by the Mores, and many died in battle.. They asked for help from the rest of the Christian countries around the borders and were ignored, So the bodies were put on the spikes for the Mores to see and the closer they got to the city, the more bodies they would see impaled on the spike and the ones closest to the city were Mores.. so many should have seen their friends impaled there.. scare tactics work well eh? .. That information I got from a movie I saw on youtube a few years ago made by the Romanians themselves... They also said that Vlad himself was Swedish royal descent, so part of my family

If I am not mistaken, there was one awful means of execution, and that was stoning. Stoning refers to the practice of throwing heavy stones at an offender, and as the stones struck him, they would break his bones until he died from trauma and even loss of blood. I may be mistaken, but that is what it seemed to me.
